Candy

A hair metal type tune song called Candy written by the singer in the 80’s.  My cover band recorded this in my basement during a rehearsal about 8 years ago.  The intention was to get a half-way decent recording for posterity / fun not really to get a polished mix.  We did 2 takes and I had just learned the tune.  This is the second take.  Very basic recording set-up: SM57's on the guitars, the live lead vocal through an SM58.

Before mixing this down I fixed a timing mistake at the end of the song (I played1 and everybody else played somewhere around the “and” of 4).

I took the vocal tracks from the first take and crafted a double lead vocal and added it to the second take.

I got in touch with the guitar player and he remotely recorded harmonies.

I then re-tracked the drums with my current set-up.  The drums you hear are the drums (i.e., no drummagog).  It is a single take and I didn’t “fix” anything.  There are a couple of places where I know I have to tighten up the timing … I’m not sure if I will address just those places or quantize the whole thing to my original performance (the tempo varies by about 4 bpm throughout the song).

The mix is pretty basic.  One guitar panned 90% left and the other panned 90% right until the solo and bridge section where I pan them both to the center.

There are some artifacts I cannot get rid of from the lead vocal mic.

This whole thing was a mess and I spent a fair amount of time on it.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dave, this (as you call it) "basic mix" actually sounded really good to me......the vocals, guitars, bass, drums were quite good. You've done a really good job on just having 1 or 2 takes. The lead vocals are nicely done (clear and mixed well). The only place that seemed a little bit "empty" was during the solo (I suppose the absence of rhythm guitars), but it hit really strong when the chorus/backing vocals all came back together.

    Well done!!
    I liked it. :)

Has a good live sound and feel to the mix. I would not do a thing to this other than maybe bring the bass done a tad. Sounds good.
Really cool song. I like it, other than the f word at the end.

My apologies for the f word.  I listened to the rambling at the end so many times I didn't even give it a second thought.  So, I cleaned-up the beginning and end (you have to wait about 7 seconds for the song to start).

Not quite sure what to do in the solo section.  The 2 guitars are panned left and right until the solo and then I pan them into the middle.  I think it works well for the solo guitar but the rhythm thins out (which is what you would hear live).

Also, I originally set-up it up in soundclick to stream only ... it is now set-up for free download if you so desire.
