My new tune-O-matic comes today?
It was supposed to be here Friday. It didn't show up on Saturday. Fingers crossed.. I'm hoping to find it in the mailbox at lunch time. My new 575 came with a funky temporary bridge saddle. I think the former owner swiped his favorite off it and stuck a temporary block of wood on it. I can carve it up but I don't know where to place the saddles so I ordered a Gotoh Tune-O-Matic replacement to use while I sort out the positions etc. There's always something to do. :-) This guitar resonates better than the other one I have. I think I'm gong to set it up as a "strummer" box because it's lively. I can't wait to get it intonated properly so I get a real feel for what it can do. best regards, mike

String alignment to pup mags sure looks off.

Thanks. :-) I didn't take that photo. :-) The bridge floats on the top so it can be positioned better. I'm going to try to put the slots in the new bridge in the right place. :-) Honestly, I think maybe your practiced eye may have caught the fact that the previous owner had raised the pickup in its mount so that it slants dramatically upwards towards the high E string. It sounds like it too. It's too pronounced and unbalanced compared to the neck pickup. I'll fix that with the set up. I thought about a Callaham bridge, but I think I'd like to carve up a nice simple one after I use the tune o matic and my choice of strings to get it right. all the best, mike

Excuse me if you already know Mike- Set the neck pup first then level out the bridge pup to it.

Thank you! When I received the guitar I was disappointed I got snaked with the bridge, but then I realized I was going to have fun working on it. :-)

I'd want to get this one to try out. I like the idea not so much the base of it but the top piece. It would be nice to be able to replace the bone...maybe? Hard to beat bone.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. That one is on the possibilities list, and it seems like a good candidate for a "strummer" too. The only thing... I dislike the smell of bone powder... it kinda creeps me out. :-)

LOL. Maybe something to do with a past life?...'cause it sure doesn't matter when striving for good sounds!

Well, I got the bridge and it turns out that my old eyes and the crude measuring device I had used missed the post spacing dimension by a country millimeter. So, it didn't fit on the "foot" that came with the guitar and that I was planning to re use. I grabbed a cheap file and carved the rosewood block into a crude facsimile of a bridge saddle. After I oiled it up and burnished it a bit it started looking pretty good and it sounds real good. I put a set of Rickenbacker 10-42 half rounds on it and it's a zinger. I didn't realize how dead the old strings that came on it were and now I realize that the carved maple top is just bubbling with life. I played it acoustic through the evening just for the pleasure of hearing the strings squeak a bit and I worked the fret board over good. I fell in love... again. :-) best regards, mike

FWIW, here's what I did: After: Before: I just worked by eye with a triangle file so it has that imprecise "hand fashioned" look, but it seems to work real well. I decided on a string set and used another guitar's setup with the same strings as reference for the relative placement of each saddle. I didn't get the intonation as good as it can be... so I'll try again in a week or two. :-) best regards, mike
