What's happening to me???
For the last couple of weeks, believe it or not, I've become totally obsessed w/ the idea of a non-black (!!!) cherry sunburst-ish Les Paul. And I mean obsessed. A Gibson, if I were carrying my weight w/ music financially. A vintage Gibson if I were rich. More likely, but still out of reach for now, an Epiphone. (If it's as good as the one I have here, that's as much as I need.) But the Gibson below is the ultimate guitar for me - right knobs, right fret inlays, right hardware, right finish (could be a bit cherry-er, but I think the pic is a bit on the yellow side.) Funnily enough, a friend of ours just wrote me saying that he was selling his. Vintage. I mean, totally vintage but in perfect condition. Last time we visited him, he put it in my hands and had a tough time taking it back. No way I'd have the money to buy that, but for the first time ever, I thought I could sell my old start and put the money on the guitar I really want. I never thought I could even think about it. I love those Les Pauls...

Hahaha! Man, speaking of glass see-thru....I call this the 8th wonder of the world. All lucite...solid....all 22 lbs of it....straight from the Custom Shop. Whew...what a Les Paul! I was quite astonished to open the case and see this! Unfinished neck...plays like a dream, sounds fantastic...so darned heavy if you play 30 minutes with it standing up, you'll need to go to the Dr. in the morning. I can't even play it sitting down. It hurts my leg and it jacks the neck up to where you HAVE to wear a strap with it even while sitting down. Shame too...it's a wonderful guitar believe it or not. I'm probably going to put it in a glass case for display. I almost considered hanging it off my rack and then thought.....if anything were to pull those molly bolts out of my wall, this thing would do it. LOL! -Danny

Well, you sure won't see me with one of those Danny! Heck, my next custom is being made with Black Limba (aka Korina). It's the shape of an LP double-cut (like my others) and with a tummy-cut unlike the blue one that I sold to Space Cowboy (which was wenge with full caps front and back - HEAVY!). I like wandering around while I play (or attempt to play - lol) so a light guitar is so much easier on the back.

LOL - my weapon of choice is a Tobias Killer-B and even at 17,5lbs I absolutely love playing with it, standing up, siting down, I don't care. A lighter guitar usually makes me feel stupid when on stage I have an awesome strap for it though. Rain - that is a cool guitar! Nothing is wrong with you, we all want one

I like wandering around while I play (or attempt to play - lol) so a light guitar is so much easier on the back. You'd never see me with one either Craig. The one I showed you was a gift from an old friend of mine. I know...awesome friend. I don't really like vintage guitars though I have several in my collection. Though it pains me to say this, I bought them for what they were worth/would be worth instead of "wow, I love this guitar!" The way I play/style I play just demands a different type of guitar which is why I tend to favor Carvin and Ibanez. The cool things about the Carvin guitars I own are they have that cross between an LP/Strat feel and sound with their own sound as well. Faster neck, 24 frets, and the weight is perfect for me. I like to look at Pauls but don't enjoy playing them nor am I crazy about how they sound. I do like Strats though but prefer the Fender HM Strat line that is discontinued. I have a few of those that I still play from time to time. Not sure why they never really took off, but man...to me, the perfect strat. Not quite as elegant looking as the regular strat, but the sound and feel to me obliterates a regular strat. Rain: you only live once brother and can't take the cash with you. If you are paying your bills in good shape, buy the guitar. With the way this world is, though it may be sort of foolish to "live for today" in my opinion, "tomorrow is promised to no one" so smoke 'em if you got 'em. :) Quick story....I promise... Years ago when I was driving around in my dream car (I got #12 of the first I.R.O.C. Z28's built in 1985 and the second delivered in the state of NJ at the time.) I was a Senior in high school and worked after school for many years, so I had the money saved. My dad hooked everything up for me but of course I had to pay him. The paymensts were $298 per month which I had no problems affording. I loved that car so much, when it was completely on it's way out in 2001, people would hum the Sanford and Son theme song when I'd drive by. LOL! I had exhaust pipes dragging on the ground, the poor car was a mess....I just couldn't let it go. It still ran and never screwed me to where it had to be towed in all those years. Well I had always wanted a Corvette but was always afraid I wouldn't be able to afford one consistently. You know, it looked good on paper that I might squeak by but if something bad happened in my life, the first thing that would be repo'd would be the car. Well, in 99 I signed a record deal and made some good money. Yet I was still afraid that I'd have a problem affording a car of that magnitude. I finally break down and decide it's time. The one I had to buy was 55k but I figured, I might as well crash and burn with dignity! I have not regretted my decision one time. I know that a car is way more expensive than a LP but my point is....sometimes getting that something you want pushes you a little harder to make sure you are secure enough to KEEP it. I had a few things in my life go sour. $510 per month on for a car as well as $210.00 per month for car insurance was quite a burden on me when those things in my life went a bit sour. That car was so important to me, it made me get involved in things I would have never gotten involved with. Not bad things, work oriented things. Musical things like mastering etc, construction and remodeling, teaching martial arts, all things I was good at that I had never thought of doing in different aspects. For example, I always recorded music and wrote songs...but I never got into mastering and video editing etc. I always did construction on the side...but never considered working for someone doing side jobs. I competed in martial arts for years and helped my superiors out when they needed me...but never thought about teaching it more on a serious level or teaching a specialty black belt class. All these things secured me to where I'd never lose that car man. Sometimes the heat of having something that is either right along your means or a bit over your means....can push you in directions that wind up being good directions down the road as well as helping you in keeping that object of desire. :) It sure did work for me. Think it over brother. As long as you're not in danger of living on the street and can eat...you will thank yourself and be happy you made the purchase. :) -Danny

My dad has an 1982 silverburst 25th anniversary custom Les Paul my mom got him for Chrsitmas. Your fingers float across the fret board. It's got fancy tuning pegs like a batman utility belt. These little winders pop up out for winding strings. It has the pearl inlays and ebony finger board. Great. Man that thing is heavy. My shoulder is tired when I play it a while. The cool thing is my dad like the guitar so much I got handed down his 66 gretch hollow body tennesseab Chet Atkins. I use it all the time Plus it's not very heavy. I wish I could afford a corvette. I had a pontiac 84 fiero in 1988. Threw a rod in the engine and had a fire truck following me down the street with sirens on as I left a trail of black smoke behind me. I was pretty dumb in 1989. Funny ... But good times.

Cool story, Danny. :) And nice LP. I think I remember you mentioning it but it's nice to finally see it. You know, it took me forever to learn that lesson. In fact, the one time I didn't settle for less in my life was when I bought my American Fender strat + 59 Bassman in my early 20s. But, otherwise, I've always tried to find more affordable compromises. And that didn't change until I met my wife. At that point I was making enough money to not be able to spend it all. lol I'd look at stuff I wanted, considered whether I really needed it or not and settle for an inexpensive compromise. The most obvious example was the Mac I had always wanted. Took my wife to finally convince me that I should get what I wanted. All that being said, even though I've since learned my lesson (and looking back I regret not spending that money before), considering that I've quit my job 2 years ago and that my wife has been supporting us ever since, it's kind of easy to refrain from those urges. Took me forever to even learn to ask for trivial stuff like books and dvd's such. And she's been spoiling me, anyway. But sure, the minute I have my own money, I know that I want my brand spanking new genuine standard Gibson Les Paul which will probably cost me $2-2500. That's what I've learned. A few years back, I wouldn't have considered anything above the cheapest Gibson LP Studio.

When I sold my family business, the girl I was seeing wanted me to stay retired other than music type stuff. She was pretty loaded like Donald Trump...lol....but I NEVER asked her for a thing. I couldn't even lightly discuss something I thought was cool or it would show up. So I was always extra careful. It's a great situation to be in knowing someone loves you that much...it truly is. But like you, I would never take advantage of that. I had my own money and wanted to buy my own things. So I totally get where you're coming from. Make sure you let us see that awesome guitar when you get it! :) Craig: Hahaha thanks for sharing that! You know...after all these years, I had no idea Roger sang that song. I always knew the voice was different when that song came on but I never really put it together until I just watched that video! I think I was in 4th or 5th grade when I heard that song. As I got older I always liked it and knew it was Queen, but it never dawned on me that "hey, that's not Freddie!?" So thanks for sharing that with me....it was great to hear it as well as see who was actually singing! What's really cool now is...you can hear the Freddie vocal layers all over the left and right sides...amazing production there that isn't even dominant...it just makes you go "wow." :) -Danny

Mooch4056 You could probably buy a 1984 Pontiac fiero for way less than 2k What!? I dunno what I am even talking about LOL Paul....the coolest thing about the Fiero....it handled like an AFX/Tyco car! I used to beat the heck out of my friend's Fiero all the time. We could NEVER get that thing to slide out around a turn...it just would not lose grip! Fun car to drive too especially if you had the 6 cylinder. The only issue with it....yep, they blew rods and...even as small as I am, they were a bear to get in and out of. Harder to get in and out of than a newer Vette, that's for sure. But just as fun to drive because you didn't fear the Fiero. The Vette IS predictable once you get used to it, but you always have a chance of eating a tree especially with traction control off. But the Fiero, pure fun and total control. -Danny

However you spell it. I didn't take very good care of it. I owned it from when I was 19-21 years old. So... 1989- 1991 or 92. I think. Somewhere around there. Man, my immaturity level was insane at that age, not to mention my ego. Had I purchased the car as an "adult" it probably would have lasted a lot longer. The Fiero abuse was a mistake. But a minor one compared to others I've done through out my twenties. That can be a whole thread or book..... Dumb mistakes Paul did through out his twenties. Chapter one .... The driving and maintenance abuse of a 1984 Fiero..... Chaper two .... Jennifer ..the girl that got away.... Chapter three..... Too much booze on a Saturday night and an ass whooping .. Chapter 4...... How did I manage to get through college and now what do I do ... Chapter 5 ....wasted 3 years of my life playing with that band full of egos ... Chapter 6.... Where is the antibiotic cuz man this thing itches ....hahahahahaha...just kidding ....really ..... Seriously ... Kidding Ect..ect on the chapters

Rain: I'm with Danny on this one. If you're paying your bills, go ahead and get that guitar! My wife strongly encouraged me to buy two guitars; my Martin HD28 and my Carvin CT4M. They are more money than I would typically spend on gear (I am not a pro) but I have never regretted buying them. Let us know how it turns out.
