I wish...
I had a neighbor like Mr. Wizard. He may not be able to tell who makes the decals for Fender guitars but he may be able to show me how...but I'd like to know both. Maybe the Shell answer man...Help! I need somebody!...(sing along if ya want)

Decals? Build up some clear lacquer layers on waxed card stock and then use more lacquer to hand paint a design over the clear layer. Float it off the paper and into place. Let dry and cover with clear lacquer. Good luck. :-) best regards, mike

They did. That embossed foil look of Fenders didn't come from on-line instructions and finding out if they make them, how to or who makes them for them...probably impossible. Thanks though.

That was how we made custom decals for our models when I was a kid. The laquer paint we used was the stuff they used to called "dope". best regards, mike

I know....should I be surprised that there are people building guitars and putting decals on them that are of the same? No...and I'd carve my name in one of mine with a dull fork first...and may have to. I have found this and liking the idea of a press plate. I know of a builder that inlays a metal, stamped tag on the head that is very cool...and different?

So, kinda like being at a ho****e, eh? Hehe... Stupid forum software. I used to do a fun card trick with a friend of mine that would get the unsuspecting. I would have someone pull a card out of a deck, make a phone call to Mr. Wizard and, when I put them on the phone, Mr. Wizard would tell them what card they had pulled. Neat trick actually. How we would do it is like this: Whenever I called my friend on the phone I'd ask for Mr. Wizard and he would immediately start going through the suits (Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades...) and, when he said the correct suit, I would say "Yes, may I talk with him please?" then he would start going through all of the cards in a suit (A, 2, 3, etc.) until I heard the right one at which time I would say "Hi Mr. Wizard, I've got someone here who would like you to tell him what card he is holding." Then I would hand the phone to the guy holding the card and my friend would intone "You are holding the [insert the full answer here]." before hanging up. Hmm... We haven't done this trick in at least a dozen years, might be fun to remind him of it!

If you want to get the decals right you need a special printer. I know a guy with one and the big difference is that it has real metalic inks and proper clear film. When the decals are applied to lacquer they melt in. You can leave them on the surface but I tend to clear coat over top for that store-bought look.

I do apologize for my ignorance. Of course if I knew more about what Fender has had done...well I wouldn't be ignorant and ya'll would understand my question and quest. I've tried to show in these photos the difference of the "waterslide" and the one that I have no clues about. If one has Fenders with both they'll sure see the difference easily. This is the typical waterslide style that many copy with laser jet ( printing a reverse and painting the metallic fill or border) NOT something I'm interested in. This one however I am very interested in. Unlike waterslides there is absolutely no indication of it being a waterslide- if it is. It has the appearance of finely cut metal of individual pieces. Unfortunately after exhausting searches I've found no information and bombarded with information about waterslides. If this is a waterslide decal I sure want to know somebody that knows how to make them or where I can have custom ones made. My photo skills do not show it but this looks like chromed metal. .

Are you sure that it is metal? I wonder if sheet metal that thin can be laser cut that fine?

I'm not sure of much Mike...I'm sure it looks like chrome/metal. There is no markings in or around the letters. I'm thinking it may be silkscreened. I've started searching but haven't turned up anything. I use to have a Chevelle cap that was "liquid metal". The print on it looked like chrome. I found one...now if I can find out what was used.

Lady gets the prize!! I sure think this is what Fender may be using. Here is what I think looks just like it. At the bottom of page it states "Works great on pianos, guitars and cigar boxes" LOL so YES cigar box guitars too! Excuse me....just excited...thanks Jewels.

Well I finally got all the details. I sent them my name followed by "custom handmade" - about the same size as the Fender decal. I asked for chrome and gold pricing. One time tooling $185.00 In the size requested- a min. order of 44 at $7.96 ea. One sheet of material for each ( no mixing) so I'd have to get 44 of chrome and gold. I was willing to spring 535 for a quantity I didn't need if they would do 25% in gold but to have an additional 350 and 88 nameplates I'd never use- no way. Really like what they do and think it's the best way for me to go so it's a bummer. All I can do is tell him without the mix it can't happen. Back to the drawing board.

Update- I explained my disappointment - I understood the minimum quantity but did not understand the inventory count (sheets of material) being more important than customer satisfaction. So they counter-offered with a very reasonable discount for the run of gold but I would be left with the quantity issue of having 88 labels. Like I'm ever going to build 88 guitars! I decided I'd rather have only the silver...after all I don't have many options and don't like the ones I have. That point and that they tried to help...sold. Well after all of this I hope to post a pic when I get it on my Tele so ya'll can see.....and no, I didn't get "Spacey" :) .....man, I could have had a MIM Strat for what I just paid for labels. Oh...no worries...I talk to myself all the time :)

In my house, "Look at me when I'm talkin' to you!" was often followed with, "What 'r' you lookin' at?" or "Does something look funny to you?" That was frequently followed by, "I will knock that stupid grin off your face!" Yeah. I Am my own worst enemy.

'My dad yelled plenty of times, "look at me when I'm talking to you!".'
So I guess I wasn't the only one :-)
After convincing me that I was the most ridiculous thing that could have happened on planet earth, to the point I could no longer look at anyone, he'd force me to look him in the eyes like a proper 'man'.
Funny, I didn't do any such thing with my daughters and they look at me when they speak.
Anyone notice that Dad's really get a beating in Hollywood movies these days ?
They're either useless wimps and their woman has to do everything, or they prefer their son's friend over their own son.
