Soundcloud Replay Gain?

I've been noticing that Soundcloud makes everything louder than when the same file plays back in FOOBAR.

Is there a guideline or way to anticipate how much level it boosts?

best regards,
mike

It probably has to do with the difference between +4dBV and -10dBu.

    HTH.

I'm still trying to figah out if the +4dBV and -10dBu stuff is some sorta joke. :-)

    e.g.
    +4dBv = 1.584893192 vAC RMS
    or
    +4dBu = 1.227652988 vAC RMS

    -10dBu = 0.244948974 vAC RMS
    or
    -10dBV = 0.316227766 vAC RMS

Seriously though... Soundcloud is louder than Foobar 2000 so it must be louder. Or something like that?

Far from it Mike. I really didn't understand it at all.

Play them side by side, mono, one through the left, one through the right. Or run both signals through a mixer and pan opposite. It's some kind of limiting-compression that they use.

I downloaded one and it got quieter.

I uploaded one and it got louder.

Was the download the same format as the upload? That is weird. I suppose the download is re-formatted to allow for differences in equipment, and the upload is re-formatted for web streaming? But what would the differences be?

Yes, I downloaded the .mp3 and uploaded the .mp3.

I'm guessing that the Soundcloud "player" just jacks the volume level up to make it sound louder.

    Is it getting compressed?

    I guess so.

A mp3 uploaded and then downloaded seems to make a round trip with out a level change.

The level boost is only during the playback.
