2 Blue Screens in a Row!

Hi

Almost everything has been fine with X2a since I installed it (other than learning how to use it!) but suddenly tonight it changed.

Last night I had one strange small problem. I opened up an older project (from about 2 weeks ago, done with the same version of Sonar) and tried to use the soft synth VB3. When I first started playing around with it there were no problems at all, but as soon as I hit Play or Record each note I played was suddenly delayed by about half a second. I had to restart the program to fix it. I haven't had this problem with any other soft synths.

Then as a test I started a new project and inserted only that VSTi and it worked fine.

I only mention that because I haven't had any other problems until that one last night.

But tonight it blue screened. (This happened in a different project than the ones mentioned above) It was right after I recorded an audio clip. I restarted, cleared out the Temp directories and tried again. 2 minutes later it blue screened again. I had just recorded another audio clip and clicked the red button to disarm the track. The screen went really weird and it blue screened again. So now I'm a bit worried!

There have only been 2 changes to the computer this week. I entered the registration code for VB3 last night. And today I entered a code for a program called OB6000, an Oberheim Matrix 1000 editor.

I did open the OB6000 program and test it out just a few minutes before the first crash. Everything worked fine so I closed it and went back to recording. At first I thought that might be part of the cause but the second time I did not open it, yet after a couple of minutes recording in Sonar there was another blue screen.

The message on the blue screen both times was "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

No other problems with this computer (I've had it a little over a month now).

Computer is:

Intel i7-3770 3.4ghz
16gb RAM
Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit, all updates. no updates installed today but there might have been some on the weekend.
Wireless logitech mouse (M310)
C: is 128GB SSD
Audio and cakewalk projects (and picture cache) drive is a 256GB SSD

Sound card is Emu 1212m.
Midi is m-audio midisport 8x8 and master keyboard is m-audio Keystation Pro 88

The project has 4 midi tracks (mostly just for controlling external synths, almost no recorded midi data, and all muted) and 42 audio tracks. Lots of Breverb and compressors, transient shapers, tempo delays and several envelopes. I was only recording a single stereo track and only a short clip (10 seconds) in both cases.

If there is some place I should be submitting this as a bug report, let me know, but hopefully there is a simple solution. I will update if it happens again.

EDIT: I just did several more takes (about 12-15 I think) with no problems. The only difference is that I used a new audio track. The other recordings were done on existing audio tracks that have envelopes. Come to think of it, in this song I have rerecorded a bunch of things but I always record on a new empty track then delete the old clips from the original track and drag the new ones onto that track when I'm finished. I think this was the first time I decided to add more to an existing track. The fact taht the have envelopes may have nothing to do with it but maybe I'll test that later.

If you google that error, you will see a lot of entries that mostly point to hardware failures. You might want to check your windows event logs.

How many hard drives in that computer? Too many hard drives can overtax the power supply and cause strange errors.

The reason could be EMU. Sometimes I still get blue screens with this card on Win 7 64-bit and  Win 8 64-bit. When I disable the card in the hardware device Manager and use the Impact Twin, all bluescreens are gone.
I´m just additionally setting up a 32-bit system and will test the card in this environment. For me, stable recording with EMU products in 64-bit Windows is not possible. Sad but true.

I'd start by removing the covers of your computer, remove all traces of dust & make sure everything is seated properly - Graphics card, RAM sticks etc.

Make sure all your fans are working and again, free of dust.

Use BETA driver found on EMU website. BETA driver, WDM driver are not included in the BETA driver that cause this BLUE-SCREEN-DEATH.  The included WDM makes it halt and crash when you use the ASIO driver on some specific computers. This will take care of the main BLUE-SCREEN-CRASH .

Note: The BETA driver seem to be called x.xxx exactly the same driver but aren't the same driver.

To get even better performance don't let it share the same IRQ even if you can do that with PCI-Xpress cards. Check the motherboard IRQ table-pdf.

    "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".
I agree that this can be caused by drivers. In my case my MIDI interface driver was causing blue screens - until I reinstalled the drivers.

For what it's worth - VB3 has always worked great here (even though I'm running 64 bit). I'd be reluctant to blame VB3.

This error  "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". May be solved by changing the USB or firewire slots, so that the sound card or MIDI controller is in a different usb or firewire hub. Im saying this because it list the IRQ in the error message. so maybe changing the IRQ of your devises may help. Maybe an IRQ is gettign overloaded as there may be too many things in one of them.

Blue screens are always caused by hardware or driver errors.

I had a 1616m for a while. I used to get BSODs until I bought a better AI. I had to send my current AI to get repaired and went back to the 1616m and started getting BSODs again. Now that I'm back on my current AI, no more BSODs.

Hi John and welcome to the forum!   There are lots of people here willing to help, but it is impossible to know where to start with the information you have provided.  This is also quite an old thread. You will get much more attention if you start a new thread,  include a description of the problem you are having (frequency of blue screens, any contributing factors etc) and details about your system (OS, Specs,  Sound card,  etc)
