Disc Load
I opened up a new project that has 59 audio tracks to start mixing it. I was listening to it to see what was what and I noticed my disc icon was blinking red from time to time. The CPU meters were barely bouncing. Theres no plugins inserted, just the raw tracks. I hardly ever have any problems with X-2a. Most projects have 20 to 30 tracks and by the time im through mixing theres a bunch of busses and a boat load of plugs and it never misses a beat. Anyone have any ideas why my disc load is maxing out by just playing this project?

It may be that you are seeing the upper limit of what your system can do. If I am reading this correctly, the project has almost twice the number of audio tracks than your usual project. Busses and FX plugins don't factor into disk I/O. Your sample rate and bit depth do. You might try defragging the disk.

Look for a setting: "Playback I/O Buffer" or something like that and change the value. Try both halving it and doubling it to see if any change.

I defragged last night but it was kinda late so I didn't get to check it out. But I defrag very often. I've got sonar on a 1tb drive and my projects on a 2tb drive and theres not much else on the drives. What else can I do? Ive read where people having a lot more tracks than I do without trouble and chances are I probably wont have another project with 59 audio tracks but If I do I want to be able to handle it. So, what can I do to make my system handle about any track count?

I think this fixed the problem. I changed the Playback and Record I/O Buffers from 64 to 128 and that seemed to have work. Thank You!!! Chris

I wouldn't be afraid to bump it to 512 or 1024. Not sure why the default is set so low. Many end up setting it to 256 - I believe its a good number for most situations
