USB stick; Scan for errors? Finds no errors? Wants to scan the next time too?
 
I've got a USB stick that I've been using to connect to 3 computers.
 
WinXP x86 DAW
Win7 Home x64 laptop
Win7 Pro x64 DAW
 
I always remove the USB after using the device dialog and waiting for the notification that it is safe to remove.
 
I am repeatedly being asked to scan for errors when I plug it in to the systems. I have also had a few .exe and .zips act wierd. Specifically they would seem to be corrupted (which I believe happened in the download, because I'd have to download another copy before I fixed the issue) and when I tried to copy a new instance on board I would get a "write protected" dialog. When that happens I have had to re format to make the problem go away.
 
The stick is formatted with Fat32 at default cluster size. It seems like I have let every machine give it a try.
 
It is a small 2GB stick.
 
The scans never find any errors... but Windows seems to want too.
 
I don't mind throwing the stick away but I suspect the issue is simpler than that and has something to do with the format and the differing OS's.
 
Any ideas?

    To scan a drive for error on a windows system open a command terminal as an administrator and run the following command: "chkdsk ??: /F/R/X". Replace ?? with the correct drive letter like c or e.

    I've just been clicking on the button in dialog that says "click here you want to scan for errors".
     
    The part that makes me curious is that it never finds any errors... and I have copied lots of files that don't seem to have any errors.

    Does anyone have any idea?
     
    I think it must have something to do with the different OS and the indexing even though I am pulling it out after doing the remove device procedure in the OS.

    You could try reformatting the drive. If that does not clear it up, it might be failing and unable to clear the bit on the drive indicating the need for a scan.

    I've done that on each system thinking maybe it would help. Its a 2GB stick and I select default cluster size.
     
    But the issue keeps showing up.

    I have found MSE very good for checking either USB sticks or drives that clients especially want to put into my computer. I run a scan on an office computer first to check. Just select the custom scan and point it directly into the USB drive. Update definitions of course before hand. I have had MSE detect and trap (quarantine) and then you can dispose of if required. Usually after doing a second scan after there are no issues.
     
    You could try backing up the data and reformatting the USB stick as well if the above does not work.

    The main reason I am pressing the point of asking is that it seems so un-ordinary.
     
    Heck, I have one stick that went through the washing machine and never missed a beat.
