Hello
Hi guys, I'm new in everyway both to this Forum and to Sonar X1 Essential. I've been using Qbase for really a long time and Sonar presented few issues to me that i can't find a solution anywhere to my particular problem. Here's the issue: 1) I have the Midi file imported and I could: change sounds, mute instruments, change the Metronome into a different sound, and whatnot. All cool and fine till this point. 2) Evertyhing seems to work fine untill I get to the stage of saving the file, from the actual midi into an audio or an MP3. It won't just allow me to do that in the tab where it says: Export: Midi, Audio etc etc. It just let me save it as a "track template" but I don't want that although I did "highlighted" and put the markers on the top bar and got all those tracks "highlighted" as mentioned, in "Black". Now I'm pretty sure that everything is set up correctly, otherwise it won't play the sounds on my pc as far as the internal sound software (I'm not using an external Keyboard or midi stuff). One thing though i did notice is that if i go in the Midi Set up Inputs tab, there is no actual Instrument shown in there, like Microsoft GS Wavetable syth. It is shown in the Outputs though the internal softsynth. Would that be probably the issue? I don't have a clue guys so please any help will be vital for me that I'm working as a teacher (drum-teacher) in an Academy and I need those Audio or MP3 converted files to let my students to ass drums on the cuts. OK Thank you in advance, and may God bless you all. Regards Ermz :-)

You need to assign the MIDI to softsynth(s) in order to export audio from SONAR. Tutorial #4 goes through the process of working with MIDI.

Sorry, I'm being a bit slow this morning, and am struggling to follow what is happening here. There are several queries I have about audio interfaces and assigning synths/GS Wavetable, but lets cut to the chase. The project is sounding fine when you press play, yes? Then we should be able to export it as audio. Try this: -Click on any track in the track view and then press cntrl+a on your computer keyboard. This should select all the tracks. -Go to top left of Sonar window, and choose "File-Export-Audio. A window should open. -Navigate to where you want to save the file in the "LookIn" box at the top. -Make sure "Entire Mix", "What You Hear" or somesuch is chosen in the Source Category. -Bit depth should be 16. -File type should be "Wave", unless you have separately purchased the Cakewalk MP3 encoder, in which case you can choose MP3. -Press "Export. Please post back with the results. Hope that helps.

Hello guys and thanks for the quick reply and help, you are really kind, thanks. OK let me explain a bit better what is happening to my stuff here: 1) First I have a Sonar X1 Essential Software installed on my pc. Before i've always used the basic and old version of Qbase, that was the best because I just simply used to press in there "Save as arrangement" on the saving tab, and it would export the whole thing without gettin into much trouble or split my brain into pieces to understand how this thing works. Sigh! 2) I don't use an extenal intrument (Such as Keyboards, Vocals, Guitars, Electronic Drums ....etc etc) but i use the inbuild sound card of my pc: Microsoft GS Wavetablesynth.....a bit average but does the job for what i have to do with this thing and for the school. 3) I actually don't have to create or record anything with Sonar X1, because i use a bunch of midiflies and so, I just run them and mute their drums and change a bit a little sound here and there, so with that I'm fine. The issue is when i have to: Export, Save the song (midifile) that I've changed and i want to put that into another device such as MP3 player, or another laptop I have. It just won't save/export, in the format which is usable in Sonar when we go in the Tab at the top where it says: File>Save as...> or Export. It just doesn't allow me to get in there as if the line is not highlighted....(usually is black the writing meaning that I can access in that function) mine is just blank-white and it won't allow me to do that. I've tried what you have suggested me and even watched some other tutorials in Utube but it won't let me do it. 5) I have a doubt though because if I press "P" and i go in the "Preference>Devices Tab and into the Midi Inputs, in there, there are no Instruments of the box that concerns the Microsfot GS Wavetablesynth. I have that in the Outputs though, but not in the Inputs. Would it be that the problem? It is so odd, because having everything in there ready (also because i can hear the sounds of the instruments while playing the midi) but when i highlight the tracks and i go into "Export" or "Save as Audio"....Baaaaang the only thing it allows me to do is just, into the "Export section": Track Template, but I don't want that. I really hope that this didn't confuse you guys and I hope I did explain well enough to make you understand. Anyways thank you for your help and i hope that you were able to understand. Thank you and God Bless you Ermezio :-) PS Now i go to bed because in Australia is late but don't worry take your time to answer or help me when you can and you will have time. Cheers Ermz :-)

Hi Ermezio, you will need to create an audio track and record the output of your Microsoft Wavetable synth to it. Then you can export that audio file to mp3 etc.

It almost sounds like you have a Save/Export disabled version; i.e., a demo. If that's not the case, I'd imagine the problem is related to the GS Wavetable synth, something I've never used myself. I can see the export options possibly being changed by the setup of this, but I don't know why that would affect the File > Save As command. What format (file extension) did you choose when performing the Save As?

Ok guys thanks again for your: time, help and tips. Well at least now in these past few hours, I've come up with a little progress. Please read what follows below: 1) I've finally found out how to export the Midi File with the changed: Sounds, different click, no drums and whatnot. I went into the: File> "Save as...." and then another window opens up telling me which format I would like to save that midi file. As you all know, it gives us when you open that window these options: 1) "File name"; and then other options just below that: "Save as type": 1) Normal, 2) Template, 3) Cakewalk bundle, 4) Midi format 0, 5) Midi format 1, 6) RIFF Midi Format 1, 7) RIFF Midi Format 2. I guess we are kinda getting there, however when i save that File into Midi, it does save it in midi but, the sound and all the stuff in it, once saved and played, it goes back to the original format, as if i didn't touched the midi song at all. Basically it didn't change anything. Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.....what the hell man.......Luckly i don't have the booze tonight, otherwise i would been drunk already by now. Anyways, sorry about this but, I really hope this is clear enough. It's hard to write down these things because i always miss bits and pieces here and there, I'm totally new to this Sonar X1 which indeed is a fantastic software but, not knwoing this system very well, it causes me to go out there in the bottle shop and get some booze to relax me a bit ;-). OK now to answer to: 1) Shambler: I probably should try that too and eventually i will tomorrow, I didn't do it yet because I would like to get to the bottom of this through the normal process; it just drives me crazy the fact that i can't save that damn file with the normal way of saving it, but thanks for the tip. In the worst case scenario i will go with your tip for sure. 2) Stevec: OK my version is the one that I've bought and not the demo version. 3) To Mike; I have a program that can convert Audio into MP3....uhmmmm, not too sure if it will conver a midi file into the mentioned formats, but once I will be able to save in midi or audio the arrangement that i want, i will deal with it at that point. OK Guys thank you again and if you have any idea I thank you in advance. I think that to get to the bottom of this, probably it will be in that window where it says: "Save as type": 1) Normal, 2) Template, 3) Cakewalk bundle, 4) Midi format 0, 5)Midi format 1, 6) RIFF Midi Format 1, 7) RIFF Midi Format 2. and try all the situations in there. God bless you all and thanks again. Ermezio :-)

OK, I think I finally read enough to figure out what's up. You are using the Microsoft Wavetable synth? SONAR thinks that synth (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) is an external synth.,, so that is why you can't render with it within SONAR. I suggest that you familiarize yourself with one of the "soft synths" that came with your SONAR package. Then you'll need to learn how to set it up and use it within SONAR as an "virtual instrument". Once you have a virtual instrument running and making sound on playback you will find that you actually have some sound which you can Export from SONAR. You had mentioned .mp3. After you get the audio export working you can decide if you want to do the .mp3 encoding with that second app you mentioned or if you want to get set up to do it straight out of SONAR as you seemed to describe doing with Qbase. I think once you get a virtual instrument going you will find it seems like a more familiar process. Good luck. best regards, mike

You really don't want to use the Microsoft Wave table synth. First it sounds awful. And it means you are probably using MME as your audio driver. You will probably need a pro quality sound card. You can get one for around $100. You need to load a soft synth such as the TTS-1 into your project and then output your MIDI tracks to it. Do the tutorial as suggested above and it will step you through how to do this. Welcome to the forum. P.S. Mike's comment should be taken in the light that he doesn't own X2 and the comment offers nothing for you to use.

John, You silly old fool... the OP asked about X1. I have X1 and X1 Expanded licenses. You should drop your tunnel vision baggage and try being a person sometime. BTW, credit where credit is due... It seems as if scook provided the same answer about virtual instruments in post #2. best regards, mike

Try this:- -Watch the video called "Inserting SoftSynths" on the Cakewalk website - http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/SONARU.aspx/Get-Started -Insert the Cakewalk TTS-1 synth. Don't choose "Simple Instrument Track", choose First Synth Audio Output". -Go through each MIDI track an choose "TTS-1" in each track's "Output To" tabs. -Play the song from the beginning. If it sounds okay, try the steps I outlined above to export it. There are better ways to do this, but I felt this was the easiest option for now. Scook's suggestion to run through the tutorial is a good one. Post back if you have any luck. As for Mike - his posts on this forum are not normally intended to be helpful, but instead to make repeated snide digs at Cakewalk and the X series. I think it was time he moved on. It is a pity, as apart from this childish vendetta, I sure he has a lot that he could contribute to this forum. I believe constantly bad mouthing Cakewalk, and insulting other members, as he did John here, are against the TOS.

I'm fully aware of what the OP was asking about. Whether its X1 or X2 its still the same answer. I am also aware that you hate X1 and because of that will not upgrade to X2. Thus your unsolicited comment. Further you answer a new member's first thread with another bash on Sonar. Don't you think its time to stop or move on?

Another twisted thread... Mike probably nailed the answer by stating how SONAR handles the GS Wavetable synth. That's good information IMO. But apparently he couldn't do so without first making the requisite dig at CW as JB and John mentioned. It is a shame as Mike's had a number of useful posts in the (classic) past.

Color me wrong ,but, I get the impression that the OP is saying that the changes that they are making to a midi file created by someone else, that they are then trying to make edits to, then save those edits. The edits that the OP is making are then not being saved to said midi file. Not using midi much is there something that the original creator of the file could have done that stops others from making changes to a file that they created? Could this be the problem?

No. its all in how you save the project. If you import a MIDI file it will take on the project setup and will save that setup as a normal file. If you open it as a native file then it will set the project to it. When it comes time to save it is also important to note that a loaded MIDI file will default to MIDI when you save the project. You need to save the project as a CWP file in order to keep all the settings. There is no copy protection for MIDI files that I know of.

Hi guys, thanks again for your help and interest about my case and sorry for the late reply but i just woke up. I guess you all come from US and I come from Australia (actually originally I'm from Italy (Bologna), so the times are a bit messed up. Now call me a "Mongoloid" a "newbie" an idiot will do too, but i can't get the rig to work out either with assigning: TTS-1, exporting whatnot, or even saving simply a different arrangement in midi, if I do so, it goes back to the original arrangement. I've tried every step everyone here in this post have suggested me but it just doesn't work. Now in reply to "jb101", I did assign the Cakewalks to each one of the tracks (as you have suggested me, even watched the videos) but it won't just play any sound and if i go in the tab of "midi devices", it still shows the Microsoft Wavetable synth assigned to the "Outputs". Now probably I didn't set up correctly when i've installed the S.X1. really guys i don't know. I have a basic system I know, but the more sophisticated you get the more complex it gets. For what I have to do with it it's fine even if the sounds doesn't sound as Toto/Quincy Jones kinda of type. I'm not a producer or composer, I'm just a session player and drum teacher that's all. Sonar x1 is a great program but really complex to get it to work,......well at least for me. Probably having worked for a long time with Qbase, I've got used to that one many years ago and with this one I get lost. Besides all your really helpful tips, I think i will try to get the "Shambler"'s tip. The thing is that i don't know or i can't remember (LOL), is how to create an audio track and record the output of my Microsoft Wavetable synth to it. Last night, (......actually this morning...damn with this Sonar X1 issues last night I've slept 3 hours), I've tried already Shambler's tip last night but with even that advice, suddenly I've got stucked in a section while performing the steps, therefore, even this option might seems hard to get into reality, but the easier one for the moment. I just need to remember how to assign the tracks to that outputs. By the way I think for now, before I will get around S.X1, is the fastest and easier solution for my problem at the moment. I need to solve this quickly because on the week ends i work at the Drum-Academy, and i need these damn files to let the students to play on top of it. Then when I will solve this, and knowing a little better this S.X1, I will adventure myself in exploring different features of this software trying to experiment the steps you all so kindly advice me to do. It's a long time that i don't use these Music Software programs and of course I have to start to get back into it again and I suck at it because i've forgot the vibe and the confidence about how to get it to work. OK guys thanks again and if you have anymore suggestion (The easy ones) just take your time and please let me know. God bless you all and really thanks to you all again. Over and out Mr. Ermezio :-)

1. As has already been suggested, ignore the Microsoft synth. Even better go into preferences and untick it in the list of MIDI devices. If you want the kind of "general MIDI" sounds that the MS synth provides the TTS software synth included in Sonar does the job much better and will also be easier to work with once you understand how Sonar does things. While you're in preferences click the "Advanced" button at the bottom and go to the Playback and Recording tab. Near the bottom is "Playback". Where it says "Prepare using xxx Millisecond buffers" if xxx is less than 500 set it to 500 (the default is 250 which is too low for reliable operation for lots of people). 2. Open Sonar's help and run through tutorials 1 and 4. These walk you though opening and closing projects and setting up new ones and using software synths in Sonar. 3. If you want to use a pre-existing MIDI file then the best way is to set up a new project. Then insert a TTS software synth. In the dialogue that pops up tell it you do not want a simple instrument track but a MIDI source track and the first synth audio output. That will create an audio track and a MIDI track. The MIDI track's output should point at the TTS (check to be on the safe side). The audio track will receive the output (audio) of the TTS. Import or drag your MIDI file into the MIDI track. Assuming there's nothing odd going on in the original MIDI file (which can happen) that should basically work. You may need to set up the TTS to get the right instruents for the MIDI track but even if the sounds don't match you should at least get sound. Once things work then if you mute the drum outputs in the TTS then export the audio to a wav file that should so the trick. From your description, I'm not sure what your MIDI saving problem is exactly. If you edit the MIDI data in the piano roll or using one of the other methods Sonar provides then those MIDI edits will be saved if you save the project as a "Cakewalk project" (.cwp). I've used Sonar for years and never seen this fail. If you want to use the raw MIDI in other software then you need to export the edited MIDI. At this point I will run the risk of insulting your intelligence by reminding you that MIDI and audio are not the same thing - you doubtless already know that, but I always say this because it's surprising how often people forget or simply don't know. MIDI is instructions that tell a synth what to do and that's is. There's no sound in MIDI. To export the edited MIDI you can either use the export function in the file menu or simply drag the clips to the desktop or anywhere else. If all you want to do is mute the drums I suggest it's not even worth editing the MIDI itself - just mute the drums in whichever synth you're using to turn the MIDI into audio then export the audio. Far simpler. If you do edit the MIDI I suggest using the "bounce to clips" function before exporting it to make sure the edits "take" and the clips are trimmed properly etc. Or even bouncing the edited clips to a new track first. MIDI outputs. Sonar when it launches looks for any external MIDI inputs and outputs it can find attached to your PC - hardware interfaces or the MIDI ins and outs presented by other software on the PC. As far as Sonar is concerned the MS synth's MIDI inputs are external synth/device because that synth is not part of Sonar or running in Sonar. If you had e.g. a MIDI interface to connect hardware synths then that would show up under MIDI devices. Software synths (VSTis) that you load into Sonar do not show up there. "MIDI devices" in Preferences is only concerned with outside Sonar. Software synths loaded into Sonar show up in the output box pull-downs for MIDI tracks within Sonar, as do the MIDI devices as well. I hope that helps. If it doesn't make sense or answer your problems then that's my fault not yours so please say so. Apologies for any typos - I've a new PC keyboard and it's quite different to the old one. It's a bit like someone took my oldest and most-played guitar, changed the neck length, moved the frets around random amounts, switched round the volume and tone pots and moved the selector switch. It's all there, but not quite how or where I expect :-/.

Thank you so much for this long list of things i will for sure go through. I will be back later on "tlw" and i will tell you how it went. I can't do it now because i have to go into town but, really thank you all guys for the important help, your time and your effort to explain to me how i can get out from this situation to finally get it to work. Also a message for "jb101": jb......unfortunately I've tried to get a private email/message to you, however the forum here, it won't allow me to do that because I'm a new member and i have to write before getting that function to work and unblock a certain number of posts. You are really kind and you can write to me in the private messages your email, because when you write here the private message, it goes automatically in my private email anyway. Recently i did work with a band from UK, I just played on their album but is just a studio project not a live one....pity because the band is really good. Anyways we will write to each other in the private email. I have Skype too if you have that we can even talk in there. Also one of my favorite UK drummers is Gerry Conway (amongst many others), have you ever heard of him? He played in one of my favorite albums of Jethro Tull called: The Broadsword and the Beast. (1983). :-) God bless you all and thank you again. Ermezio :-)

this is a real easy dumbed down way to learn midi im sonar (no offence to the dumbed down part) it can sometimes be confusing for new users and its really easy. theres 3 basic ways to use midi in sonar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juIu9Rlt6v8 this is called basic midi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k83UVo1OiKA the site has videos as well I just find those a little robotic. its really easy when it comes down to it. good luck.

Isn't it Cubase not Qbase? The only way the MS GS Wavetable synth will work is in MME mode. You won't get very good results with it though.

Hello out there, hope you are all well and happy. I'm still going through the suggestions that Mr. Twl with patient and care, wrote for me to get the rig going. I've tried what he wrote, I've missed the Tutorials though because tonight I came back home really late from the Academy so, i couldn't really experiment all the tutorial points (Steps 1-4). However i did try to assign the TTS-1 instead of the "Microsoft ...bla', bla' bla' synth", the bad one I have in my sound card; I did import the midi into the midi track (.....yes I know the difference between midi and audio, but Twl, don't worry about telling me these things, I'm not a guy that gets offended if i need help and in general in life....otherwise i would be stupid....inin't?....Life's too short! :-) Anyways with my great surprise, I saw popping up in that little midi track, all the littles tracks, presenting in all it's beauty the midi file of (Change the world by Eric Clapton....actually a very nice midi file with nice sounds and....believe it or not, even perfectly spot on timing wise with all the instruments in synch. Usually as you all know, midi files are so bad like if they are programmed by me when i'm drunk....(on Sundays usually); anyway, back to the electronic rig: I could even see the little leds moving up and down around in the mixer, after i did go into the Midi Device Tab and excluded the Microsoft one. I've applied the whole thing, but to my surprise even though the little lights were flashing, i couldn't hear a damn thing. I said to myself: What the hell, .....I was close, I could even be half way through to solve this mistery but for some reason, probably for my "Mongoloidness with this Sonar X1" I couldn't get it to work. One point in favour is that at least, something is playing, because i can see the leds moving but no sound in my headset. Don't worry though, I have to check the tutorials and that's something I will do tomorrow when i will be back from the Academy. I won't check it on Sunday though, because from 4:00 pm onwards, after work, i will be on the moon for some nice booze that awaits for me on that particular day so, in those circumstances, it's not advisable to stay close to: Sonar X1, PC, electronic devices, Facebooks or any device that requires attention and concentration, I think you can agree with me. OK I will have tomorrow another shot at it. Probably, i did make some mistakes somewhere about assigning this or that: Who knows? But i have to get on top of this. Today I was at school checking on your Forum comments and tips, I truly see a lot of help from you guys and this makes me happy, really thank you all. OK now I'm off to bed and i will talk to you soon, as soon as i will have more positive attempts to the electronic devices. You all take care and God bless you all. Over and out from Mr. Ermezio.

Just to jump in , I work with pre made MIDI files so will offer a few tips. First off you need to "open" the MIDI file or you will loose certain data that is embedded in the original file. If you "import" it into Sonar it will be overlayed with different data used by the project template , like tempo and tempo maps will be gone. Then you insert TTS-1 to the new project. At this point you can use CNTL A to highlight all the tracks. Now this is in 8.5 so might be a little different but you can globally assign all tracks to the TTS-1 by going to - Tracks/ Output/ MIDI/ TTS-1 accsess to this menu may have changed. Don't worry about your MIDI in and out assignments, it's got nothing to do with playing a soft synth unless you input from an external keyboard. You sound like you have not set your audio properly. If you using an on board sound card then set your drivers to MME and go to audio options and make sure the sound card is selected. Then make sure the output of the TTS-1 is pointed there. I normally insert a Master buss and assign it to the audio device. Then the TTS-1 is output to the Master instead. After you edit you file and like the way it sounds you will have to use select all or select none and go to Export Audio Change the format to what you want and put it where you want and that's it. You should have a audio file of what your heard in sonar.

Hi out there, hope you are fine and happy. Now i went to follow basically bits and pieces out from everyone tips. Mr. Cactus gave other useful hints but, this morning before going to teach, I went through it and it seems that the machine reads something with the TTS but it doesn't yet plays through my headset any sound. Really @ this stage, i must have done something wrong assigning outputs and whatnot but it doesn't play the sounds with the Softsynth. Indeed I've excluded the Microsoft etc etc, also i went into the tabs for the outputs, assigning the outputs to each track, then changed the ASIO and the MME but still no sounds. I think i need probably to find someone here in Melbourne which has the same program and then he/she (better if is a "she") can come to my place and set it up with me. There is something that i must have done wrong and I'm sure it's just a stupid thing that, once solved it will make the rig work. I will keep you all posted anyways and if you have any easier step for me to do, please write to me. OK guys, thanks again and God may bless you all. Over and out Mr. Ermezio
