What pays more?
Hello at all, i got the option to buy sonar X1 producer ( ?,-€ ) or sonar X2 studio ( 75,-€ ). What is the better choice? What is a fair price for X1 producer? What i like in the X1 version is the pro channel. Where are the difference between the X1 producer and X2 producer version? Best regards, Tomas

Gotta agree with Mike on this one - if the X1 copy is legit and therefore can be registered with CW, get that and upgrade to X2 Producer. That way you have the latest version and Pro Channel - along with the other Producer goodies - and you're on a good upgrade path for whatever comes next.

To clarify (though you may very well be aware of this): Since SONAR lisences are non-transferrable, and X1 has not been available for about a year, most of the X1:s that change owner at the moment do it illegally, you can't register them, get support or special upgrade prices. But if you'll get a legit one, go for it.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Kinda hard to tell the legite copies from the bastard ones, I would guess. But if it hasn't been registered any X1 should be good to go. For the OP - SONAR has no copy protection built in - Cakewalk keeps track of legitimate copies by having you register your serial #. If the serial # isn't already registered, they give you a number that unlocks the software past the 30 day demo period. As to the version of X2 to buy - there is a comparision chart between the different versions. Look at that and see if it is worth it to you. The ProChan consists of high-quality effects which can save money w/ 3rd party plugins. And is easy to use and see at a glance for most track effects since it is part of the inspector. For most of my projects I use it almost exclusively (although I have many of the "extra" PC modules - Soft Tube, the optical comp, etc.). @

Prices for legit full versions X2 Studio $99 X2 Producer $399 You may see some discount from vendors... but I wouldn't expect much (given the recent lower cost). If you see a price obviously below cost... you can be sure it's not legit. (To clarify, I'm talking about X2) If you want the Pro Channel, you'll need the Producer version.

You should never get a program that is not the latest, as it is no longer supported and will never get updated again. Get the latest program. Its a stupid move to get the older Sonar in my opinion. CJ

It's definitely possible there are discounted versions of X1 at retail. If you find one, I do recommend you upgrade to X2 Producer as you get many more features. Good luck! Hope you become a user soon.

I'm talking about X2. When you see copies for X2 Producer "OEM" for $30... well...

I blame it on Mike's glasses. BTW, in most case it would 12, 12, 123 for me.

Hello, thanks for your replays. Now i think i wil buy the X2 studio version because the other version is registered and that means what you've wrote, no support and no option for updates. Sorry for my bad englisch but on this point i want to say something. Many years ago i had worked with other sequencers ( Qbase, Logic, ... ) and never was realy happy with them. A few month ago i had become a LE version of sonar with the A300PRO midikeyboard and and you know what ( i think you know it )? In short, the products of cakewalk and the company presence are very clearly, logical and user-friendly build on. The community here is very helpfull and friendly too. unfortunately, nowadays this is not normal. The information about audio mixing and more on the internetsite are very very helpfull. I daresay many more positve about this forum and the company. Thank you to bringing me back to have interrest in making music. Thanks and best regards, Tomas

Good choice! Registering a legit copy is definitely the way to go if you're planning to stick with SONAR, and from the sound of it, you are. That's also a good choice! With Studio you still have the same core program with all of the workflow enhancements. Plus, you can always upgrade to X2 Producer or the next version whenever it's ready.

Tomas, you won't just not have support, an already registered SONAR will stop working after 30 days w/o the reg number. Even w/ the reg number it might not work. I'm the same as you. I looked at the different DAWs (I was coming from tape/mixer and Sonic Foundry's Vegas audio/video program and Cakewalk seemed the easiest. Other people find Cubase, or Logic, to be the best fit for them. Everyone is different, but I liked Cakewalk and have stuck w/ it over the years and haven't been sorry. @

Sonar X1 is still supported by Cakewalk: https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/contact/default.aspx#ts-policies Is it better to get the new version of a Sonar product with all the new bugs that have not yet been fixed, or an old version of Sonar with all of the fixes that will ever be offered for the old bugs? In my experience no version of Sonar has ever been retired with all of its bugs fixed, and no new version is ever likely to have all its bugs fixed before it is retired. If you can get an older version for a substantially reduced price, and that version has all of the features you need, there is little benefit in getting the newest version.

My first copy of Cakewalk was a handoff from a guy who had tons of gear and got a copy with some piece of hardware and he didn't want it. I sure am glad he handed it to me.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

A genuine copy of X1 Producer,i.e not already registered, would be a great starting point,as I started with a boxed new version of X1 Studio, and was always wishing I got Producer, which I eventually did,but I ended up spending $199,on a box of X1 Studio that just lays around[?]. Having said that though,X2 Studio maybe better than the X1 was,it's mainly the Pro Channel, and to be honest, now that I have plugin versions of Channel strips[waves studio classics] Studio would be fine. I think I may be able to relate to your[OP] dilemma of not being in the US,where there are amazing discount stores still with copies of unopened X1 Producer[Guitar Center etc],as in Australia a new boxed copy of X2 Producer can be as much as $6/700!! so maybe Studio, and upgrade ONLINE is the way to go.
