new latency issues after X2 reinstall
Hi all, I'm a little hesitant to bring this to the table - cuz it's a little mysterious. I recently did an X2 reinstall, to clean up something and import some files. Problem is now I have latency issues like crazy! I can't playback or record without getting at least 4 or 5 dropouts and am also having problems getting the drum tracks to line up with the click -- although my drummer is really good and he has great time - when ever we do a track of his - it just won't like up with the click on playback! I'm way frustrated b/c I never ever had latency issues in the past with X1 or X2 - I was able to leave my Antivirus and everything running in the Windows sys tray with no problems. Now I get dropouts and slow-downs all the time and I've even tried disable the entire sys tray and antivirus (AVG) - but it doesn't help very much. I'm using X2 with a Tascam US600 in a Win7 64bit environment. Used to be very solid, now it's flaky. Any tips or advice? thanks much, ryan

Did you do a clean reinstall removing everything from the drive and the registry that is sonar related? If not you may want to consider that if we can't get your issues corrected easily. Some details about your setup would be helpful. Perhaps you can update your signature to include the details of your computer/ram/hard drive/sound card/video etc. Are you using asio or wdm. What are the settings in preferences>driver settings? Be sure you have the playback and record timing masters set to the same thing. Verify that the default sampling rate for new projects is what you want it to be. If you are using wdm run the profiler. with either wdm or asio I have found it it best if you only have your main sound card selected under devices. Check to make sure the build in sound card is not selected in devices unless that is your only sound card. there is more that can be checked but these are a good place to start troubleshooting. Good luck

To me, this is a big one.. simply putting the disk in or restarting the installer is not necessarily sufficient. After using "add/remove programs", manually delete all folders and if you don't wish to edit the registry, do a restart then run a registry cleaner THEN reinstall. Why doesn't the uninstaller just uninstall everything? That always seems like the final insult when I am removing a program that has earned itself an uninstall.

oh yeah, I removed all folders and spent 15 minutes hacking through the Registry. (I used to be a Windows admin professionally - so I know a fair amount of the ol' tricks) I'm wondering if Buffer size doesn't have something to do with it? I never had a problem with it before - I just left close to the left side under "Fast".

I agree, and have never understood why the uninstall process couldn't be automated to look for the Registry entries and the folders and just take care of it - or at least locate them and present the user with an option to keep or remove them. Bob Bone

I agree... But an uninstaller almost always leaves lots of remnants behind (folders and registry). It sounds like the OP might be experiencing a driver related issue (for the Tascam unit). I'd check the system's DPC latency. Also, make sure the Tascam isn't connected via a USB3 port. Many USB2 audio interfaces have issues when connected via USB3. This is especially true if those USB3 ports are 3rd-party (not integrated into the Intel chipset). If the OP has a backup image file (prior to the issue), I'd recommend reloading that backup image file... and checking performance. Once the issue is resolved, I'd use True Image or similar to create an up-to-date backup image file. That's cheap insurance against this type of issue (moving into the future).

Have you tried using ASIO as a driver mode? Also, I used to use AVG, but I found that the version I was using interfered with audio processing, causing a bunch of latency issues, so I switched to Avast and have been happy ever since. But, I would suggest you try specifying ASIO for your driver mode first and see if that helps clean up the sound. You could additionally temporarily disable AVG during audio processing sessions with Sonar to see if that helps, as well. Bob Bone

If you do change to ASIO - try a sample rate of 44.1, a bit-depth of 24, and an ASIO Buffer Size of 128, and see how that works. It is also recommended that when you change your audio interface settings, that you also power down the audio interface and back on, to load it with the new settings. Also, please note that your Sample Rate in Sonar should exactly match the sample rate you have set for your audio interface. Bob Bone

Checked all my settings, sampling rates match in Sonar and at the hardware level, and shut off AVG. Still have latency issues but are slightly better. I did a low-tech fix to the drums on two projects I was having latency issues with.... I just deleted a few milliseconds off each one, and moved it over to line up with the time line and it worked fine. :) I did also notice something strange. I get more latency problems in the projects I imported from X1, than the projects I newly create in X2. I don't know if that's supposed to make any sense, but it's something I noticed. wierd

There are two sources of latency, your audio interface settings and certain plug-ins. Check your existing projects for latency inducing plug-ins and bypass them. Look for plug-ins like LP-64 EQ, LP-64 Multiband, PC Concrete Limiter, R-Mix, any other mixing/mastering plug-ins with look-ahead buffers or convolution reverbs like such as Perfect Space.

So - let me try again - please post back with which driver mode you are using. (ASIO? WDM?) Also, have you tried running DPC Latency checker - without Sonar running? This would give you an idea of whether or not there are system-induced latency issues. If present, then you may need to go through a careful examination of both hardware and software that is running, to see what is causing the issues. Latency Mon is also a good tool for this. AND, do you have these latency problems when you bypass all effects? (hitting 'E' on your computer keyboard toggles all effects off/on). If your latency goes away when the effects are bypassed, then you have one or more plugins causing your latency issues. If so, then you need to figure out which plugins are causing this to happen. Please do post back on your driver mode setting, and also review and respond on the above. Bob Bone

Sure - these are freeware tools that help determine the ability of your machine to do things like audio processing with Sonar. Here is the link to DPC Checker: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml And to Latency Monitor (Latency Mon): http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon Give the above a shot at running for several minutes (use 1 at a time), following their doc on usage. They will let you know if your system is causing the latency, either through drivers or applications running in the background, etc. By the way - your specifications for the interface DO say that the interface supports ASIO. Here is the link to the Tascam product page for it: http://www.tascam.eu/en/us-600.html If you scroll down to the specifications, you will see it supports ASIO as a protocol. I would think that you may well have the ability to specify a driver mode of ASIO for your Tascam audio interface, which will LIKELY (not guaranteed, but quite likely) give you better audio performance. If you ARE able to specify ASIO as the driver mode, choose it, then: Click ApplyOK your way back out of PreferencesExit SonarPower off/on the audio interface (may just have to disconnect USB if no power switch available)Restart Sonar and test it out Bob Bone

Did the latency and buffer settings in Sonar revert back to factory, assuming you may have tweaked them before the re-install? Silly question, maybe.

Bob, thanks for that heads-up. I downloaded DPC Latency checker and I'll run that. I'll also try running Sonar with the ASIO drivers -- I assumed that they already got installed because Tascam only lists one set of Win7 drivers I think? Also....I've noticed that I have much more latency with X1 projects that I've moved into X2 than with projects that I've newly created in X2 -- even after I have A) disabled antivirus and startups and B) after I've ran the Plugin scanner and Wave profiler. Why is that? Any tips for that?

I am having a similar problem with dropouts and latency issues. I have a quad core Windows 7 64bit machine with 16gb of ram, a Presonus Firestudio Project interface that I run at 44.1 and 128ms. I do use a lot VI's including heavy hitters like Omnisphere, Trilian, Ivory II, VSL, SSD4, but my system has enough power to handle those. Even if I set the latency to 1024 ms I still get dropouts, though not near as bad. I also use Pro Tools 11 and do not have any issues. My issues go away when I uncheck use multiprocessing engine in preferences, but I of course run out of resources for large projects and that is a bandaid, not a solution. I am curious if your latency and dropout issues disappear if you try this.

I'd hesitate a guess, and say Tascam. I had one of those US600's and only got sound for 10 minutes in 3 weeks before I got something different. I now have a Cakewalk VS100[not real low latency, but reliability is where it's at for me],and it's been the most reliable unit, after going through hundreds of dollars in USB interfaces. Sorry I'm not really helping, but if you got that Tascam to actually work before, you must know something! Jim Roseberry's help is from someone who knows all the variables. Bob
