I was brought up around alot of his music. Such a unique voice. A damn good run by a guy who probably should have been dead 40 years ago. Randy p.s. I covered one of his tunes a few years ago. I think Larry and James were on it with me. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=5826797

Randy, I have covered that song in more than a few bands.... nice version.

I heard someone.... don't recall who it was, in one of the country shows when George was winning one of the awards, make the comment that every male vocalist in country music wishes they could sing like George.

Yeah... based on his life.... I figured a jealous husband or the whiskey would have got him long before this.... he made a pretty amazing comeback from his wild days..... there was a time when almost no one would book him because they never knew if.... one, he would show up....and two, if he would be sober enough to do the show.

    He will be missed.

I find it interesting that someone of George's stature passes and it sparks so little forum reaction.  If Hank Williams was "the songwriter"...and he was, then George was "the voice".  We will not see his like again. Ever. A living legend...a giant...an inspiration to countless singers.  The real deal.  I truly feel sorry for those who don't understand the enormity of this loss.

Indeed.... in the world of rock, this would be like Paul McCartney passing.

George is one of the "founding fathers" if you will, of country music... moving it from the troubadours of the early days into the modern era of what is now referred to as "Real Country Music" by many folks.

George is one of the pillars of country music, and one of the more instantly recognizable male voices of all time. His vocal abilities were amazing. His vocal craftsmanship on a song was something to marvel. More than one time I have gotten a chill down my spine as I listened to him sing.   And his character and demeanor on stage and with his fans was one of a truly great and humble man.  He appreciated what God had given him... the gift of a voice that could touch people's hearts and souls with a simple melody.

George certainly had his demons that he battled and while they came close to destroying him, his career,  and his family.  He fought back and overcame the issues of his past and enjoyed a comeback as a sober man, again recording more music, touching more lives, and performing on the concert stages of the world.

Certainly someone to admire, even if one is not into "die hard" country music. Much can be learned from a study of his life and his music.
