I personally have no prejudice against simple solutions if they sound good. On some tracks I carve out my own EQ and tinker with the compression, etc. On some tracks, I use EZMix presets. For example, there are some bass, vocal, and master bus presets that have become part of my standard sound. Also, Sonar's built-in preset Hi-Hat Helper FX chain is not bad if your hi-hat is too mushy.
I was toying with buying one of the One Knob things and giving it a try, but I am not sure it fills a gap right now for me. I bought EZ Mix specifically because I needed some quick and easy master bus presets to knock out demos. Along the way, I discovered it had a few other things I liked. The people who design these presets do audio engineering or sound design all day long and mostly know what they're doing.
I am a songwriter who also engineers some, so that is where I am coming from.
