DAW Remote HD Setup... Interested?

I use SONAR X2a on a Win 7 laptop and an iPad 4th Gen.
I am attempting to set up DAW Remote HD, a paid app on the App Store.
My laptop is connected to my first router via an Ethernet cable, while simultaneously connected to my (second) wireless router for Internet connection. My iPad is connected to the first router via WiFi.
I also downloaded a wireless MIDI driver rtpMIDI, as recommended by the creator of DAW Remote HD. The rtpMIDI becomes the MIDI device in SONAR, and the DAW Remote HD uses the Mackie Control Surface protocol to communicate with SONAR via the iPad.
Most of my setup is complete, however the control surface never finishes connecting, so my iPad cannot control SONAR yet.

Here's my goal: to allow my iPad to become a SONAR control surface wirelessly. I will use this configuration LIVE with my iPad on top of one of my keyboard controllers, or in a case attached to my keyboard stand. I will use the iPad to control track muting, volume, etc.

My reason for posting this is that I have not found any source in the Cakewalk Forum, or elsewhere on the net, that provides a guide to setting up this specific configuration. I'm receiving help from the DAW Remote HD team, but want to post a "how-to" for other SONAR users IF I get it working, and IF there is any interest among forum users. So, if you'd like me to post the "how-to" IF I get it working, please reply. Only one reply is necessary for me to consider it worth the time to create the "how-to."

    Hi Magek;

Definitely interested. I bought DAW Remote HD and set everything up on X3 as the instructions said, but I keep getting an error message that there is no MIDI signal.

Any ideas on what might be going on? Is this similar to the experience that you had?

Windows 8 tablets are pretty inexpensive these days, you might try the public beta of yMIDI. It has a complete MCU Pro control surface as well as general MIDI controllers and touch triggers. I've tested it extensively with Sonar and it works rather nicely with it.

Thanks for the yMIDI . I specifically say that it supports transport controls and enabling/disabling record on tracks, etc. Both of those are what I'm primarily concerned about (have different "stations" in my studio that I want to record from).

I'll download the trial and see if I can get it figured out. It would probably be a great use of my Surface RT :)

Thanks for trying yMIDI and let me know how it goes. The beta version is the one you want - it has the control surface. Send an email if you need some help getting it configured.

I, too, am very interested in this thread. I would prefer a "universal" iOS app so I could also use it on an iPhone, with a restricted screen, obviously.

Hmm - anybody using a controller with BandLab? Do you guys think after being sold and passed around Cakewalk is doomed?

Just check out other posts on the subject. Lots of people use controllers of various types around here. I dont, per se, but my mixer interface recorder does allow for transport controls.

You can use any controller... Including OSC based apps, even without rtpMIDI. 2013 there was no AZController

There was no changes in native controllers support during last 10 years, in fact more then that. Roland has tried with own and had no success for several reasons. All these devices had questionable price/value ratio, old Edirol interfaces which never was on top was re-packed without changes, but for extra components, which was not bad, Roland as usual has asked too much. Any device is only as good as the worse component in it, so the combination in specification and functionality was more like "low end".
I personally think Cakewalk was doomed after Sonar 8. CbB is still just Sonar 8, facelifted and inaccurately hacked at many places. All new features luck "integrity", f.e. none of them can be controlled from surfaces. On positive side, CbB has much less bugs then early X1-X2.

Unless I am mistaken, PreSonus is the only company that has a controller and software that is made exclusively to work together. (not counting Pro Tools) But it does state it will work with other DAWs. There is a section for set up in the Manual for Sonar but several control functions are limited. Because Studio One does not have the capability to mix surround sound I will probably go with both DAWs for now. If Sonar is doomed for the future it will be nice to have another DAW and PreSonus seems like a solid company but you never know.

Not just Presonus, Ableton produce the Push controller for Live. Though it’s not exactly “conventional” in approach.

Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

And Yamaha produce Nuage for Nuendo. Conventional, but not the cheapest solution

Thanks guys. This forum is a lot friendlier than most. Go on video forums. I was searching for a better audio encoder for surround sound for the windows platform. Most offer the old outdated Dolby AC3 which severely compresses your audio file when burning to a Blu-ray disk. All I did was inquire and man you thought I was asking for something evil. Haters came out everywhere, said I was over my head and my expectations were too high. But one guy found out that Cyperlink Power Director's (cheap program go figure) authoring software uses a first generation DTS encoder which is far superior to the AC3 when burning. So I guess it was worth it in the end getting all the negative comments. Thanks again guys!
