New forum - how can we make it denser?

Even with "Essentials" selected, the new forum seems a lot less dense than the old one.  How can we reduce the row heights so that we can see more posts without scrolling?

This reminds me of similar changes they made from Sonar 8.5.3 to X1; it become more "slick" but less dense.  Even as of X2, I find myself missing the simplicity of 8.5.3, just like I find myself missing the simplicity of the old forum.

Just adjust the zoom in your browser, usually CTRL and +/-

We had three different themes for the last version - 'Classic', 'Blue-Cake' and 'Robocake'.

Because it suited my eyesight, I used 'Robocake' in preference to the other two as it was much more spaced out and easier for me to read. This current version is ideal for me, but I can't see why they couldn't offer other templates which might offer a more compressed view.

Why not PM Ryan or Andrew, they seem to be the only Cakewalkers who frequent these forums.

I've heard the dev is working on another theme for future updates but I have no idea what he has in mind. I'm not completely opposed to making some updates in the future but, believe it or not, it's a LOT of work. There is a LOT of customization involved and it's not a simple task. At the moment, there are a few other projects that must take priority.

Sorry folks, we are in the millennium. The millennium is the era of making senseless changes. I call it the lesser better with busier interfaces, less intuitiveness on just about all aspects of life. If you could get there in 1 click in Win XP it takes 2 to 3 in windows 7 and almost zero intuitiveness on "where is it at" on my old flip phone I could call a contact with 1 click on a hard button; now with my smart "dumb" phone, it takes 4 to 5 clicks on the soft touch buttons which I inevitably miss-press to call a contact and add on even more clicks. My new great jap-crap car stereo/gps... if I try to change a simple radio station with the piece of %$# soft touch buttons, I will crash. the old hard buttons I could feel and get a grip and press in the pitch black dark without losing site of the road. Sooo, the new rule for all the engineers to keep their job is to... make it look different, busier, a whole lot of useless functions to distract from getting from point a to point b, and almost zero intuitiveness. Then we'll call it NEW & IMPROVED. Since everything was already near perfect, this is the only way for those engineers to keep their jobs. The younger generation especially falls for the lesser better. All my 26 year old son cares about is, "but it looks really cool dad" he doesn't seem to mind the 6 extra steps to get from point a to point b on things. (of course he did rear end a car recently, hmmmm). So the only solution to this era of the lesser better is to just suck it up, and maybe the 2020's will digress back to the 1900s when things were already efficient. Then they can still call it new and improved.  btw, our new coffee pot for the office now takes 4 button pushes to brew a pot, the old one that lasted 10 years with only to 1 button push. No fear though, I'm sure this new, improved, quality item will only last about 1 year, then I can get on ebay and start looking for a 1 button push brew coffee pot.

Opera has something called "user style sheets" that can be used to override the styles of a website on a per website basis if desired.

Other browsers may (or may not) have similar functionality, but it requires an understanding of HTML/CSS and there's only so much that can be achieved.

In your User Control Panel (top right of the screen) under Additional options there are the following settings...

Speed Options

Don't show smiley faces in posts
Don't show image in posts
Don't show avatars of the posters
Don't show signature of the posters

If you check off the last two or even just the last one it will save a lot of space. You don't really need to see everyone's sigs for every post (just remember you have it turned off before yelling at OP about providing system specs... lol) and it does save quite a bit of space. However it's the avatars and the user info under them that tend to take up space on shorter posts. You figured out the Essentials thing which I think gets rid of the info but hiding the avatars save a TON of space. Unfortunately then you no longer have the visual cue that let's you know who you are talking to at a glance.

The mobile version is quite a bit more compact too but the navigation sucks.

BTW if you switch to essentials on the actual forum topic list page you will not get that little dealymabob that shows you've commented on a thread. IIRC you can have the topic list set to full while having the actual threads set to Essentials. I only played around with that briefly after the update though so maybe I was just getting confused.

What I'd like denser is the list of topics, not the actual contents of a topic.  Disabling the avatars and sigs does not save space in the topic list, and the absence of avatars makes it harder to distinguish posts.

On this laptop, I can now see 11 topics per screen.  On a standard phbbb forum, I can see 17.5 posts per screen.  This difference is huge.  Nobody likes having to scroll so much.

Sometimes I think Cakewalk's usability experts left the company long ago, and we're left with a bunch of young designers who think in terms of screen grabs rather than actual use.  What happened to the lean-and-mean Cakewalk aesthetic which placed usability over beauty?

I mean, really: What the heck happened to Cakewalk between Sonar 8.5.3 and X1?  Their whole philosophy changed, and I for one have yet to appreciate the "new" Cakewalk.  I wish some old-timers would rejoin the Cakewalk team, or at least speak up more in meetings.

Give us back our usability, Cakewalk.  Stop focusing on the f---ing screen grabs!

Well... this isn't really a Cakewalk issue. They didn't write the forum software and people were screaming for it to be updated because the old version didn't work properly. I don't think the thread topic list is THAT much bigger with the essentials option selected but check out the Style Sheets suggestion Drew made (he's smart). I think Firefox has that capability as well (might be an add on... I've never messed with that stuff).

I don't really like the direction computer stuff is taking either but that's the way it goes. The kids are eating it up and they're the target demographic for pretty much everything... especially the tech.

Oh and you could maybe try what sharke suggested with the Ctrl minus but set your browser or Windows control panel setting to display larger text. Might work. I used to have to Ctrl + the old version because the text was too small (as I do with many other sites). This one loads the text just right for my weary old peepers.

I appreciate the mobile formatting. Easier to read and post on small mobile devices is nice. Plus I'm always logged in which makes things easier.
