Newbie asks opinion

Ok, this is my rendition of The Cure's Primary of their album Faith. It is part of a set I'm working on to rework some cool 80's songs.
What do you think?

Not bad at all for what your trying to achieve, but I like the Cure's version a lot better, but not bad. Just seems like it's missing something, but can't put my finger on it. Nice mix and vocals though for what you did.

dear dick, this is a very interesting version of it. I must say that I am a huge fan of early the Cure, and especially of the faith album. THE soundtrack of my youth. So to me, these are holy tunes, untouchable in a way ;-) so you took one of the few uptempo songs of the faith record, and decided to play in half time...this gives you an originality point, but it does not do the song good. you are taking away the energy, and are adding just more aspects to it, like the guitar, the guitar solo, the more fiddlier drum playing, but it's like you are putting a lot of water into some fine beer. if you know what I mean ;-) that said, I like the idea and the concept, so keep the songs of the 80ties coming to the Sonar community, I am sure I will like some other songs more. Again, no offense, just telling my humble opinion, please do not be mad at me ;-)

    Hey Speedtom,
No offense taken of course. Or I wouldn't have asked anybody's opinion...
Me too am a huge fan of the early Cure, saw them life right after the release of this album.(Sheesh...I must be old!)

The funny thing is that I treat my favorite songs like I do my wife. Nobody can touch it, except for myself, hahahaha.
What you'll see is that many people who don't know the song are more favorable of it, than people who do know the song. I think it's an emotional thing. It even goes the other way around. You know a song and later you find out the original. You'll stick to the song you heard first, because that's the one you loved first and felt the emotion that comes with it. Oh well, I don't know if that makes sense anyway.
When I do covers I don't want to sound like a cover band, you know, try to sound like the original, but never succeed....I always try to make it very different, and with these 80's songs, don't want to try to make it sound...eightyish...
Hope that worked out at least.
So, here are the other ones I'm working on at the moment: ok, two of them are end of seventies....but they are not completely done yet.

I'm not familiar with the original song, so I will have to research it, but I like this version.  Sometimes it's fun to rearrange an old hit into something different, and sometimes it's better to leave sacred cows alone.  Anybody who covers the Beatles gets a lot of flak, but I like to hear great songs retold.  Anyway, welcome to the forum, and keep em coming.

    All the best,

    Hi Dick,

I think you have done a good job. Music is well recorded and sits nice. I initial impression is that the vocals could possibly come down a little compared with the rest of the nix, and maybe play around with the vocal strip to reduce some of the ess's. But overall, if you are a newbie, you have made a great start.

    Well done.

Dear Dick, you are right, a cover version needs to be different from the original, otherwise it is just not interesting. Don't think that I am that conservative ;-) I like to mess up originals too, like this stp-tune: https://soundcloud.com/sp..ake/superglatt-vasoline that said, the fact that you changed the song is - generally speaken - not the reason why I don't love it. I mean, listen to the original production...the drums are a joke, compared to drum sounds today. I just think you have taken the strenghts out and not putting enough other cool aspects in to compensate. let's think you may have decided to take "at night all cats are grey" from the same record and have decided to play it faster - maybe I would have loved it. Who knows ;-) Again, this is just my opinion, the other Sonar users seem to like it, so here you go ;-) ...one more thing..."feels like heaven"? after the brillant "primary"? pleeeease ;-)

"..."feels like heaven"? after the brillant "primary"? pleeeease ;-) "

Hahaha.....yep, yep. It's one of my old time favorites. Music is emotion, remember? It just brings back memories. ;)

Anyway: the Rode NT1-A. Well, I guess I like it, but than again, I don't have any experience with other microphones. I do have a Shure SM58, and even though I can hear a slight difference if I compare the two on the same peace of voice(the Rode obviously being a bit more clear and crisp). But if I EQ that out, than later on I couldn't tell you if I recorded a song with the Shure or the Rode. If I start listening to music in that way, I'd rather quit... Again, music is about emotion and not if I hear the frequency between 2kHz and 3kHz clear enough.
But that said, I still want to buy a new microphone... I'm looking to buy the AKG C535EB. Why? Because Sinatra sang that microphone. I think it's cool.
I listened to several microphone comparisons on youtube or soundcloud, and even though you can hear some slight differences, it's not enough to be really bothered by it. It's just a small ingredient in the pan. The utterly most important one being your voice....;)

    But hey...that's just me...

Dear Dick, I agree, sometimes this whole production thing gets a little too much into theoretical physics. Not my cup of tea. Or not yours either, so if you say you like the Rode NT1, that's all I need to know! Thanks for your information, and please keep the (cool) 80ties song covers coming!

    That sounded pretty good.

I like it but have never heard the original so I have no other point of reference.
    It is recorded well.

Sound is good, not a song I know particularly well, but I like what you're going for.

I also listened to the FF track. Again sounds good, but the reverb on the vocal sounds a little off to me compared to the guitar - vox sounds a bit roomy whereas the guitar doesn't if that makes sense.

I don't know this song, so this is just listener impressions of the recording. All the individual tracks sound strong, but I'm wondering about the sound stage: the use of microphone placement, pan, reverb, and compression to place instruments relative to each other. Right now it sounds like I'm right next to the vocalist, but the rest of the band is 25 feet away in the opposite corner of the room. Someone above mentioned the relative level of the vocal, I'm sure we're talking about the same thing.

Hey Paulo, I checked FF, and found out that the reverb used for vocals were different than for instruments. I corrected that and now there's a new version. Thanks man, you're really good!

Hey MusicSnob, I'll see if I can check that later this week Thanks for the input!
