Even better, if you already own the original 5 Iris addon sound libraries, the 2 new ones are free. Got the email today with the serial numbers for Altered and Modular.

    Hi Scook
Are you sure about this - I own all five and have heard nothing from Izotope and when I go into my account they still want to charge me for both of these?
    Thanks
    Nigel

I believe so. Did the same as you when I first heard about it. Went to the iZotope site and saw nothing about the new Iris libraries being free. About the same time an email from iZotope appeared in my inbox with the subject line "Free for you: Two new Iris sound libraries, Altered and Modular." It appears that if you already had Iris+5 you get the two new ones free. The body of the email contained download links and serial numbers along with this text:
A reward for owning everything Iris

As a loyal member of the Iris community, you deserve the newest Iris sound libraries for free! With Altered and Modular, you'll get over 900 new samples and 500 new patches that transform classic instruments and modular synths into fresh material for any project. Enjoy!

I am not the only one that got the email http://www.kvraudio.com/f../viewtopic.php?t=381446

Question for you Iris users: have you found it to be really useful, or just a novelty? Better yet, do you have any songs posted that feature Iris?

When I listen to the demos, I hear interesting and unusual sounds but I can't imagine how I'd apply them. Even at the sale price it seems like too much money for something I'd rarely use. (The same could be said about half the Kontakt libraries I've bought!)

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Bit
    A very good question!
I've had it a while - I did get it relatively cheaply in some sale or another otherwise I think I would have more negative feelings towards it.
I love playing around with it - you can get some really unique sounds - but they are difficult to use in most normal type music (clumsy definition but I hope you know what I mean!)
I do have a couple of instances planned for the project we are working on at the moment - not sure if they will make it through to the final cut though.
However I am hoping that as I experiment more with it and perhaps become more proficient with it, I will be able to use its rather unique capabilities more often.

I bought it at the intro price ... an ill advised move motivated by simply not wanting to have to spend more money later.

IRIS (at least the initial version) is destined to be no more than curio-ware on my machine.  If you're coming up with weird sounds for the next Star Wars movie, it is probably brilliant.  For music, it's far less useful, IMO.  To make it truly useful for musical applications, there are some things I think Izotope could do to the image manipulation mechanisms that could turn it into a killer synth with wonderful sound creation capabilities.  But the image editing, which after all is what you use for creating interesting sound variations on conventional recorded sound, is really crude.  Again, just IMO.  Some people seem to really like this instrument.

more a sound design tool (I guess most will use it like that, due to the CPU hit) .. then chucking that sound into kontakt = leaves cpu room for lush and diva ;)

it depends on you really and the music you make.. AND if you can spend the time changing up a sound to make it into something new. I grew up with sampling something, faffing about with it in the sampler / fx.. bouncing it out to DAT then back into the sampler fx'd.. but that's reflected in the music, that got me into making it.  So to me, that aspect is second nature to try to have something not so "default" that may make the difference.

I would like the functionality to import a pattern / design instead of drawing freehand.. which they haven't implemented.

I haven't had much time to work on music of late.. but it's definitely something I would moreso use for a day or 3 of "prep work" for your own sounds, which is days that you don't feel creative to work on an actual tune is a waste.  Or attacking something already done and you think could add something to a weak element (beside the usual fx)

it's not cheap, due to being a US product for the rest of us (pardon the pun) but the libs are good for it, thats part of it.. the libs think or hhmm like the raw materials, like say IR's etc. so just the vst itself is only part of it.
