Blueberries

Blueberries growing in the forest near an old and long gone home stead.

It's been raining 2 maybe 3 times a day for 3 weeks. The berries are plump and yummy.

It's just about all the inspiration I need to go for another bike ride. :-)

    Excellent opportunity for stocking up.
For years I've consumed those anti-oxident health berries by adding them to my morning oatmeal. (and a bit of brown sugar).
IMO...they (or any other of the dark berries) should be included in the diet.
I think a tasty Merlot is good too. :)

    Happy hunting.

    Carry on....

I love those free drive/ride/walk through berry stands... Here in the NW we wait for fall and the opening of hundreds of blackberry stands. Yummy. ;-)

Yes indeed.... the berries are just starting to ripen in the back yard.

Now, if I can get them before the chickens realize they are getting ripe .....

I can attest to the power of berries. I've been scarfing berries and melons for a couple years now and I'm sure it had a big part in putting my ulcerative colitis into remission. Last month I saw the specialist and he said that the recovery was almost miraculous. He thinks it was all due to drugs but I know the berries helped. One of the few good things with this globalization, is access to fresh fruit all year.

You must try some of my purple berries.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I got a bucket and started picking the berries yesterday......I must remember to douse myself in DEET before I attempt that again.

The insects have been ok here.

The yellow flies have run their course so it's safe out in the woods again and it seems to be raining so much that the mosquitoes are insignificant. I guess it's when the water stands that the mosquitoes get a foot hold.

We've been making the most of the cooler morning and evening hours because we know the skeeters are probably about to take over.

Blueberry pie is one of my favourites..or was..
... I just recently learned that we don't have blueberries here..It's billberry we are eating.

No wonder I couldn't understand back then  how the bear in Mickey Mouse comics was hiding behind a blueberry bush...a 10 inches high bush :o) A few years ago they developed a blueberry brand that grows this high north. Billberries seem to have much stronger taste. I don't know how the wild blueberries in north America taste, though.
Do the wild blueberries dye everything blue? The ones they're selling in the market places here don't have a strong dyeing effect like billberries.

I bet your eyesight is pretty good though!  Billberries are excellent for eye health (I use them to reduce eye fatigue from staring at a computer monitor 16 hours a day).  They were also used in WWII by bomber pilots to help with night vision.

In the South East USA we have a wide variety of Blue Berries. Some grow on short ground cover type bushes and others grow on  bushes that can be 12 feet tall and big and round.

The State Agriculture departments have encouraged the development of cultivars that have profuse and tasty output. The cultivars are based on endemic stock so they not only thrive but they also volunteer pretty well.

They are all capable of making your teeth turn blue. :-)

We also have "Sparkleberries" which look very similar but taste more mealy and tart. They aren't just tart blueberries but they look real similar to a lay person.

We also have wild plums, but only one out of many trees has tasty fruit so if you know of a good tree out in the forest you are probably not telling anyone ;-).

There is a very nice deli and cafe up the road from where we live and they have these amazing blueberry and lemon tea cakes for sale. We are getting them almost every day. Here is a variation on it but I will post the recipe I am thinking of as soon as I find it.

My favorite way to eat blueberries are to freeze them. When it gets hot nothing cools me down as fast as some frozen blueberries. Om nom nom nom nom :D
