Danke, Tom! There's really no big secret to the drum sound.... It all starts with a really good kit, played by a really good drummer, in a nice sounding room. For the most part, I'm looking to make it sound as natural as possible, so all the mics and preamps in the world won't help me if the kit itself is crappy.... If you get the tracking part right, the mix is (ideally) all about polishing the shiny bits and fitting the kit in with the other instruments.

Of course, that all *sounds* simple enough....  If you're genuinely curious, I'd be happy to run down the tracking and mix process. But like I said, for the basic drum sound, we're not really doing anything extraordinary or unusual.

    Thanks again!

Dear Conrad, thanks for the great offer! But I believe I would not understand too much, you would just waste your precious time...but you are right, to keep it natural is the art of good drums. I myself have only used drum machines so far - I tried to record drums with our drummer in our rehearsal room, but it ended in a disaster ;-) the kits, the mics, all needs to be right. It is hard. But I will continue to try. In the meantime, drum machines have to lay down my beats!
