How can perform 303-like slide to note (tremolo between two notes) in X2 score editor?
Hello, I would like to perform 303-like slide to note (tremolo between two notes) sound, how can I do it with Sonar X2 score editor? I mean not just write a text note, but also perform it by a mono synth. And is it possible to do the same with the piano roll (like the "Set note ends to start of next note" command in Reaper)? Thank you

Not sure what a "303-like" slide means... Possibly you could do what I think this is with the modwheel control. Or if you're talking about a glide between notes, that's called portamento. Some synths have a portamento control and others don't so it depends on the synth you're using.

Select a synth engine that has a portamento function. best regards, mike

Hi thanks for answer. Yes, you are right, I want to do portamento. daveny5 Not sure what a "303-like" slide means...
Here is the example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQr74oWerI0 mike_mccue Select a synth engine that has a portamento function.
I have selected the synth engine with portamento sound preset (reFX PlastiCZ or DiscoDSP Corona). But to perform the portamento with that synths the following note has to be triggered before the previous note ends. So I have the question if I should do it manually using piano roll or notation editor (but I can not imagine how to do that using notation editor). Or if I could do it with the portamento symbol like this: And I definitely prefer the latter method (portamento symbol in staff editor).

I came back to see if someone had an answer for you... I don't... it's over my head. If I recall how I have done it in the past, the synth just does a portamento effect in between notes... no over lap is required. I now realize that this isn't what you are asking about. I'm curious to learn about the solution. Good luck. best regards, mike

I may be missing something. The video clip does not have any portamento. What it does have is an envelope controlled filter sweep with some resonance. Are you talking about the "squeak" sound that becomes more prominent while the sequence is playing and the guy messes with the filter cutoff?

Hi, here it is more clear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWnK7LWOvkU And here is the Wikipedia citation: "The TB-303 sequencer has some unique features that contribute to its characteristic sound. During the programming of a sequence, the user can determine whether a note should be accented, and whether it should employ portamento, a smooth transition to the following note. The portamento circuitry employs a fixed slide time, meaning that whatever the interval between notes, the time taken to reach the correct pitch is always the same." mike_mccue I'm curious to learn about the solution.?
I think that it is not so easy with the notation (staff) editor, because it looks like, that there are a different implementation. I think that dedicated Notation SW use something like expression commands, but VSTi synths use mostly overlapped notes. So I think it is not so easy to make it general.

dubdisciple This may help : http://audio.tutsplus.com...-acid-synth-sequences/
Thanks, this is the great tutorial. I can do it with overlapped notes in piano roll editor, but is it generally possible using the staff notation and portamento symbol in Sonar X2 or somewhere else? Or maybe with step pattern?

Fog have you attempted doing it in d16's synth ? http://www.d16.pl/index.php?menu=10
Hi, I have not tried the d16's synth . I am not so interested in the 303 sound, but generally in slides and portamento. I can do that using the piano roll editor (overlapped notes) and DiscoDSP Corona or reFX PlastiCZ. But is there any way to do it with staff editor and portamento symbol?

Not sure how well the step sequencer in Sonar supports glide. worth a try since the sequencer in a 303 is a step sequencer. There's always the option to use rebirth via rewire. Have not tried but if it works that may provide the most authentic experience.

thanks again. The X2 step sequencer with glide support would be perfect. I just would like to now what is the easiest ways to do that and I do not like piano roll, I prefer notation and step sequencer.

I just would like to now what is the easiest ways to do that and I do not like piano roll, I prefer notation and step sequencer. The easiest way is to use a softsynth that supports mono/legato mode, and a fixed portamento time. In something like Rapture, you reduce the Polyphony control from a default 16 voices down to 0. The Portamento control becomes active, and you dial in the portamento time from 0.0 - 10.0 seconds. In the Step Sequencer, flip the Mono / Poly mode switch to Mono, and create your base pattern. Flip the switch to Poly, and add additional notes where you want the glides. By overlapping before or after the target note, you can change the direction of the glide. In Rapture, "layers' are key. If the amplitude envelope is still decaying, it counts as an overlapped note (as far as portamento is concerned). The X2 step sequencer with glide support would be perfect. This can get a little tricky. It's going to need some pre-planning, depend heavily on the softsynth, and will probably require some additional configuration. The SS2 dropdown lists CC:5 Slide / Portamento. That's a Portamento Time variable, and not too "TB-303-ish". CC: 65 is Portamento On/Off, and you may also see (rarely) CC:68 Legato Footswitch, or (even more rarely) CC:84 Portamento Control. Effectively, this CC contains a third byte 'source' note number; gliding to the next note number received; at the rate specified in CC:5. So, it's back to how "XYZ" synth responds to CC messages generated by the Step Sequencer.

The symbols in Sonar's score editor do not create the function they represent. They are purely visual enhancements.

Hi, here it is more clear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWnK7LWOvkU
I hear it now. For something like that, I use pitch bends. I programmed a similar sound into a KARMA module for a song titled "Voyage of Light". Its on my SoundCloud account in my sig below. http://m.soundcloud.com/js516kIf portamento is not working for you, try pitch bends. Just remember to set the pitch bend range to at least a fifth away (I usually just set it to an octave) to get a more dramatic movement.
