Voice isolation from audio file question?

I have X2 producer and have an audio file recorded (with sub-par to decent quality) from an interview/collaborative discussion on undergrad. cancer research I'm working on and I'm trying to isolate the grad. student's voice I spoke with to clarify details of the chemistry of what's being done. I used a relatively crappy voice recorder in my pocket, (sansa zipclip +) and there's a hum, some buzz, and she spoke softly with an accent. I tried using audacity, getting a noise profile, removing noise, then amplify but it seemed to make things worse. I wondered if there was a way on x2 producer to (really) isolate the voice. In its current form, if you strain you can just barely make out bits and pieces of what she's saying, but if I could remove the hum, some background noise, but especially amplify this person's voice it would be enormously helpful.

    Maybe R-Mix will help clean up the track.

    A Gate effect could be tried. Gates can clear away ambient background noise and hums very nicely.

    Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

    AFAIK, if the hum is really so loud it interferes with the actual voice, it's a very difficult task that requires a very specific software. In my experience gates and EQ only help to a certain level. If the dynamics of the hum and background noice are close to that of the voice, it's surely a difficult task, even if you can build a decent noise profile.

    Hi,

    iZotope RX2 is probably the best tool I know to clean up things - but that is outside X1 and probably way over your budget (unless you can justify the cost for issues down the road). It is an amazing tool and the next version R3 will be released next month.
