The mass media is not here to report honest news.  They are here to sell advertising.  Real journalism no longer exists.  I don't care if its fox, msnbc, cnn, or some local network.  They are all crap.

I see things like that happening all the time back home. It's become pathetic.

So very true. It's all about ratings these days and so very little truth. I end up checking multiple sources for all my news these days. All the while making sure that I understand what angle they are coming from so that I know in advance the biases.

In an effort to cut costs many news outlets are simply repeating what they get of twitter and Facebook. If it's on the net it must be true.

Dang! Is this for real? This actually made it on some news station? I don't know if I should laugh, because it is rather funny.

The part I don't get is the story correction termed this to be a 'racist' joke. So a play on last name pronounciations is now considered racist?

Broken pencils are pointless.

Racist my as$. That's just funny. Like the credits read at the end of "Car Talk" that thank the legal team of Dewy Cheatham and Howe, or the researcher Marge Innoverra. Sum Ting Wong, indeed.

Am I a bad person for getting a belly laugh after watching that clip... what morons. Still laughing (sorry)...

@ LP: It never has existed. Pull up some newspapers from the late 1850s... or anytime really. There is nothing new. The same old crap just keeps on working and political campaigns are much more civil than they used to be. You hear about the nastiest campaign ever... not even close to how it used to be. I think politics and the media are intertwined, human nature... believing reporters and news anchors has done a LOT of harm.
This is not posted as political but rather as history.... lest we forget or think that anything has changed.

Well I did not do it, so I can laugh about it. Uptight people do not make a world that is any different than what it is nowadays anyway.

Good to see news stations checking their facts, eh?

From KTVU (in Oakland California)

That station will likely fire it's technical crew for that ... but it also tells you that a lot of things that many of these stations are carrying are just stuff they are hording off the Internet that ais disguised as "news" ... and posted immediately without any verification ... and sadly, this was wrong, and some people will likely be gone for it!

Sad that the pilots were insulted like that, irresponsibly so, for what would easily have been a mechanical failure, as much as pilot error! But all it takes is a faulty gauge somewhere!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

What's as appalling as anything in this is that the news lady was so air-headed that she didn't catch on.  I could see a news announcer starting to read the list and then stop, in horror, and apologize.  But this bimbo just sailed on through, giving her best shot at correct pronunciation.

As to the "irresponsible" part, the airline has filed a defamation lawsuit against the station.  I don't have more details than that, but, yeah, some heads are going to roll for the f-up.

Good thing it wasn't an American Airlines flight with Dick Hertz, Mike Hunt, Turner Brown and Ben Dover as the pilots...

There is a remarkable difference between the example in the OP and the example offered here.

The Car Talk example offered here is a clever use of familiar syllables and it leverages some stereotypes of professions.

The example offered in the OP is a ridicule of a stereotype of the speech patterns of a population of humans that grew up speaking another language. It isn't a joke about the airline profession, it is a broad based implication that leverages a long standing and insulting stereotype based on one culture's estimation of another culture's ability to mimic its speech patterns.

It was clever, but I doubt I'd find it funny, even if it was part of a light hearted stand up comedy sketch.

Making fun of people and how they speak seems lame.

In the context of this circumstance I personally don't see how it can be funny.

all the best,
mike
