I would like to know this too. I usually send the required info as a .txt with the MIDI file. Are you talking about simple markers as in Intro, Verse, Chorus etc? or more like tempo or time sig changes? Mike

Inserted Midi Markers should get saved automatically (under the midi spec) if saved as a SMF file. Type 0 or 1 doesn't matter

Mike yes that's exactly what im talking about mike. i create a project and write all the midi drums parts first untill finished, then i create, as you say simple markes for; intro, verse, bridge, exc. im trying to find a way to start a new project, import this file with all the markers laid out with the clip. thanks

ps- I usually do the same thing as well mike, create a text file with marker locations , BPM, liner notes, things like that. but sending this project to 4 different members im trying to make it easier somehow.

If I save a MIDI only project with tags as a MIDI file, then open up the .mid file, the tags are there. If you import the file, the tags are gone. So, don't import the file, just open it as a project.

So, don't import the file, just open it as a project. that was the first thing i thought of but I m trying to figure a way to save it embedded. thanks though. because in some cases, ive made up to 200 edits in these projects, that's what I don't want to save, previous info. I want a clean slate, new project with markers only. in one of these projects after drum edits only,(over 300 easy) the project takes almost 5-10 seconds just to save. this is a tell tale sign that it indeed is saving previous historys of edits. even after resaves. I have 10 songs like this.

I guess I don't understand. When I save a project as a .mid file, the tags are stored in the .mid file. What do you mean by embedded? The tags are in the MIDI file created by SONAR.

So Steve, you're saying that if you save a MIDI file, export it and send it to me I can create a new project, import that MIDI file and your markers will show on my timeline? Mike

No. I am saying if I Save a project as a MIDI file (no export process needed), send it to you and you Open the MIDI file in SONAR the tags will show on your timeline. Not using the export/import functions, using the save/open functions. The SONAR import process strips the tags from the file.

Ahh, I never even considered that. Good one. I don't know if Charles is sharing with other DAW's and is hoping to embed the markers as part of the midi info or if everyone is using Sonar in which case this just may be what he's looking for. I know it covers my needs. Thanks. Mike

The point is they ARE part of the MIDI file. It is the SONAR import process that strips the tags out of the MIDI file. But I am missing something that CB is looking for.

Well yeah, it is not clip based, it is file based. I guess that is the issue.

thanks guys. appreciate the try. I knew I could do it file based but that's not what I wanted to do. that's why I put in the title "export" because I thought there might be a way to export it with the 'markers" info embedded into the midi file. so I could save it just as a midi clip and not a CWP. much the same way a midi groove clip stores info.

well essentially you ARE "exporting" the file, just as a smf and not a CWP - can't the receiving PC and Sonar just open it as a midi file and re-add all the other data, the re-save as a CWP??? Personally I am still NOT exactly sure of what you are trying to achieve...btw would a RIFF file help you out here?
