Too violent for me
Watched "Looper" last night and was not impressed by the violence. We almost had to change the channel. It's almost like films are trying to compete with cell phone filmed atrocities or replicating them even- "Savages" with South African necklacing eg. I seem to have a real problem accepting deliberate cruelty.

Most people accept sadism in their movies just fine. Things like Saw make alot of money. Probably I'm being sexist saying it but I'm always surprised when girls like that kind of stuff. Growing up I thought they would have an attack of the vapors or something if exposed to extreme cruelty. Not so! This movie Looper is rated R in NZ- which I think is 15 years or older. Blue Velvet was R18 I think and about a tenth as horrible.

To be honest, I found the "violence" in Saw to be very appropriate and an interesting look into human behavior. That can't be said for the 100's of other movies where Hollywood must think that the first option available in any situation is violence.

Why didn't you change the channel? Lot of things that others may enjoy that I don't. What others, outside of my family, feel or think about such things isn't much concern to me. It is somewhat strange to me that you'll spend time watching something that is unfavorable to you and yours rather than change the channel.

We watched John Ford's StageCoach the other week. We were amazed to be reminded that actors used to act... and that some of them were very, very good at it. Now, that's a movie. ;-)

I agree with you about Looper. I stayed with it, against my better judgement, hoping that the story would develop. In the end, it didn't. There was no character development, no internal consistency, and no point in having Bruce Willis in this movie. I know. You're completely shocked. "Bubba has some better judgement?" I do. I keep it in a jar next to the Good Intentions.

I really like John Ford's movies and other films from that era--particularly some by Mervyn LeRoy like Mr. Roberts and No Time For Sergeants. Two military movies without violence. Nor am I a fan of the Saw franchise. The first one was unique and original--but how many sequels do we need to tell that story over and over again. I liked Looper. There were one or to points where the violence was over-the-top, but I think a lot of it was required by the story and not so gory that it was a problem for me. The plot was very inventive for the time-travel genre and the acting was pretty good. They also did a good job of making Joseph Gordon-Levitt look like a younger Bruce Willis.

Has anyone noticed how annoying and distracting 3-D can be in some films (Green Hornet--not Spacey's picks) and how great it can be in other films (Prometheus)? Have you seen any films where 3-D was good, bad or meh?

Nice list, Spacey. I've only seen a few 3-D's so far. Prometheus was well-worth the Imax 3-D treatment. The effect was used properly during the storm and the "atlas" scenes. In Green Hornet, the 3-D stuff actually distracted from the movie. In one scene, Green Hornet and his side-kick were talking about their predicament but I kept wanting to look at some shards of broken glass rolling around on the other side of the screen. I missed most of the conversation. GH was fun, but not a great movie with or without the 3-D. A friend saw the new Star Trek and said it was a very good film, but the 3-D didn't add anything to the experience. It wasn't bad like GH, but probably not worth the extra expense over the 2-D version. I haven't had a chance to see it yet.

The only 3d I've watched is on my system. All Blu-ray and I can say that nobody in my family has had anything negative to say about it. I can't think of one of them that isn't totally 3d. The credits are even 3d. I've had credits roll seemingly into the room and vanish in a puff of smoke over the coffee table. I've pre-ordered Star-Trek and it comes with a phaser! Look out!

The Saw and Hostel movies were groundbreaking - but not in a pleasant way. Interesting concept and all too graphic. Of course there is no need for a remake - tho Hostel 2 was "better" than 1. Yea, I get all the cable channels. Looper was one of those concept movies that didn't quite pan out. It is really kinda funny. Love Peckinpaw. Graphic but pointed. Many movies now are just graphic. It seems to sell. It reminds me of an arguement about the diff between Folsum Prison by Cash and M&Ms momma song. 'I know I can't be free" vs whatever point M&M was making, I guess satisfaction. On the other hand, doesn't John Wayne say " Mighty white of ya" in Stagecoach, or is it the Searchers? Couldn't get away w/ that these days. That may be progress, but you couldn't remake Blazing Saddles either. @

There was a lot of gratuitous violence in the Final Destination movies too, but those are different. I thought they did a good job of making you think someone was going to die one way then doing it from an unsuspecting angle. On a different note, I remember watching Burn After Reading which, supposedly had this "all-star" cast including Pitt and Clooney. Almost every other word was an unnecessary expletive with tons of blatant sexual references. It was if they were trying to set a record for putting as much class-less crap into a movie as they could. I don't think I even finished watching. Evidentally Hollywood has decided that it's cheaper to produce a winning movie stuffed full of drugs, sex, language and violence (the 'ol DSLV you typically see now-a-days next to the "R" rating of most flicks) than it is to invest in an actual plot with decent acting.
