Please help me import and export sonar X1 producer sessions between two users!!
Hi everyone, How I would import and export full audio sessions from Sonar X1 Producer between me and a client? He is new to this but I have been using it since the Sonar 8 days. How do I explain to him how to send me his sonar project so I can mix it? We are talking all audio tracks and no midi files. It's a pain for me to import each track into a new project. I would rather have the full session where I can just load it up and start to work on it. Is there a way it can be sent by email or would he had to give me a physical data cd with the session? We send music files back and forth through Skydrive if that helps. Thanks in advance, Walt

I have a friend who has X2a, like me, and what we do is simply set up a compressed folder and paste in a copy of the project at hand, then upload to a web site I own, and then download from there using FileZilla. Would that work for you? We just open and keep on trucking. Bob Bone

Are you both using Sonar? If note OMF is a file type for this purpose. If it is a sonar project, then you can save the waves as FLACs to compress or create a Cakewalk Bundle file. If you need to split it up, you can use 7ZIP which is an open source GNU code that will let you compress and segment large files. Then you can move them if you have file size limitations. Once they have all reached the destination, you can unzip them with 7 zip.

Get him to do a Save As with the "copy audio folder" or whatever it is called (do a save as on your computer and you'll see the little option box at the bottom of the save dialog). Then get him to right click the resulting file and select Save as Compressed Folder (again not sure of the wording but that's the gist of it). Then he uploads that to Skydrive, you download it, uncompress the folder and open it with Sonar. You could also just get him to save it as a bundle (.cwb) and follow the rest of the steps I outlined but those files supposedly fail sometimes. I've never had a problem with them though. Cheers.

Even though bundle file is not recommended for the only format of saving projects, in cases like this, IMO, it's by far the most fluent and easy format for project exchange. Which method is used for the actual sending of the file, I can't comment.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Just curious - why wouldn't just creating a compressed copy of the full regular Project folder work? That's what I do all the time with my friend, and we have NEVER had a single issue doing this. We both have X2a and use the default Per-Project Audio option that stores all audio clips for a project in a sub-folder within the project folder. All we do is create a new compressed folder, copy the project folder (with its audio sub-folder) to the compressed folder, then transmit to each other. Our particular method uses FTP from one of my web sites, but any such FTP process would work the same, or if the other party is local, just either burn to disc or toss onto an external USB drive. Once copied to the other computer, the receiving party would just go into the compress folder and copy the transmitted project to the Cakewalk Projects folder. Once there, the project can simply be opened in Sonar. Since this is all standard Windows stuff, it just works, which I find more comfortable than trusting the creation and use of the Cakewalk 'Bundle' process. Bob Bone

It does work. OP just needs to make sure the Copy Audio thingy is checked. My wording was just stupid because I haven't opened Sonar in weeks.

Hey - Beepster - I wasn't even referring to your post (which wasn't stupidly-worded either) - not sure I had read it when I type up my above reply. I do the copying of the original project folder and its audio sub-folder into a newly-created compressed folder outside of Sonar altogether, just using Windows Explorer. Since the audio folder is contained within the project folder, it's just a straight copy/paste operation to get it into the compressed folder. Bob Bone
