No Fantom Soft Synth

I recenty upgraded to Windows 7 and Sonar X2a.  It has been taking a bit to get going did not come equipped with a pocket protector.  It appears, I successfully downloaded the correct driver for the VS-700 as things are working.  I just got started with it so it is still a little early to be emphatic.  I opened an X1 Tutorial and it played nicely through the system.  I didn't do much with it except use the start/stop and some other buttons on the VS-700 Console.

I opened a new project and was able to record some audio on it.  That was good.  I also was able to record a bit on a MIDI track.  That also, was good.

Now, I want to use the Fantom.  So, I got to Insert > Soft Synth and the Fantom does not appear.  I have the Fantom checked on my MIDI devices.  So, I was wondering if there was a special driver for Windows 7 which will enable X2 to see and access the Fantom.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

64 bit or 32 bit windows 7 and Sonar ? Make sure you have the correct ports selected in the Fantom Editor Midi setup. The Fantom behaves differently in 64 bit. For me, minimizing the Editor and then maximizing it again loses the sound until you click on the Sonar Icon in the task bar in 64 bit Sonar and windows.

    I've got 64 bit.

"Make sure you have the correct ports selected in the Fantom Editor Midi setup."

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get to the Fantom Editor Midi setup.

My hardware is hooked up exactly the same way it was hooked up when I had Sonar 8.5 and X1.  For some reason, there isn't a recognition of the existence of the Fantom.  As I was trying to say, in a project and when I try to insert the Fantom as a soft synth, it doesn't even show in the drop down menu.  It shows Cakewalk TTS, Cyclone, Pentagon and others but no Fantom as it did in 8.5 and X1.

Did you install the special Fantom installer file? http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/2007013246 If not do so. Make sure you have the correct updates.

Thanks Craig.  I did the download the Fantom VS Editor & ARX Editor Installer from the link you provided.

It appears to have worked.  Now, I've got Fantom VS (32-Bit) in the drop down menu for soft synths.  If I understand correctly, the 32 bit will work though I've got the 64 bit.

    Thanks again.

I was able to insert the Fantom as a soft synth.  In my experiment, I inserted it as a simple instrument track.  Now, for the life of me, I cannot find the Fantom Editor.  The only window I have is the main window when I opened this test project.  I've got a track which says Fantom VS1 and it shows in the Console View, too.

Disregard the previous post.  I found it.  There is a little window on the upper right corner which has three tabs:  Media, Plugins, and Synth.  Under Synth, the Fantom VS1 was there and I clicked on it and the Editor appeared.

    Still not there.

I've got a brief track with some chords I played on my MIDI controller.  However, I am not getting any audio from the Fantom.

I've got the input as Fantom VS MIDI Omni and the output is on Master.

In the Editor, for Set Up MIDI Devices, the Fantom VS Input is Fantom VS as well as the output.

Just as an experiment, I inserted the Cakewalk TTS soft synth (simple instrument track) and copied the previous MIDI track.  It works for the TTS.  I am getting the audio.  Just can't figure out how to get the audio in the Fantom.  There isn't any activity in the VU meters, either.

Still haven't found a solution as to why I can't get the audio on my Fantom track.  I wrote Roland earlier today and hopefully, I'll get some sort of solution tomorrow.

In the Editor, for Set Up MIDI Devices, the Fantom VS Input is Fantom VS as well as the output.

The input on your Fantom track should be your keyboard controller not the Fantom VS Midi Omni. How are you getting the keyboard controller into the DAW?  Try inserting 16 Midi tracks, one for each channel of the Fantom. Put the keyboard controller channel in the inputs of those tracks, and the outputs to the Fantom VS 1 listed in the output drop down menu. Make sure you enable input echo. It sounds like you have the inputs improperly routed. On the synth track choose none in the input. Always put channel 10 to channel 10 for drums. Go back through your midi devices and your setup, you're missing something. In midi setup in the editor, Fantom VS ( VS700) should be in all four boxes.

I sometimes use the MIDI controller merely to write the data on the piano roll on the Fantom soft synth track.  Other times, I just write the data directly onto the piano roll.  Either way, the MIDI data there.  When I play it, the VU meters respond to the signal but the audio is not coming through any audio track.  Yes, Fantom VS (VS700) is in all four of the boxes and input echo is on.

In my limited experience with prior Sonar versions (8.5 and X1), I was able to do this.

Just FYI, I called Cakewalk and was able to get this Fantom audio issue resolved.  Dean, the patient and courteous support person, spent a lot of time on the phone with me as we tried a host of different options.  The bottom line is, there was a registry issue.  There were some files missing which caused the problems.  The registry issue was rectified and now I have the audio on my Fantom track.    I am a happy camper.

I hate when that happens. Glad they rooted it out for you. Was it an installation or X2 issue?

Sorry, I don't know.  Could be an installation considering all that had to be done to get Windows 7, the drivers, the updates and etc.

I'm sorry I didn't think of this sooner, but I actually went through exactly the same thing with my installation.  Nobody seemed to know what caused it, but the solution was a quick registry tweak (via file downloaded from Cake).  Here's the post:  http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2549068

Congrats on getting the fix.  Hopefully you're all up and running now?

Well now I have the synth working in my vstudio system. :-)
Sounds pretty good too considering...  but my  Integra 7 is still my main one.

For those who are doing the regedit bit....  it needs to be saved as binary.
