Trouble recording multiple midi tracks at once

I have always been a "one man band" so to speak recording things one at a time.  Tonight - for the first time - I had our drummer and keyboardist over here to record at the same time and couldn't get it to work.  I loaded Toontrack Superior Drummer and my electronic drum kit triggered that great.  I loaded Z3ta and the keyboard triggered that great.  The problem was the first go around, the keyboard triggered both Z3ta AND Superior Drummer and the drum kit triggered both the drums and Z3ta.  I'm using a M-Audio MidiSport 2X2 so I can have two MIDI devices running simultaneously. I had the keyboard in "MidiSport In A" and the Drums in "MidiSport In B" set to Omni channel.  If I switched them both to channel 1, It fixed the problem of triggering both sounds, but I couldn't record both at the same time.  Sonar would only show one or the other as having input.  If I had the drum track selected, I would hear that and see it recording.  If I had the keyboard track selected, I would hear that and see it recording but wouldn't hear drums anymore.  Very frustrating.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The two midi sources need to be set to two different channels.

Usually, you'd set your keyboard to channel one and the drums to channel ten. Make sure the midi track inputs channels for each are set to the correct channel for each instrument. You don't want to use omni.

    +1 on the above advice.

I think it was Roland that started the whole drums on midi channel 10 thing - but that was eons ago, and I may have some faulty memories.

Anyways, each input midi device should be set to transmit on a different channel, as noted in the earlier reply.  If you are using the external devices to trigger sounds within Sonar, such as soft-synths, then set each midi channel for each soft-synth instrument to the appropriate channel that matches the external device.

You may need to turn echo input on for each track you want to monitor while recording.

    Hope that helps,

I had set them to different channels but still couldn't hear them or see any input in the meters unless I physically clicked on the particular channel.  I am using soft-synths.  I'll try it again.  My Hart kit does use a TD-6 Roland Module.  I'll try assigning that to 10.  I had the keys at 16 and the drums at 1.  I did notice that when I clicked away from one, the input monitor would go from lit to dark.  I couldn't figure out how to force it to stay on when the channel is not selected.

Thanks for the tips!  I'll go back and try 1 for keys and 10 for drums to see what happens there.  Thanks again.

You can click on the input echo on button for all tracks you want to monitor.

    Hope that helps,
