Keeping moved or copied MIDI data within the same clip
I am having a problem understanding why MIDI data behaves the way it does in SONAR.
When programming drums, my usual method involves finding a suitable pattern in Ezdrummer, placing it on the MIDI/synth track routed to Ezdrummer, and then editing it in the piano roll view. This usually involves moving or copying small groups of (or just individual) drum beats within the pattern.
What l don’t get is why this results in a new ‘block’ of data (clip?) being added to the synth track as a separate entity; a pattern which had previously appeared as a single entity is now overlaid with a new, smaller block corresponding to the moved or copied data. From that point on, in order to copy all the data in an edited pattern to another location in the song it seems to be necessary to multi-select all the blocks which now comprise that pattern.
I know that selected MIDI data can be combined into a single entity using the ‘Bounce to clips’ option, but as a result of editing drum patterns in the manner I’ve described, I often seem to end up with blocks which I can’t select (i.e. <Ctrl>+click doesn't highlight them to indicate that they've been added to the selection).
I’ve tried changing the settings under Preferences > Project > Record, but neither specifying ‘Store Takes in a Single Track’ nor unchecking the ‘Create New Layer on Overlap’ box seem to have any effect. I guess that what I'm asking is this: is there a way of setting MIDI/synth track properties such that new data added to an existing MIDI clip is treated as part of that clip, rather than as a separate entity occupying the same space? Or is using the ‘Bounce to clips’ option after each and every change the only solution?
