My second attempt at enjoying a ball game...

After singing the national anthem for the Mets last year, my wife sang for their farm team tonight.

Last year at the Mets game I was anxious to leave after the first inning. I should mention that the game took place in the afternoon, that we had to be there early in the morning, and that at the time, I still had lots of issues trying to cope w/ the heat.

This one was scheduled for 7 pm and everything was just much more relaxed. And I got used to the sun and the heat. We left after the 4th inning because my wife was tired and she has to be up early tomorrow, but I actually enjoyed my time there - I could have watched the whole thing. Plus, we were really beating the other team. :P

My only regret, actually a faux pas... My wife had asked me to take a few pictures while she was singing and I was so focused on that that I completely omitted to take off the cap they'd given me (plus, I never wear hats so I don't have the reflexes) and I suddenly realized that everyone in there was standing up for the anthem while I wasn't paying attention to anything but what I was doing, so I was just walking around trying to find a good angle...

Not what you'd call a brilliant start for someone who's hoping to move here permanently.

Anyway... Go 51s!

One thing I am so not trying is the food from the concessions. A short beer is an acceptable minor offense, but the food they serve there, man... I probably wouldn't be able to hit the gym for a week after that. It almost makes Applebee's look like macrobiotic diet.

I'm kinda hoping I'll get to see a football game, someday. I really think I was starting to get it last time I saw a game on TV.

Still, as little as I feel connected to my own country, I'm guessing that people will always be able to tell tell that I once was a Canadian because hockey is in my veins.

But even Sir Gilmour rooted for Les Canadiens....

Hey, Rain, you may be missing out on one of the greatest joys of live sports: Messing with the Fans.  While some danger seekers will proudly wear the opposing team's logos and colours, there are more subtle and less risky ways to enjoy the game.
  • Inquiring Mind - Loudly ask ridiculous questions about the game, the players, the contents of the hot dogs, the morality of competitive sports, or the psychological implications of the team's mascot.  Other fans get so excited when you continually badger them with clueless inane questions!
  • Improper Cheering - Confuse your sports metaphors.  Scream random nonsensical cheers that have no relevance to the current sport.  At the top of your voice, cheer for teams who aren't playing.  Boo the officials when nothing is happening.  Cheer for yourself as you progress along the line towards the restroom.
  • Big Stuff - Buy every giant hat, foam finger, vuvuzela, life-size replica, jersey, and or plush toy you can get your hands on.  Pile them all around your seat and ask people nearby to hold them for you.  They love that.
  • Helpful Announcements - Stand on your chair, scream out a common make and model of vehicle, and declare that the owner left their lights on.  There's a chance you could be right.  After doing this two or three times, announce instead that you're doing fine without your medication.  You might also try standing on your seat, pointing at a nearby individual, and offering your free assessment of his psychological shortcomings.  Not everyone can afford to visit Dr. Phil, you know.
  • Excuse Me - Sit somewhere in the middle of a row.  Get up frequently during the game and go to the concession stand, restroom, or anywhere else.  Every time you force people to stand to let you in and out, you give them the chance to practice their manners.  You can expect to be thanked.
  • Accident Prone - Okay, this one carries a certain degree of risk.  It is sometimes combined with the previous item.  While attempting to balance your nachos, chili dogs, and 96oz beverage, accidentally drop/spill/toss the contents on neighboring fans.  Even the most mellow fans tend to react to this one!  You know, they love contact sports so much, they'll probably really enjoy your contribution.
You're welcome.

I can watch most sports though basketball really does not interest me except in the playoffs and rarey then. I like the NFL best. If you go to an NFL game be sure to get lower level seats. Club level is full of people who go to be seen by others, the top level is full of loud mouthed drunk people, the lower level is where the crazy full bore fans are. Basebal is OK but goes too slow for me and you always have to keep your eye on them or they will sling a bat at you or hit a ball your way...

I never watched a basketball game but I used to play and I loved it - almost as much as I loved hockey. (Come to think of it - both sports were invented by Canadians. So I guess the Canadian blood is speaking again...)

I played baseball too and liked it. As a matter of fact, most sports were fun to play, but just not as much fun to watch. That's one place where hockey really shined. It was so much fun to watch. Back in the days, anyway.

I never tried football, though.

Hockey's always been my game of choice as well Rain.  I grew up in Northern Minnesota, about as close to Canada as one could get, with out being Canadian.  A trip to the MN State Tournament was routine for my high school back in the late 70's early 80's.  They did quite well, winning several times and throw in a few Consolations here and there.  One of my class mates currently is the head coach of the UM Gophers; his dad was my football coach as a kid.

A few years back, a funny thing happened to me.  My sons high school ice hockey team needed help coaching, so I volunteered to get certified and help out as an assistant coach.  Little did I know that the head coach would decide to quit a couple of games into the season.  Somehow, I ended up coaching our Mesquite Ice Hockey team.  Talk about deer in the headlights.  I did alright.  It sure was an eye opener.  I learned alot about life in those 2 seasons.  Here is an old link to the team blog spot.
