crashing

Sonar is starting to crash frequently to the point where I can't even use it. I hear a click & then it doesn't respond any more. never heard anything like that before. I frequently get the Win 7 message USB audio device is not recognized, even when it's working & there is sound, but I don't think this is related...  any suggestions wd be appreciated!!!

Update** - It may be primarily on one song...too soon to tell... can one project be corrupted? Any way to save it? Copy it to another blank project? Thanks again!

You shouldn't have to reboot...Launch Task Manager, sort the processes by "name", select the sonar process, right mouse and "kill"...the OS will actually kill the process. My concern is that you may be overloading the USB...What other "stuff" are you running on the USB interface at the same time? Also try moving the USB cable to a different port (shouldn't really make a difference since, unless you have a separate USB interface card, the data streams of all USB devices will be processed on the same thread.

I'm assuming you are running a USB2 interface..In the past I had problems running a wifi USB nic on the same USB interface....this is why I run firewire since the there is no sharing of bandwidth between USB and Firewire; they run on multiple threads..

Sounds like your audio interface is getting wonkey on you.  Might want to check the power/interface cables to the device.

There are folks here in the forum who will do all possible to assist you - we need more detailed information, both on the system you are running, the settings for your interface and Sonar, and where things are plugged in, etc...

So, please review and respond to the following:

    1.  Is your system up to current service levels for Windows?

    2.  What precise model audio interface are you using, and please also supply the exact driver version for it, and if possible the firmware level too.

    3.  You indicate this is a USB interface.  Are you plugged into a USB 2 port?  USB 1?  USB 1.1? USB 3?

    4.  IF you have the audio interface specified for your default audio device in Windows, can you please let us know if playing songs through Windows Media Player works with no problems?

    5.  Can you please detail one project that consistently produces this error/crash situation?  In your details, please provide a list of all plugins used for the project, and additionally identify which are 32-bit.  Please note that if you have any 32-bit plugins loaded into any current project, Bitbridge will be running, and this can often remain running after Sonar closes, and this causes problems when trying to Get Sonar running again.  (if you see Bitbridge still running after Sonar closes, kill it with the Task Manager, and Sonar should be able to be started up again).

    6.  For testing purposes, I would like you to start a brand new Normal project, and then insert an audio track, then click on the audio track to select it, import a song file (MP3, WMA, etc) to the inserted audio track, and then hit play and post back on whether or not that works.  This will give an idea of whether or not a basic operation in Sonar will work.

    7.  Also, please list the Sample Rate specified in Sonar and the Sample Rate as specified for your audio interface.  Please note that they MUST match, or freaky weirdness will ensue.

So, please review and respond to the above request for information, and I (along with others in the forum), will try to get you stabilzed.

If you have Windows 7 running WITH Service Pack 1, you should be running the X2A version of Sonar.  This version addresses a great number of fixes as well as enhancements, over the original X2 release.  (something like 250+ bugs were addressed in X2a).

Thanks for yr ideas! I need to test some of these things out & then reply. All this started recently when i changed computers & went fr xp to Win 7. Things were fine before. It may be the Edirol UA 5 is just too old for Win 7.

That would be a driver issue with your sound card.

I used to get this with my Delta 1010 as Maudio have some of the worst drivers out there. My work around? I bought a new card and now use a MOTU Express for Sonar and the Delta 1010 for Pro Tools.

    Sonar Platinum 64 bit > Pro tools 10.3.2 >Intel i7 3770K > 16Gb Ram > Gigabyte Z77-D3H Motherboard> NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2 GB > ATi RADEON HD5700 > 240GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD> Win 10 home 64 bit> Delta 1010 > MOTU Audio Express > MA-15D's > NI Ultimate 9 > NI Kontrol S61 1.1 > NI MAschine Studio 2.3 / KORG MS-20 Mini - Arturia MicroBrute > KORG SQ1 - KORG Kaoss Pad KP3 > iPad and IO Dock 2 running various bits > Bunch of guitars >
