The iLok really isn't a headache for me at all. I've never paid for the zero down time thing. The iLok website is pretty intuitive when you get logged in, all your licenses should be there. The Waves demo was just a temporary license for me. No need for a 2nd iLok just update your licenses at the iLok account. Some plugs require an iLok 2 for some reason. I have some Slate Digital stuff and I've never had a problem.

    Mike,

When you get a demo license it remains on the iLok...even after the demo has expired.
You can't delete it.  The reason is that, if you could, you could just get another demo
license and continue using the product for free.

I've been using an iLok since PT 8.  When I ditched and sold with PT9, I sold it with
the iLok.  I then purchased an iLok 2.

Main differences between iLok 1 and iLok 2 are the design and the capacity.
iLok 2 holds 5 times the licenses that iLok 1 would hold.

Be advised that, in order to download your licenses to the iLok
it's best to use IE 32 bit, which can be found in the c:\programs(x86) folder.

the Pace web site doesn't recognize 64 bit browsers, and has a hard time with
    3rd party 32 bit browsers.

I also have the Steinberg eLicenser for Cubase.  I really don't mind the Dongle Model,
as I understand there are a LOT of people STEALING the software.

    Cheers!

So far, I haven't had any issues except when I moved my iLok1 licenses to my iLok2. Might have been user error, but I got the licenses working in about 10 minutes. I keep the iLok2 in a USB port on the back of the machine and never even think about it anymore.

Mike, if you're superstitious chances are you will loathe iLok so consider yourself warned. I've only heard a few horror stories (search the forum or ask ol pal,  he had a broken one & issues with replacement)

Usually demos are replaced automatically when purchasing a license, you'll get a warning message.
Newer versions of FireFox don't work with their site so this is only time I use IE.
I've had iLok1 since 2000 & now v2. You can use both versions but more are going towards iLok 2, with 500 slots on iLok2 I find it's not necessary. They get removed from my PC twice a year, never had an issue with either.

Hope they'll be a thing of the past but there's a few great plugins that still needs them. Same goes for eLicenser.

Also I've asked a few devs or support to remove licences before, some did. Waves was one of them.

I don't like the idea of having to use a dongle...
But there's quite a few good Apps/Plugins that require it... and I want to be able to use those tools.
I've never had an issue with either my iLok or iLok2.
I've had a Syncrosoft key (prior to being purchase by Steinberg and renaming to eLicenser) die and I lost my Cubase SX2 license.
Was not pleased with how that went down... and didn't own a copy of Cubase for several years.

Now I've got an iLok2, eLicenser, and Waves license (flash-drive) all residing on a small 4-port USB "hub" cable.
So all are connected to the DAW via a single USB-2 port.  Works perfectly...
Almost akin to a ring of keys...
Makes it easy to move to my secondary machine.

I had the demo license for Phoenix Verb.
When I purchased Phoenix, it overwrote the demo license.
To avoid clutter on your main iLok, you can use a second iLok... and transfer all non-purchased demo licenses to that unit.

I currently have two iLok 1s...one iLok 2...and a generic USB stick for my WAVES stuff.  I've had one original iLok go bad and had to send it to iLok.  It took about 3 days for them to replace it.  I did not have ZDT.  Of course if you lose your iLok...you're at the mercy of all the vendors whose licenses were on it.  iLok will simply tell you to go piss up a rope.

That said the only real problems I've ever had using them is the fairly frequent (and scary) occurance of the iLok site "not seeing" my iLoks when I log in.  Usually it's just trying to log out and in a couple of times and everythings ok.  But it's still not confidence inspiring...that AND the fact that the iLok site can't deal very well with 64bit.  Slackers.

...the zero down time program got him back up and running in 15 minutes.

    15 = 0 ?

No wonder they have software issues.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I think it may be Phoenix day over here. :-)

It's not cheap... but it's the one "high-end" algorithmic reverb to own.
When listening to 100% wet processed drum kit, you won't hear any metallic ringing.
For me, that's what separates a great reverb from the rest.

I didn't/don't get the meaning of this.

Some newer software requires iLok2 (won't work with iLok)... and thus couldn't be transferred to an iLok (from an iLok2).
ie:  The new Slate stuff requires iLok2.

You can transfer licenses from iLok1 to 2 but not the other way around.
