Help!! Missing audio in clip split into layers

I really hope someone can help direct me.

1)  I have a huge project that contains 8 complete songs, one after another  with each part contained in channel folders (Drums, bass, etc). It has all the vocal clips split by song and then has layers associated for each. So example: Channel 4,5,and 6 each have vocal tracks grouped into a song folder: "Folder-Vocals song 1>Main Vox, Back up's etc", with about 4 to 5 layers in each of multiple takes.
I was  going to edit channel 4 that contains 4 layers of takes but when I play it back the clip shows the wav form, the meters are showing sound but no audio is on that set of layers. I have unmuted all the layers and still see that Cakewalk meters on the console and track meters are seeing some kind of sound but nothing is audible. The funny thing is that earlier in the day the tracks played fine. The other vocal tracks play fine in other songs  (all of the other music channels have sound). Except for a few other songs, the same thing happens.

I've noticed out of the 8 songs it seems that it also happened on 3 others all of a sudden. I have had no problems until this happened.  So before i go any further I don't want to delete or corrupt anything I am asking for help.

If the wav is showing on the meters that it is reacting to some sort of audio but nothing is audible form these tracks, is there another mute type setting I may be missing? I've also checked to make sure the envelopes aren't zero's out on that clip. all of them are set to where sound should be present.

2) I did save multiple back ups just in case some weird thing happened so I would be able to import files into another. I tried to do this with the tracks listed above. The tracks play fine in the back up but when I import them into this channel, it imports silence. No wav form or audio. Again I've checked things before exporting to a file and it's all there. when I import that same file it is importing silence. Strange things happening all of a sudden.

Thanks for any help I can get and sorry for long post but wanted to make sure I explain everything as it is happening.

Thanks
Tom

Oh the reason I am importing into this project is because I am in the 1st stage of clip  clean up /mixing stage for vocals. the other reason is because if I export a few tracks from this into any other back up there is no audio being exported.

Another weird thing is that if I save a vocal track and export it as a wav file then open that file and select play, audio is heard but as soon as I import it into my project it imports a clip with a straight line and no wav form, thus no audio on that clip.

    Thanks

I went to the audio file for this project and located the clip (6740) I can play it from that location so I imported it into the channel where the other clip is, solo's it and made the output channel directly to my master out. It will not play and the wav and audio  seems to be present in the meters so it does the same thing as above but again plays fine if I right click the file withing the audio folder on my back up drive and use media player. I even tried making a new channel and importing the clip I know has audio and nothing again. This is strange.

I don't dare to start guessing what actually is wrong, but wanted to mention that the waveform picture is just video, you don't need it to hear the audio, and a missing waveform is not an indication of missing audio. Emptying the Picture Cache folder usually helps, and SONAR redraws the waves on start.

I don't remember experiencing partial muteness of layers. You have checked both the clips and the track headers for possible "Mute"-commands, I assume? (No "no-parking"-signs in the upper left corners of the clips?). I don't remember if Event List shows audio events as well, but perhaps you should check that as well.

Please confirm: When you are auditioning the problem layers, you are simultaneously hearing other tracks play normally? (to exclude the possibility of accidental soloing on an empty track or something).

Kalle, thanks for the reply. I have checked the channel and individual clips for muting and none of them are muted. As far as other tracks in the song, yes they play fine. It is only the vocal channels that are experiencing this situation on three of the 8 songs and I did notice it is only the ones that have multiple clips in layers..........the other songs I've already condensed into a single wav clip after editing. All the songs vocal folders are on different channels so even the layers wouldn't be in the same channel effecting it.

    Thanks

ok so here's what I did so far and it may be the solution but I still want to know what may have caused this in the first place.

I made a new folder and manually imported every single vocal clip into the new folder channels from the audio file. Now I ave sound when playing them. The original channels still have nothing so it has got to be something in the folder or folder settings maybe? Is there any type of audio in or out settings in regards to a folder?

    Thanks

Did you make sure the track output was still assigned to your Master?

A quick fix is to use CTRL A to highlight all, go to "tracks" menu and select Output and then select Master.

Channels for audio?? I don't have a Channel option on my audio tracks or folders. I thought channels are for MIDI only (???)

I actually have all my outputs going to category buses then the master.

By channels I meant on the console "Channel or track 1" sorry I call them channels.

    Thanks

Oh yes, of course. My bad. People often call them channels when they're in Console View.

Ya, I new what you meant as that's what they are called on a mixer.

Ok Same difference, but make sure you follow each signal chain and that all the busses are therefore assigned correctly to the master.

It can only be a signal path is not complete or you have something muted. Try routing the offending "Channel" to the master and see what happens. Remove or bypass all efxs too.

And I don't understand what you mean by a folder? There are folders for midi soft synths but not for audio, Audio is in a audio track. I'm not sure what happens if you drop an audio clip into a synth folder???

I would never use layers anyways, much easier to just record a new track for each take and work with those. Layers seem to cause a lot of people problems and I can see why.
You can always insert a few new audio tracks and drag those layers to them too. Just be careful with draging out of sync.

Re:Help!! Missing audio in clip split into layers 2013/06/04 07:27:09 (permalink)
So I ended up importing the missing clips into my project clip by clip from the audio file. I had to insert a new track to import them to because importing to the existing track still wouldn't play the clips. When I imported them I imported as a time  clip so they all lined up. None of the clips were muted or were the tracks in any way.(I went through everything very carefully. ) Once I got them all back and working i made 5 back up copies just in case it happens again. I removed all the Fx and wiped the board clean so I can start over. There were no Fx on the tracks that were missing. I had Fx only on the busses for them so I decided to wipe the board and create a "Raw tracks" file so I could always go back to the beginning.

In the track view I made (audio not midi) folders for each. Ex: Track #4= Vocal folder and in the folder contain all the tracks and takes for that song. Easier for me to organize things because I can expand a folder to work on just that song and have its own set of fx and routing.

Thanks for everyone's help. If I ever figure out what caused only a few tracks to do this I will be sure to post it.

    Thanks
    Tom
