SONAR X2a Crashes ...Completely Wipes All Trace of Project

Howdy...

After all these years ...I'm conditioned to save, save, save.
I do ...almost 100% of the time (yeh, I still forget once in a while)
Now a New problem for me...

SONAR X2a just crashed ...it wiped out two 2 files (versions) I had previously saved...
Both saved files had today's time stamp.

The original version of the project was created 3 days ago ...it survived the damage.

I had 4 vocal harmonies perfectly balanced ...several dub kicks all working in conjunction with each other sonically together to create a very nice, crunchy beat with lots of "open" space for the bass, choirs, etc...

I'd like to write a litany of all the foul things in my brain ...but that won't help.
I've seen reports of this but never yet experienced a complete wipe out like this one...

Anyone ever find "lost files" in a circumstance like this?
I did the hard disk searches...

Ouch!  What are these "files (versions)" you mentioned?  Regular "projectname.cwp" files?  Or the actual version files: "projectname.cwp.datetime"?

    When I begin a project, I'' save various versions such as <filename>.xxx v1 ...v2 ... or perhaps A, B, C and so on...
The SONAR X2a project usually winds up with at least 3 versions at varying stages of recording, mixing, etc...

In this case there were two versions saved today of the same file.
Usually ...when a version crashes ... it is not uncommon to discover it has been deleted (through what procedure I do not know)
I have always been able to go back to a previously saved version and rebuild the mix as it was when X2a crashed...

    This time ...NO

For me ...this is an unusual experience.

I'm not sure I understand your versioning process.  To clairfy: you are NOT referring to the versions Sonar automatically creates "projectname.cwp.datetime"?

From what I gather, you are manually saving multiple versions via "Save As"?  And then you change the file name after the .cwp?  e.g. mysong.cwp.ver1 or mysong.cwp.A

It does seem extremely unusual that a file that has already been written to disk would be deleted. I am sure you have checked the Windows event log for any unusual entries. While I do not believe it to be a factor is this incident you are running without write caching enabled (the default) in Preferences > Audio > Sync and Caching

    I found the "missing" files!...
    Searched in a different way...

    NOW...here's the fun part ... I just discovered a re-createable circumstance...

I was adding Boost 11 instead of using the concrete limiter... experimenting with different mixes...

    Boost 11 froze the program
Then when the program recovered ... there were instances of Boost 11 and X2a crashed.

If you can reproduce a bug you should submit it.

Well... after refining searches ...I did find the files intact.

Operator error on the deletion of files...
The addition of Boost 11 "after" the ProChannel in the Master remains something of a problem ...but all is OK since I do not use that plug much any longer in the editing / finalisation process.

    Thanks for stopping by!

I didn't think Sonar would have lost your files. Do you have autosave on?

I was confused about the whole "search" thing. If one uses per-project folders, all the files related to a project would be in one directory with very few entries and an audio directory beneath it.

Not sure I understand what happened? Best to practice having all your Cakewalk Projects stored on an external drive. Whenever you work a new project, do the same. Keep the Cakewalk project folder on your C Drive clean and organized. Have everything you own on the external drive. When you want to work on an exsisting project, just drag it's folder over to the C Drive, Cakewalk Project folder. When you save, you can save to the C drive and the external drive. This will take care of losing files? Do not drag over CWP files, rather drag over the entire folder it is in.

You can re-name folders, and organize these project folders by entering them on your hard drive. I do not recommend, going into where you see "cakewalk audio folders", and renaming them from the hard drive, This will corrupt files. It is ok to do a "save as", and re-name with the audio folder in there, but don't go into the hard drive and rename them there. Rather name them and do a save as, with the audio folder in tact. Then if you want to go in there from the hard drive, and delete 7 or 10 previous saves, you can do that, but leave the audio folder in tact, and do not rename the file using that audio folder. Practice leaving the audio folder and cwp files as is, and working renaming "folders", not cwp files from the hard drive. You can "save as" and rename all you want to from inside Sonar. But don't go there from the hard drive and rename them. I probably said that twice.

@musec03: Probably should change the title to this thread.

I think you just edit your original post. At least that's the way the old forum software worked.
