Roland XV-88 ...accessing all of the sounds

I am aware that most people these days use soft synths, but I'm hoping that there are a few of us die hard musicians that still use our "old" stuff.

I have a Roland XV-88 which has several banks of sounds.  Each bank has the normal 128 programs.  I have the instrument definition for the XV-88 in my Master Ins file and all the sounds are accessible (even the concert piano expansion card)... except for some (half) of the sounds in the last bank.
In the owner's manual, it has a program list of all the banks...each of course having 128 sounds.  Except the last bank "H" which has 256 sounds.  In the manual...bank "H" is listed as "GM2" .

I can scroll through all 256 sounds manually on the XV-88....but can only access 128 of the sounds via midi from the program changes within Sonar X2.

Is there a procedure for editing the Master.INS file to be able to access all 256 patches?  I am familiar with editing the Master.INS file and have no problem doing so...I've even created my own instrument definitions for synths and drum modules in the past.

It's the part of being able to access the all 256 sounds in this particular bank that I'm having trouble with.

The reason I posted the question here is because I have no problem accessing the sounds directly from the XV-88....I just can't access the sounds via Sonar since I can't get it to do a program change for the extra sounds.  I'm actually surprised that the instrument definition files for the XV-88 that are available for download (where I got mine) do not address this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    MSB and LSB numbers are different for patches over 128.  Check the manual of your Roland and there will be an appendix somewhere showing these.  The INS file will then editing accordingly.  Email me via my signature link if you need any more detailed help.

    You need to get or create an INS file. Here's one for the JP-8080 that may help you get started. ftp://ftp.cakewalk.com/pub/InstrumentDefinitions/.

    INS files are just text files that contain patch lists for your instrument. For example:
    ; ---------------------------  (A semicolon at the start indicates this is a comment.)
    .Patch Names         (This line tells Sonar that lists of patch names follow)
    [Korg 03R/W Bank A]  (The info in brackets describes the instrument)
    0=Ephemerals            (Each line following is the Patch# and Patch name)
    1=Analog Pad
    2=Orch Brass
    3=Galaxies
    4=RosewoodGt
    5=VS Bells

    and so on.

    You may also need a section for different banks of sounds. This is for a Korg N1R. You'll have to get the bank numbers from your XV88 manual.

    .Instrument Definitions

    [N1R]
    Patch[10240]=Korg N1 PrgU
    Patch[10368]=Korg N1 PrgA
    Patch[10496]=Korg N1 PrgB
    Patch[10624]=Korg N1 PrgC
    Patch[11264]=Korg N1 CmbU
    Patch[11392]=Korg N1 CmbA
    Patch[11520]=Korg N1 CmbB
    Patch[11648]=Korg N1 CmbC
    Patch[16000]=r:CM
    Patch[16128]=yDr1
    Patch[16256]=yDr2

    It looks like you may have to manually insert the patch change event via the Event List to access that last bank.

    I copied and pasted this from the manual's patch list.  It's just the first few patch changes...but will show how they are listed.  The last column is the "program change" number.  This is what patch comes up when you try to access it from within Sonar (Master.INS).  The LSB numbers increment by one in between each program change number.

    I need to figure out how to insert the LSB into the patch lists within the Master.INS to be able to access the patches.  Is this possible?

    No. Name          Voice     LSB          PC

    Try this: hit Record on a MIDI track with the input from your synth. Pull up some of those patches. SONAR should record those bank and patch changes and put them into the Event List. You should then be able to go into the List View and see the bank and patch values.

    If you use the latest Roland.INS file that comes with Sonar X2, it has some XV banks in it.

    For example:
    [Roland XV GM]
    0=GM:001 Piano 1
    1=GM:002 Piano 2
    2=GM:003 Piano 3
    3=GM:004 Honky-tonk
    4=GM:005 E.Piano 1
    5=GM:006 E.Piano 2
    6=GM:007 Harpsichord
    7=GM:008 Clav.
    8=GM:009 Celesta
    9=GM:010 Glockenspiel
    10=GM:011 Music Box
    11=GM:012 Vibraphone

    and

    [Roland XV Perform USER]
    0=USER:01 Andreas Cave
    1=USER:02 MIDI Rhodes 1
    2=USER:03 Springy
    3=USER:04 Piano Rhodes
    4=USER:05 HeirBorne XV
    5=USER:06 Humanizer
    6=USER:07 XV Rust Kit
    7=USER:08 MIDI Strings
    8=USER:09 Slicing Svox
    9=USER:10 RevDly Saws
    10=USER:11 SuiteCombo+

    and many more.
