Anyone Familiar with Kontakt 5 Drums in X2?
Hello-- I feel like a noob again since upgrading to X2, but I'm trying to do something I haven't done before--in any version of Sonar. I'm trying to assign the different drum parts in kontakt to different channels in X2. I've watched a couple of videos on setting up kontakt channels, but when it gets to the routing to the different outputs in X2, something isn't working. Steps I've taken: - I insert the kontakt 5 (k5) player as 8 outputs in X2.
- I add more outputs in k5 - I only want the kick and the snare to have independent outputs--all the other drums parts can go to the master.
- On the kick and then the snare I assign them to one of the new mono outputs I created in k5 (the rest I leave on master)
- In X2 I have three busses for the drums. One is for the kick, one is for the snare, and one is for all the other drums, called, drums.
- On each MIDI output in X2 I route the output to the respective bus...
- ...each bus goes to the master fader, etc.
When I play the take, the level meters in k5 seem to represent I've routed k5 correctly, but in X2 all of the drums parts are playing in only one of the output "tracks" and not going to their assigned busses. Any help is very much appreciated!!

I created multi-out "templates" for all Abbey Road drum kits (60, 70, 80 and Modern). PM if you want them.

baudze That was exactly my question yesterday. All the answers you'll ever need here in this thread: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Kontakt-Sonar-X2-Multiple-outputs-m2853319.aspx
OK--it looks like the only step that I'm doing differently is inserting kontakt with the option of 8 outputs instead of creating each one separately myself. I'm not sure this is exactly my same scenario since the drums in kontakt are all considered one instrument and the same MIDI channel, but I'll give it a try. Thanks,

Btw you don't need to use a multiple output instance of Kontakt - that's for using multiple instruments in the same instance of Kontakt. The plain version lets you set up multiple outputs from the same instrument (which is what you want for drums).

I appreciate that. I'm trying again now.

*Update* Fail. I seem to get the whole configuration in kontakt (at least I think I do) but the routing in X2 is failing.

I haven't read all the various threads/advice posted so far so I don't know if anyone has posted this video, but this is what taught me how to do it in Pro Tools. The most important part is when he shows you how to set up the output channels in Kontakt (the plug itself, not the drum library you're using). To get to the output dialog, there is a button at the top of Kontakt called "Output" - is this what you're using? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n32-P9vLyXs

Yes--I've got the kontakt outputs working great. I can tell by playing a simple drum groove and seeing the kick and the snare meter show up on the outputs I created--like you reference. My challenge is getting the different drum instruments--snare, kick, etc. to play on different tracks in Sonar.

Hi razor, Let me see if I can help. So assuming you see a few outputs at the bottom of the K5 interface and you have instruments routed to them like this: You then need to "patch" that K5 output to "plugin outputs" like this by clicking the numbers below the output fader in K5: So above I've clicked the "3/4" button under the second slider. This corresponds to "Kt.st.2(1)" & "Kt.st.2(2)" in the channel output configuration and plugin output 3 and 4. Next create an audio track in Sonar and set the input to "Kt. st.2/Kt. st.2 R: Stereo" like this: And that should be it.This tells K5 to route the channel to plugin out 3&4 and then creates a Sonar track with a matching input. Good luck Dean EDIT: one more thing, you may want to head over here and download my track template for one of the K5 drummer libraries to see a full setup. I'm not sure if K5 routing will be preserved in a track template but it may be worth a shot: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2854010

A bit more explanation. Kontakt has a bunch of internal routing but here's how I think of the parts we're working with. Kontakt has K5 mixer channels and K5 plugin outputs. The mixer channels are the faders in the output section. So: K5Mixer -- 1/2 3/4 5/6 7/8 etc...
plugin outs-- 1/2 3/4 5/6 7/8 etc... Once you have an instrument/kit piece/whatever routed to a K5 mixer channel you can then route that mixer channel to whatever plugin output you want, and then use that plugin output as an input on a Sonar track. The idea is that I can take, for example, a snare drum and route it to K5mixer channel 1/2 and a kick and route it to K5mixer channel 3/4 and use the K5mixer channel fx inserts to place effects on the snare and kick separately. Once I've done that I can route those mixer channels to one/some/all plugin outputs. So I could sum those K5 mixer channels to a single plugin output (and thus one Sonar track) or have them go to separate plugin outputs (and thus separate Sonar tracks). The reason mixer channels are seperated from plugin outputs is so I can treat the K5mixer channels individually and have flexible routing from there to one or more plugin outputs. Hope that helps. Dean

Dean, thanks again for all your help so far. I was stuck in the same place, but only because I was only getting two output routing options - st 1 and st 2. I now realize that the INSTANCE of Kontakt you call up matters. My challenge now is that I am only getting 8 stereo physical outs (st 1 through st 8) from the VST option that gives me multiple outs. I know that Kontakt is able to route up to 64 outs. How do I add physical outs?

Hi baudze, Happy to help. I'm not in the studio just now so I can't check, but I think you're just looking for the "add channels" button above the Kontakt mixer panel. Of course the maximum number of outputs is determined by the K5 plugin you instatiate...so the 8 output version or the 16 output version (or the version that doesn't have an number associated with it which is 64). Er...btw, weren't you in the other thread about this? I'm not losing my mind am I? Dean

Once a an output is in the Mixer of Kontakt if you want to add more outputs without deleting the ones already there select the first Aux as the track to start with and then add the outputs. As an example: You could create 8 Stereo outputs at which point you have 8 St and 4 Aux Next you could: add 4 Mono outs by repeating the above but have the Aux 1 selected as the starting point. I'm not at my DAW right now but I think you should be able to do this based on your previous comments. Just remember: if you want to add additional outs (Stereo or Mono) without deleting the existing out use the first Aux as your starting point. Regards,

Razorwit Hi baudze, Er...btw, weren't you in the other thread about this? I'm not losing my mind am I? Dean
LOL. You're definitely NOT losing your mind. You were helping me in the other thread on the same issue. I got this far following your instructions on the other thread and had a gargantuan realization. When I installed Komplete 8, for some reason Sonar's VST scan listed all three Kontakt dll's simply as "Kontakt". I thought there was no difference between them, so I got rid of the other two. It's only now that I understand that one instance has two stereo outputs, the other has 8, and the last has 64. I would have figured the routing out immediately, had I known this sooner. Better late than never. I'll have to rescan, and maybe do some Windows Registry mucking to present clear names for the different instances. I believe my path is finally clear.
