(Solved)Cannot select 24 bit depth with Scarlett interface

Hi (again)

More trouble it seems! Trying to set my preferences as 48,000 sample rate and 24 bit depth but apparently it's not compatible with my sound card.

My system does not have a built in card, I purely use my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. I have the X2a patch and have updated my drivers for the interface. When I go into preference and amend to 48 sample rate and 24 bit depth I get the following message:

"The default audio format id not compatible with one or more sound cards. It has been reset to 44100 Hz (16 bit), as suggested by the driver"

If I move the sample rate up to 48,000 it is fine on it's own. Whenever I move bit depth up to 24 with the sample or (or on it's own), I get that message.

Driver mode in settings is 'WDM/KS'. When I switch over to ASIO it defaults to 24 bit and I cannot change this. But when I open/start a project, in the control bar at the top it still displays 16 bit.

Any ideas please?

I'd prefer to stick with ASIO (from what I read, that's the recommended), with that, should it display 24 in control bar or 16?

Many thanks

Use ASIO. Set the project bit depth with "Record Bit Depth" in Preferences > File > Audio Data

CPSC1985 - scook has it right. Use ASIO and change your settings as he has indicated. It's easy to think you have an issue with the settings when you're in the audio preferences area and select 24 bit and it still stays at 16. The change needs to occur in the project bit depth section as he has indicated.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Use ASIO. Set the project bit depth with "Record Bit Depth" in Preferences > File > Audio Data

Exactly...
And this is consistent with all audio interfaces.
When using ASIO, it'll default to 24Bit resolution (unless the unit is limited to 16Bit resolution).
The audio file resolution is a separate preference setting (listed above).
ie:  You can set the audio file resolution to 24Bit, 32Bit Float, or even 64Bit Float (overkill for most circumstances).
The final (mixed) output to your audio interface would be 24Bit resolution.

Thanks once again guys! All sorted! I set up the DAW originally about a year ago, wiped it over last weekend and forgot to take all templates and settings. My brain seems to have forgotten everything I did last year!!

Thanks again though!
