onboard sound not working with asio driver anymore??? what gives

So ya I updated my sound driver last month and installed a x2 update and since it seemed like I cannot use asio driver mode anymore it keeps showing up as not connected after I try and check the settings.

Usually the onboard chips do not support ASIO at all. ASIO4ALL is another thing, as it is not actually ASIO, but a WDM wrapper.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Yes asio4all is a better driver than the realtec drivers. For Sonar anyway.

Those 10 cents onboard sound chips usually ruin in that awful MME drvier mode. Onboard chips do not support ASIO.

asio4all can be very iffy.  When it works , it can be a godsend for those stuck with onboard audio.  When it delivers silence, it can be hell to figure out.  When I do resort to using it, one thing you may want to check for is other programs that are open.  Shut down browser since any online video or audio may come off as the sound drivers being in use.  Also check processes for any audio that may still be running in background outside of Sonar.  You may bot see it, but sometimes media players are still running even though they appear to be off.

Yep, try ASIO4ALL, WDM driver mode, or MME driver mode. Other than that, the best bet is to get an external USB audio interface. And then just use the onboard sound for Windows.

Yep Dub and Scott are correct. And when Dub says it can be a **** to figure out, he ain't joking! Dub gives great advice in the trouble shooting process.

But on note on what CJ says about onboard sound:

    He's right.

I have two boxes. On the one that has the built in Realtec sound card, I have chosen to install X2 on it, To make it work I have to use ASIO4All drivers. Otherwise X2 would not run. And here's where CJ's advice comes in: If this box was the only box I had, my first purchase would be a USB audio interface. It just ain't worth the headache. Because for some reason the drivers just go missing. And I haven't figured out why. Only a restart seems to work, sometimes! So I would not do this all the time.

Good usb audio interfaces can be had for cheap. Do yourself some good and get one.

I got the Steinberg Ur22  for only $150.  up to 192khz and worked well with Sonar pretty much out the box.
