The Red Room

The Red Room

Here's a song I wrote and recorded within 3 days. It's pretty darn good at the moment if you ask me, for that time frame. What do you guys think?

Another winner David... the mix is a mess, but there is something about your songs I really like... fresh, original, and very quirky...  very cool...

Ha, the mix a mess? Any suggestions on what I can do to get everything well-placed and clean? This is pretty much my second 'alternative rock' (if you'd call it that) song, and I'm still figuring out the mixing. Much different than hip-hop. Thanks, notnat!

Well, you might start by starting over with each track and panning things out more. It sounds like every thing is on top of each other. Remember you can pan left and right 1 - 100 on each side, so there is plenty of space. Also left and right you don't want things sharing the same space. Example drum beats #1 @30 left, drum beats #2@ 35 right, cymbals #1 @ 38 left and cymbals #2 @ 40 right, and so on and so forth. Vocals @ 25 and back up vocals @ 45. The spread depends on where you want each track placed in the mix. Then you can also control the volume for each so that each track is heard clearly in the mix. So on and so forth. It is time consuming but in the end it pays off. Also, when using presets for the final mix, you really need to understand each presets settings, as each setting will alter you tracks. Then consider the amount of reverb you want, if any, echo, excitement, dynamics, equal or unequal, stereo expansion and so on. It doesn't come overnight, but stick with it, sounds like you might have the beginnings of a good song  here.

Peace and Blessings, John

Thanks, both of you! I'm in the process of a reworked mix. TGP, the way you say it, each singular PERCENT actually matters... I was riding home from somewhere earlier and was thinking- there's NO WAY every singular percent matters; just larger blocks, like 5%'s at a time, right?

From your experiences (or anyone else's!), has each singular-and-distiguishable percentage mattered in a mix?

hey dav,

did I already mention that your stuff is among those I am always looking forward to? Well,  the red room does not let me down, although it is not my favorite. The rhythm sounds a little off, especially at the beginning - but because it is coming from you, I guess this is intended? In any way, keep the good, different songs coming, I like it!

I love this song and the whimsical mood it conveys.  I agree with John's comments on panning.  This song could take a wider perspective, yet, it's well balanced to begin with so panning would be icing on the cake.  It reminds me a bit of Weezer - I hope that's good with you, I like Weezer.

All the best,
Lynn

speedtom, it puts a smile on my face to know that! I decided that It was meant to have a much more perfect rhythm, went ahead and corrected it. Super glad you like my stuff!!!

Lynn - I've ALWAYS planned to listen to Weezer, but just have not yet got around to it! Any suggestions? I'll try later tonite, for sure. In any case, thanks for taking a look! I am reworking the mix to get the panning and stuff working a bit better. Thanks again!

Now if anyone can decipher the strange message I worked into my song... kudos to you.

I would love to get kudos from you, but I am afraid I cannot decipher the message...I guess I could use the good ol' "language barrier" excuse for not finding out?
