How to find/use Pitch Bend?
I'm just learning about controller events in Music Creator 6. I've figured out Modulation and Pan, however, I'm completely stumped as how to enable Pitch Bend. How do I locate the Pitch Bend controller and enable it? I'm pretty sure that once I find it, I'll know how to draw it in. Also, does this process vary between the General MIDI, Cakewalk TTS and Cakewalk SoundCenter synths? Any detailed guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

Open the Piano Roll View (PRV) of your MIDI track. Then look for a tool in the toolbar above the PRV to 'Show Controller Pane' (I think). That will show at the bottom of the PRV and you can select which event types you want to modify and draw them in using the Pencil tool.

There is a good overview of all the PRV functionality in Cake TV. The X2 Piano Roll video might answer a lot of questions.

The easiest way to get modulation and pitchwheel kinds of stuff in the midi tracks is to have a synth keyboard and "play it in" musically..... not impossible to do it manually, just easier and more precise being played in

(I've taken a break from this over the recent month. I thought I figured out the method of using the Automation Lanes to add controllers, and I somehow forgot the entire thing.) After reading this post and the links offered therein, I was able to practice adding controllers for modulation, pan and even pitch bend into the Track lanes. Now I forgot how. I can't seem to even access the drop-down menu for Clip Automation -> MIDI event or whatever. I've literally spent the past two hours clicking/right-clicking every pixel on the screen to figure out how to open the Automation editing thing on the Track lanes (where you see the node bar, etc.) but can't get it to come up. I've watched the Sonar X2 videos left and right, and still can't remember how I did this. And these videos don't truly translate well to the same process in Music Creator. Can someone please refresh my memory? To summarize, I'm trying to remember how I use the "event filter" (whatever/wherever that is) to add controllers using the "automation lane" (which I believe lies within the track lanes) and edit notes. Whatever I do, that window with the lines/nodes doesn't come up. Please assist. Thanks!

If you are using a simple instrument track, you will have to do MIDI automation in the Piano Roll View. If you have a MIDI track the automation lane has a MIDI selection that will bring up the MIDI Envelop dialog. Even with MIDI tracks, I prefer using the PRV controller pane instead of automation lanes, the link in my post above refers to adding controllers in the controller pane.

Okay -- so you're saying I have to have MIDI data present to be able to have the automatiion window (dark window with the lines/nodes?) come up? And what is a "simple instrument track"? Is the "automation lane" defined as the window in the Track lane that displays the lines/nodes screen? I'm trying to remember how I was able to create pitch bend (among other controllers) via the window that comes up to the right of the Track (instrument, buttons, etc.) that shows the lines and nodes for editing), but I can't get that to appear... I'm sorry I'm talking in circles. This window only seems to come up for certain situations and I don't remember the procedure. I've been able to literally draw the event in the MIDI data window (to the right of the Track information where the data visually appears on the grid) and the Controller pane, but I cannot bring up the Automation window anymore. Please assist -- and keep in mind, I'm still partially new to this. Thanks! :)

No, there is no requirement to have data in a track. The Track Inspector Overview now refers to simple instrument tracks as "instrument tracks", it is a combined audio and midi track rather than the traditional Cakewalk approach of separate audio and MIDI tracks for a soft synth. From the link I provided for automation lanes, here is the image of an audio track (A) with the automation lanes (b) expanded.

That helps a little. What I'm mainly trying to find out is: "How do I apply the Wheel controller via Automation lane (up beside the Track info) rather than the Controller lane (on the bottom)?" That way, I can just draw the line and not worry about how many events make up the line. I've done it this way before and forgot how. Between the TTS-1 and the SoundCenter, I'd like to know exactly how to get the Automation lane for the Wheel (pitch bend controller) to appear up there..."

You can even go back "after the fact" to a track with midi in it and record the piano pedal and pitch wheel events. I have done this once or twice. By this I mean with a keyboard that has those things on it.

I think I just noticed something. When I create a new track -- whether it be using the SoundCenter synth or the TTS-1 synth, I'm not able to create a Reverb envelope in the Track Lane. Just Pan, Volume and Velocity (from what I recall). But when I create a new track selecting "MIDI source" instead of "Simple instrument track", all these controllers are available to me via the Edit Filter drop-down menu. However, I'm not able to hear any sounds on a MIDI source track. Still trying to figure out how to draw controllers (Reverb, Pitch Bend, Modulation, Volume, Velocity, Pan, etc.) in the TRACK LANE using the desired envelope and still be able to hear the instrument on that track. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

When inserting a synth with "MIDI Source" selected in the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog, selecting one of the Audio Output options "First Synth Audio Output", "All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo" or "All Synth Audio Outputs: Mono" will setup the synth correctly with MIDI and Audio track(s). I usually also select "Synth Track Folder" so that the MIDI and audio tracks for the synth are kept together in a folder.

Got it. I tried enabling either "First Synth Audio Output" or "All Synth Audio Outputs", but it creates two tracks. I don't need two tracks, just the one I want to apply the controller to. Here's my objective: 1) I wish to create my music without a keyboard. I cannot read music or play a keyboard, so i wish to get the most out of the PRV view. 2) I wish to be able to use all controllers available for either the TTS-1 or SoundCenter synths. 3) I prefer to draw the controller envelopes in the Track pane rather than the Controller pane on the bottom. Am I missing something? I just want to be able to create a controller (reverb, pan, velocity, pitch bend, modulation, etc.) in an automation envelope (where you draw the curve/line beside the track window) to either of the Synths. I remember there is another way of doing this without selecting any other Options checkboxes... The problems I've encountered are either 1) not all controllers are available in the Edit Filter, 2) I select Wheel from the Edit Filter but the envelope window doesn't appear/nothing happens or 3) each synth offers different selections of controllers. This seems complicated, and my documentation fails to explain this fully. I'm trying hard to figure this out, just takes a little bit of patience and effort. Thanks!
