3D TV- Yay or Nay???
Looks like I will soon be in the market for a new TV. Will probably be a 55" LED HDTV, and I like Sony. So what is the general consensus on 3D TV??? Is it all it's cracked up to be? Looks like to me wearing the glasses would be fatiguing... a real drag. AND, I have mono-vision since I had Lasik eye surgery- one eye is for reading, the other for distance. Is it a passing fad or the next big thing I can't live without? Opinions welcome and requested!

Great question! Send me one to try out and I'll post a review. (I should note that I only prefer screens larger than 65" - Let me know when you need my address for shipping. HTH.)

3D TV is suffering from the same problem HD TV had when it was first launched, lack of content. We have 400 SkyTV channels, only one is 3D and NONE of their on demand library is 3D. Glasses is not a problem, plenty of people wear them every day (normal glasses, not 3D ones, though you could if you want...) without complaining. There's no contest like the VHS/Betamax or Blueray/HDTV to worry about as the content works on all systems. If you get the type that uses passive glasses (like the ones you get at the cinema) then you can use them at the cinema as well. Just as every TV is now HD by default, all TVs will soon be 3D by default. Maybe then the broadcasters will start programming more 3D content.

I appreciate the views so far. I hate the idea of having to have yet one more gadget to contend with (the glasses), AND, as I stated earlier, I have monovision...so I'm not sure it would even work that well for me. My own opinion is that I hope 3D is a passing fad. But the jury is still out.....

3D TV- Yay or Nay??? I've been pondering the same question Tony. I honestly don't know whether or not it's worth plumping for 3D. It also means I'd need a new 3D Blu-ray player and some 3D films, as well as a 3D recorder - but as Karyn mentions, the imminent likelihood of a lot of 3D TV broadcasts seems a long way off at the moment over here.

I got a 55" Sony w/sound system, 3d DVD player and 3 pairs of glasses not long ago and the family loves it. I hooked it all up, turned it on and unlike all the crap I've spent thousands more for in the "computer world"...it worked. No excuses, BS agreements, fixes, updates, upgrades, workarounds or bloated anything and/or crap that just doesn't work. Yep, it has been a very pleasant investment with no complaints or negative effects. Will it last or just a passing fad?...what do I care?...nothing lasts forever anyway but it's great while it's happening. With all the DVDs I've watched and the ones that are coming like Star Trek I sure don't think it's going away anytime soon. I can also say that I have more faith in it than I do in the ones making software; and it's a faith based on performance and what I actually get for my money. Oh, the picture quality?...fantastic...I'd say it's kind of like the screen being a window rather than what it is except a window with no glass in it because not only is there an incredible depth of field but it extends front and back. Love it. I get a great time out of people ducking, weaving and laughing about the objects seemingly to enter the room. Fun stuff. I'm just responding as you asked Tony. People that have reasons for not having or wanting it are not of any concern to me and it's fine by me for them to think whatever floats their boat.

When I am watching TV. Or walking around. Or just sitting there thinking about funny things like farts or the three stooges, I will just rub my eyes really hard for a long time. When I stop rubbing them I see all kinds of colors and spots and floaters and even on occasion 3D. It's just a good. I hope rubbing my eyes is here to stay.

Good stuff! Yesterday I went to Best Buy and looked at the latest Sony "4K" Ultra TV and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (The TV has every feature available and is 3D capable as well as touting the new 4K technology.) If you have not seen this technology, and have a spare minute, go see it it!!! It is like looking at REALITY, not a TV picture! However, brace yourself when you see the price tag.....

£25k for a TV ? So that's what it must be like to have too much money huh ? It's obvious by the pricing here now that 3D TV's are either dying on their arses or about to be superceded. From what I have read, the new 3D TV's will not require glasses, which is the thing that has always put me off the idea of owning one. I tried some in the shop once and they were very heavy compared to regular sunglasses. I think they are lighter now though. That said, still not much in the way of content, but at current prices if I needed a new TV they are not much more than regular HD, so I would probably get one. I did see a cool Samsumg one a few weeks ago that had a very thin and clear surround so that the frame just blends into the backgound giving the impression of a totally frameless screen, which despite my inner sensible self keeping on with ....but you don't need a new tv, has left an impression on me. D'oh ! Why did I have to look ?

TV... or not TV..... THAT is the question. Whether tis nobler to watch old skool TV or the new fangled 3D.... who knows....? Not I, for a certainty... Why not spend more time in the studio? Just get nicer dual monitors and call it a day and money well spent.

Hi, NAY for now ... I think it will be about 5 more years before the technology and the bandwidth issues get improved to allow for better services in television. It's bad enough that the number of HD channels is still very small. The tough issue is that the equipment that films HD, and 3D, is not readily available out there and that means that most stuff that is filmed is not yet ready for those processes, not to mention that the cost of the HD cameras or the 3D cameras (and then the editing process!!!!!) has a cost these days that is prohibitive. Essentially, buying something that good and that big at this time is a waste. Five years from now might make better sense ... specially if the majority of these signals get delivered as a wireless service ... but at this point, if you have cable, you are probably looking at our children's lifetime, not ours!

Wow! I am going to have to eat some SERIOUS crow here... So I ended up buying a Sony Smart 3D HDTV, 55W802, ($1800 on sale), and it is awesome. AND... I learned a lot about 3D in the process. As per every salesman I spoke to, a 3D set will yield a better picture in 2D than a plain 2D set. So that's why I ended up with a 3D set.... in fact, it's difficult to buy a quality set that isn't 3D. Anyway, the 3D on this set is passive (no batteries in the glasses), and it is a BLAST to watch. So I stand corrected. I will watch 3D! To top it off Sony offers 1 free year of Netflix, 1 free year of HULU Plus, and 30 days of Music Unlimited with the purchase of this set. (I got mine at Best Buy.) (It has built-in Wi-Fi.) I can highly recommend this TV.

I didn't talk with sales people Tony but I agree with them. It is a great TV. My glasses have batteries and still very light. We all wear glasses so maybe they bother folks that don't but we put them on a it's no issue. Congrats! If you didn't get a 3d Blu-ray DVD player...you're in for another treat when ya do. :)

What if you wear spectacles, do you wear the 3D glasses over the top of them? I'm not sure how all this works.

Steve we've had two different brands. The Intel that were for 3d PC went over the glasses but they were a little smaller and heavier than Sony. We don't have any issues with Sony glasses. Light and fit right over our eyeglasses. Sorry Steve, they were NVidia not Intel.

Yep, I suppose as long as you can get them on, even over your spectacles, they will work fine. Mine are SUPER light... hardly know they're on. 4 pairs came with the TV.

Sounds like you picked up really nice TV there! I was watching TV last night for the first time in a long time. I seen a nice nature show so I started watching it. My wife says, Why is the screen double? I say, I think it's just the way the cameraman wanted to shoot the scene....duh......it was a 3d channel.
