Customize toolbar a la 8.5?

Hey folks. I upgraded from 8.5 to X2 recently (because of a shared project) and now I'm missing a couple buttons on the control bar. Not a Big Deal, I thought, I'll just add them with the Customize Toolbar... No I won't.

Is there a way to customize the Control Bar or add a "user module" or "custom module" or customize the Modules? Hand-editting .ini files is fine by me.

Customizable toolbars were removed from the X series. However there is a clever individual out there who brought them back in. IIRC if you goggle Sonar Mods (it is quite possible sonarmods.com) and or Duckbar it should get you to where you want to go.

Personally I don't use them but many here on the forum swear by them. Check em out. Hope it works out for you.

I don't use them either, I'm committing more & more keyboard shortcuts to memory, and I also have a laminated copy of all the default shortcuts laid out in spreadsheet format on a single double sided sheet of A4.

You have to create a reg file. If you're not sure what you're doing with the registry - don't do this.

Here's an example:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu\Audition]
"ExePath"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Audition 3.0\\Audition.exe"
"HelpFilePath"=""
"MenuText"="Adobe Audition"
"StatusBarText"="Launch Audition"
"Type"="WaveEditor"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\Tools Menu\Line 6 Edit]
"ExePath"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Line6\\Line 6 Edit\\Line 6 Edit.exe"
"HelpFilePath"=""
"MenuText"="Line 6 Edit"
"StatusBarText"="Launch Line 6 Edit"
"Type"="Generic"

Registry entries? Okay, I'm down with that. A separate executable that probably fires off OLE commands? I dunno, not so much. I want my old buttons (Save, specifically) on the Sonar tools menu.

I use the keyboard a lot, and have a control surface. But when I've been using the mouse for editing, I just want to save the project file with a click on an on-screen button with the mouse, not drop the mouse and grab another input device. What wastes time with UI's is switching between input devices, IMHO.

I'm comfortable with editing the registry. I've been administrating Windows systems for a long time. Now to poke around in existing entries to see whether I can add what I want. Thanks John Braner!

jbraner's registry examples add 3rd party tools to the utilities menu not buttons to UI. The only thing I know of that adds buttons to the X2 UI is Duckbar, downloadable from sonarmods.com (register to login and download). Duckbar adds a toolbar to SONAR.

sorry timbraun - scook is right - this just adds entries to the utilities menu. I thought that is what you were looking for :-\
You would make a txt file in the format above, and save it as a .reg file. Then just click on it and it gets added to the registry. Nothing sophisticated like OLE ;-)

You're looking for the old Sonarutils (which doesn't work on X2) - or duckbar as scook says...

You can't do that anymore.  But honestly, I had the same gripe you did.  But the new control bar, I think, looks a lot cleaner, easier on the eyes due to size and if you keybind your most used commands, that's the fastest way to work.

Oh. It's the Tools Menu. No, that's not what I wanted. Keybinding it is. The File Open / New items are already bound. Time to bind good ol' Ctl-S.

Still wonder why they took the file buttons off the control bar. Default them off, but allow us to turn them on, please.

Time for some music.
