Needed something to read. Got this: Mixing Audio: Concepts, Practices and Tools by...
Roey Izhaki So far it is very good. The most expensive e-book I have purchased but from what I have read it will be money well spent. OH, and the new copy of Tape OP has a good interview with Ken Caillat who has a new boo about his experience with Fleetwood MAc and in particular about the making of Rumors. Love it or hate it Rumors was a special moment in time and a well mixed and produced album... it did pretty well too. Sold over 40 million copies so far... Should be a good read. Older interview from SOS here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug07/articles/classictracks_0807.htm To whoever recommended Mixing Audio... thanks. I don't know if I heard it here, read it in Scott's book, or what... but thanks. Going to try his first recommendation next week (I hope). Take 20 CDs and record 20 seconds of a track from each, put them all back to back in one DAW track with fades between. Then listen to the 20 mixes. 20 secnds doesn't give your brain time to adjust to the sounds and you will hear all the different mix styles, you will like some and not like others... mark the ones you like for reference but note all the differences that normally you wouldn't notice. He seems to have a really unique view of mixing, as that of being an artist, not just a technician. Very good so far. Julien

What do you mean by "expensive"? I just got it for $8 on sale, although maybe that is expensive for an e-book. I'm getting through it quite quickly. I didn't think the section on analog mixers and such would hold my interest but I actually found it fascinating. I said this in another thread but it's the perfect compliment to Mike Senior's "Mixing Secrets." Senior's book is more of a hands on approach while Izhaki's book gets into all the technical nooks and crannies to explain "why." Did you download the audio examples yet? You can get them from his website. They're essential to following the book.

No, I need to download them. I will go and look now. I figure I am going to have to buy a few albums that I wouldn't buy otherwise but I feel like I need to get an oroginal copy of Nevermind... I need to buy 20 current tracks so I can make a track to compare the mixing. I think I want to do two, one with modern, current tracks and one with songs from over the years that I like the sound of. Thanks, I figured there would be a link in the book to download clips when I need them... Julien

Julien, Why not ask here on the forum for 20 secs of songs you don't have? I'd think there are no legal problems with sharing a 20 sec clip for this purpose.

OK... I hadn't thought of that. I have plenty of older tracks that I think are mixed very well but are out of date... but, so AM I. That is a good idea. I'll have to think about what to ask for. I guess I'll need some country, alternative, blues, dance, (I don't think metal will help me much). Thanks for the idea. J

Some of these downloads must be huge. One of the zipped files is taking a long time and the 2nd wav files took a long time. I was thinking f putting them on my iPhone since I am reading the book on Kindle, then they will be accessable through phones if I am reading outside or in the bed... but dang, they might use up all the space on my phone, lol. There is the cloud or icloud but I haven't figgered it out yet. J

Just curious: In e-book format, are the audio examples (which come on a CD with print version) immediately audible just by clicking a link/word or such?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I'm not sure. My Kindle is a Paperwhite and does not support audio. I have the Kindle APP on my phone and laptop could try it on one of those and see. I have noticed markers such as pins and arrows. I need to go back to the legend and see what each means, then I can check. Will try to do that tomorrow betweeen yardwork and cleaning out the garage... I'm sure of one thing... I will need a break! I did download the fies from the author's website earlier today, they are over 4G of files... <deleted> began to ramble... In case you didn't know (I didn't) there is a forum on the book website: http://www.mixingaudio.com/forum/ HTH and I will try and remember to try and check it out tomorrow. Julien

The audio examples no longer come on a CD, you have to download them from the author's website. The examples are not playable by clicking a link on the book. However, it's really no trouble to have the folder with the audio open on the screen next to you as you're reading. I'm using Mobipocket Reader to read the book on my desktop. I don't have a standalone Kindle - I use the iPhone app to read Kindle books, and the Amazon Cloud reader to read them at home in my browser. All of your Kindle books are in the Amazon Cloud. The trouble is, I don't seem to be able to get this e-book (.mobi filetype) to show up in the Cloud Reader in my browser. The problem is that only books that you bought on Amazon automatically show up there. So doing some research, I found out that if you email the .mobi file to your Amazon email address (you'll find it in your account somewhere), it should show up in your cloud. So I did it....and it's showing up in the Kindle app on my iPhone but not in the Cloud Reader in my desktop browser. It's so annoying. It means that if I want to read the book on my phone while I'm on the go, I have to find the page I'm at on at home, and vice versa. If I could read it in the Cloud Reader in the browser then my bookmark would be constantly in sync.

To be honest when he was giving commercial mix examples early in the book (for instance Nirvana), I was just listening to the songs in YouTube. I could totally hear everything he was saying about Smells Like Teen Spirit on YouTube, especially the part about the bouncing basketball kick drum!
