Does Sonar have ripple editing?
Hi all, I've had SX2 for a couple of days. Is there any way to ripple edit in Sonar? What's ripple editing you may ask? Example: I have a clip on track two and want to trim the end off. With ripple editing, it is possible to automatically have all clips to the right, above and below the edit move to the left when the end is deleted by the amount deleted. At the moment, I have to zoom out, lasso all the clips, zoom in to make sure I haven't missed any and then manually move them to the left. The closest thing to ripple editing is to right click the clip Edit > Cut > Delete Hole. the problem is that only affects one track, I still need to then select everything else and move it. What a pain! Any ideas folks? All the best, Lee.

Select all tracks and the time range, then Edit > Delete Special and check Delete Hole.

Hello Brundlefly, Thank you for helping. I'm not sure what you mean by time selection. Besides, that is not ripple editing. Ripple editing automatically moves everything that lies to the right in real-time without having to muck around selecting stuff. I don't really want to be messing around selecting loads of stuff and clicking menus. I just want Sonar to do it. Another example is if I had 5 clips on the same track and selected the left most one all the other clips would move left and right with it as if they were glued together. That does not seem to be possible in SX2 unless I zoom out, select all clips, and zoom in again. Another DAW does it perfectly fine. I thought it might have been a standard thing among DAWs. I find Sonar's preferences to be rather limited and track behaviour is not conducive to workflow. Thanks again, Lee.

Well you may not want to "muck around" many others may want to. Its an option so that you can do it your way i.e move all to fill the empty space or not. Using the time line is the standard way to select a time selection. That means length. You just swipe your mouse along the time line holding down the left button.

Thanks John. Is that the same part for setting loops? When I click that any clips become unselected. Perhaps others have not had the opportunity not to muck around and are therefore used to lots of unnecessary clicking and dragging. I'm just finding the process frustrating. It would be much simpler to have a button that you could click to affect the current, all tracks or switch off. There are things I like in Sonar, but this zooming out and in just to move clips after an edit is annoying.

No, SONAR doesn't have traditional ripple editing, but you can use the Delete Hole option to simulate this behavior. Just select some audio by clicking/dragging inside a clip. Press CTRL+ALT+X to bring up the Cut dialog. Put a checkmark next to Delete Hole (you only have to do this once). Press Enter or click OK. Now it's just a matter of selecting data, pressing Ctrl+Alt+X, and pressing Enter. No need to mess with the menus. Scott -- Scott R. Hi Scott, I have been using that (thanks for the shortcut), but it only moves the edited clip, all the clips above and below do not move with it and are out of sync. Seems CW only got half way there with it and gave up.

leebut It would be much simpler to have a button that you could click to affect the current, all tracks or switch off.
Select all is Ctrl-A, none is Ctrl+Shift+A, and current is click the track number. Selecting a track number selects all the clips in the track. You can also sweep through track numbers in the track header to select some or all tracks, and if you already have a time selection established by having swept in the timeline or selected a clip, you can hold Ctrl as you sweep or click to add tracks to that selection without altering the time range. I've heard of ripple editing, but do not know all the ins and outs of how it's implemented in other DAWs. Clearly SONAR needs some extra clicks to accomplish some of what you want. The benefit is more flexibility, and I think it will seem less cumbersome once your learn all the keyboard shortcuts, modifiers and mouse gestures available. The workflow in every program is different, and you tend to come to rely on things that a program does well, and avoid things that it doesn't. SONAR's awkwardness in some areas is well known. But, likewise, I'm sure SONAR can do some things with a click or two that are much more cumbersome or impossible to do in other DAWs.

Hello Brundlefly, Thank you for that. I will try that out. I just made a short screen capture of how easy it could, should, be (DAW name removed). http://youtu.be/SKueN8wcRps I don't think anyone can argue how easy and flexible that is. I am sure I'll get used to Sonars quirks. Thanks again, Lee.
