Why Would I Need Sound Forge if I Have WaveLab?
Hey Guys-- I just upgraded WaveLab a few weeks ago and what do I get in my email? $150 off to upgrade Sound Forge 6 to Sound Forge 10! It went from something like $250 to $89 or something crazy like that. So here's my delema and I'm hoping there are some of you out there that have WL and SF and can tell me what I would get with an upgrade from SF 4 to SF 10 that I don't have in WaveLab 8? Both progams allow editing as well as mastering now, and I don't have $90 lying around to spend on something I don't need when there are other things I do, but cost a lot more than $90. My primary (almost exclusive) use of SF 4 is audio editing, and my primary use of WL is mastering--although I haven't tried the editing features yet. I don't want to kick myself later for not taking advantage of this killer SF deal that ends at the end of the month--what would you do? (I've tried the SF10 demo and it does rock).

I can't make the case for you. I do not have WaveLab and $89 seemed reasonable for me to buy into the update. The iZotope tools are locked to SoundForge but the Acoustic Mirror, Audio Restoration, Click and Crackle Removal, Clipped Peak Restoration, Noise Reduction, Wave Hammer and elastique Timestretch are all available in SONAR as 64bit DX effects. Granted they are all destructive non-realtime effects but still nice to have around.

That's a sweet deal. I have SoundForge 9. How do I get the $90 upgrade? Do you have a link?

Logon to your Sony account then go to the store and select the upgrade. The discount is automatically applied.

I know CW offered me a sweet deal to upgrade too, but I think it was because I hadn't in so long. http://recp.rm05.net/servlet/MailView?m=5472559&r=MzE1NDM3NjI5MzcS1&j=MzE5NTMyMzU1S0&mt=1

Does anyone know if SF10 is 64bit? Also do the Direct-X plug-ins show up on Sonar like SF9?

SF10 is 32bit. It does include 64bit DX versions of some of the effects, intended for Vegas, that show up in 64bit SONAR. I detailed them above.

So it's no longer possible to use Timestretch non-destructively in an FX bin?

There is a new Zplane timestretch tool that shows up as a 64bit plugin (there is a 32bit version too). The old one is still in SF but is 32bit only so it does not show up in 64bit SONAR. The new one did not work non-destructively for me, in X2a, but worked when I dropped in it the fx bin and intermediately processed the effect.
