HELP!!! Sonar 7 / Roland UM-one USB to Midi cable issue!

Hello,
I am new to this forum as I have tried for days reading/watching all the info I can on the net to fix my issue!!!!

I have recently bought the Roland UM-One Mk2 MIDI to USB cable so that I can plug my Roland RP101 digital piano into my laptop (which is running Windows 8) as I want to use my piano as a MIDI surface/controller. My DAW is Sonar 7. I hoped by having the same brand of products it would be easier to setup, hence why I went for the UM-One, but I have had nothing but problems.

I found the windows 8 drivers for the cable, downloaded them and installed. Both Windows 8 and Sonar 7 recognises there is a MIDI device connected. I have the UM-One plugged into my USB port, and the MIDI in is plugged to the MIDI out port of the RP101, and vice versa. When I put the RP101 into Local off mode (so no sound is heard through the RP101), and press the keys of the piano - the MIDI light is flashing on the UM-one, showing that it is receiving the MIDI signal.

However, on Sonar 7 - I cant get the actual DAW to recognise the MIDI signal. On setting up the MIDI devices, it is showing "Roland UM-ONE" as the input and output device, and on the controllers/surfaces menu - I setup the piano as a "Generic Cakewalk Surface".

The problem comes when I create a MIDI track, prep the track for record to see if the green bar is recognising an input when I press the keys of the piano - but there is nothing coming through!!

I can't get to the next stage and map the keys to allow me to use any of the VSTs until Sonar recognises a signal from the MIDI device!

If ANYONE knows how to fix this, I would be very grateful!! I can give specific menu settings if needed to fix :)

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you
Dan

What have you set as the input/output of the MIDI track?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

On the INPUT/OUTPUT - I have chose "UM-ONE (Omni)", the channel is set to "1" - as is the digital piano, and the output is also the UM-One.

When I click the record and echo buttons on the midi track to prep, from videos I have seen on the net - pressing the keys of my piano should show the green input signal bar activating, but it isn't.

Thanks for replying, please help if you can :)

You have SONAR 7? Or SONAR Home Studio 7?
Regardless, those programs are old enough that I don't think they had a meter in the track showing MIDI activity. None of my (old) Cakewalk DAWs have that meter.
    And welcome to the forum.

    Hello Greg,

Thank you for your kind welcome :)

I am using Sonar Home Studio 7 - is there a way I can check if Sonar is receiving a MIDI signal from my digital piano?? When I try to map keys using MIDI learn, it doesn't recognise I am pressing any keys, but the USB to MIDI signal box is recognising a MIDI signal.

That "input signal bar" most likely is the level meter. The MIDI-activity light used to be in the lower right corner in the Windows task bar.

So are you mapping keys for special purposes or are you trying record music in MIDI-form? There's no need for MIDI-learn or mapping key-by-key if you're just playing a soft synth or other VST-instrument. I have a hunch you're doing something totally different from what we think you're doing :o) ???
With the input setting of MIDI-track that you mentioned you should get MIDI on the track, just playing, no MIDI-learn.

    Hello,

Thanks for your replies. I am relatively new to MIDI, I am a pianist and want to be able to use my digital piano to open up more possibilities by using virtual instruments within Sonar. I have read so many things on setting up MIDI, I am not sure if I am doing it correctly!

I wasn't even sure if I was supposed to map keys. I have just given the driver a reinstall - Sonar recognises there is a midi connection, or else it would bring up a warning that there are no midi devices connected.

There is the option of purchasing a midi controller solely for the purpose of midi but as I am comfortable at the piano and want to use what resources I have, I researched to see if it was possible to use the RP101 as a midi surface.

There is very limited support online for this kind of scenario - it seems 99% of people use MIDI controllers! If you or anyone has any idea how I can get Sonar setup so I can use my digital piano through the MIDI to USB to control virtual instruments, I would be very grateful!!!!
