My amazing son playing drums again!

Hi all. Sorry to boast but I am very proud of him. I just cannot help it! He has just enetered a drum comp and this is one of the pieces he had to do:

I have mixed it witht he drums a little loud but you had to do that for the judges to hear it properly. It is a very difficult Dave Weckl piece and it is charted out would you believe and Jacob has played it perfectly from memory! He also did Steve Gadd's 'Crazy Army' without any mistakes and some ridiculous snare piece I think written by Buddy Rich.

He is so young yet he is playing incredibly well for such a young player. (only 6 years playing drums) He practices a lot!

Wow!  I just went to listen to a little of it and easily sat through the whole thing.  Then I tracked down Weckl's version and liked your son's version better (Jacob's was more Rippington's style, Dave's was more Latin style if that makes any sense).  Enjoyed both of course!

Thanks all for the compliments. He is a lovely drummer (just like his Dad! ) LOL. I think he is reading these posts now so I had better be careful. (hey Bro!)  Well we were pretty amazed at craigb's comment. I mean to say it was better than Dave Weckl is pretty cool. Actually I did check out the Weckl version and found it different to what I expected. It sounded a bit heavier and more rocky to me. I think the drum sound has a bit to do with it too. Also craigb we are not sure what you mean by Rippington's style! Jacob sounds a bit lighter to me in many parts of it. There are many versions of this on Youtube with lots of people playing it and they all vary a lot!

Although that kit on the Jacob video is all miced, the sound is now coming mainly from the overhead mic now much more so than anything else. Something has happened to the bottom end on the video stream as well. It has way more low end here on my master mix.

I am producing a lot of songs for various people at the moment and Jacob has played on some pop and rocky material. He sounds so nice doing that. He grooves nicely against the click too which is not easy. He is very even and consistent in his playing and is easy to mix both recorded and live. He has got various styles under control which only expands your possibilities I feel.

I should have said it reminded me more of Tourist In Paradise by the Rippingtons in feel - light, airy almost Islandish if that makes any sense! LOL.  As opposed to the heavier Latin feel of Weckl's version.

craigb I loved that clip! LOL  Everything about it, the groove and everything else. Yes I see exactly what you mean. It has got a pretty similar feel for sure.
