Keystrokes for the Split function

I find that I use the split function quite often when editing my audio tracks. I remembered there was a keys shortcut customization panel and since splitting a track takes a right click, then move to the command and finally a confirmation OK, there must be a faster way to accomplish this. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any mention of the split feature there. Did I miss it somehow?

Pressing Alt brings up the scissor tool, then left mouse button splits.

    1- select a clip
2- place the "now" timeline on the split point you'd like
3- press "S" (as in split!)

    Enjoy !

Thanks guys...one of those things I am only now starting to use more. vlab I was pretty sure I tried the press "S" and didn't see anything happen. Maybe it's just my fingers.

    I use 'S' too Starise.

Incidentally, you can also tell SONAR what to select by default after you split the clip. There are four available options in Preferences>Customisation>Editing:
    • Select Left Portion
    • Select Right Portion
    • Select Both Portions
    • Select None

You might want to check the help file regarding clip splitting, maybe you've overlooked something ..;)

    +1 for this ^^^^^

Also, shortcuts to open the 'Import' and (especially) the 'Export' dialogues would be cool.

I believe you can use the keyboard shortcuts in preferences to create your own key bindings for Import and Export

I believe you can use the keyboard shortcuts in preferences to create your own key bindings for Import and Export but not the Bounce function.

Thanks Steve, you are correct sir

I'd never even bothered looking seeing as it doesn't show a shortcut in the File menu for them.

I'm one happy camper now I've set up Ctrl+I for Import Audio, Ctrl+M for Import MIDI and Ctrl+E for Export Audio

Yeah, of course you are right. I failed to change the Area drop down to "Track View" in the Preference > Customization > Keyboard shortcuts dialog when scanning for the "Bounce to Clip(s)" function. Apologizes to all. I have cleaned up prior posts to avoid confusion.

    Nice one!

    That's Ctrl+B assigned for me.

This thread does raise one question though. I know they recently added a (much needed) 'search' function to the key-bindings dialogue, but I just wonder if they could go one step further and make it really user friendly? Maybe a pop-out screen that shows all the default bindings at once would help.

Has anyone ever put together a complete list of all the assigned shortcuts? (Or have I just inadvertently volunteered to do so )

I've been believing until today that "Global Bindings" shows ALL shortcut key assignable commands in Sonar... (no wonder why Bounce to Clip didn't appear there......I even thought the command was given a different name in the list and tried entering "merge" or something.) Wouldn't it be nice if there was "All Bindings" or "All Views" in the pull-down?

But why is the command not listed in the keyboard shortcuts list? This is another reason why I thought Bounce to Clip was not shortcut key assignable.

Anyway, Sonar has become an even greater daw for me today :)

Re:Keystrokes for the Split function 2013/05/01 08:23:29 (permalink)
There are a few design possibilities. Adding an "All" in the area drop down would be one option. Converting the dialog to use a tabbed notebook might make it more obvious. Having the search function scan all possible matches if the current drop down Area does not contain the search key and pop up a table of choices would be another possibility.

I imagine the command is not listed in the available keyboard shortcuts documentation because the function is not bound to a shortcut. As you can see be reviewing the Keyboard Shortcut dialog, there are quite a few functions that do not have active bindings. Listing them all in the table along with the current active bindings would make the list of active bindings difficult to read. Maybe adding a table of functions as an appendix to the documentation would be useful.

In any event, glad you got it working.

I've just found if you enter "lock clip" in the Search field when "Global Bindings" is selected from the pull-down, you only see "Lock Clip Position & Data."
But if you select "Track View" from the pull-down and do the same, you see "Lock Clip Position" and "Lock Clip Data" separately, too.
Hmm... misleading, isn't it? Or can clip position and data be locked in other views than TV?
