Waves minor version changes invalidates previous Sonar .cwp projects' Waves plug-ins

After updating Waves to 9.2r13 from a previous minor revision, Sonar no longer finds the same Waves plug-ins, and I'm left with days and days of retro-fitting all of my previous Sonar .cwp files with updated Waves plug-ins and re-fitting the individually saved Waves plug-ins settings. Why does Sonar hold the previous minor revision signature version hostage like this? Is there a procedure for preventing this?

I've reset all plug-ins, re-installed X2(a), and re-scanned. The projects are looking fro the previous minor release of the WavesShell. I can't stress enough how big of an issue this is for me. This has been going on since at least X1 and Waves 9.0. The only fix I found was to re-install the older release version, re-scan/reset all plug-ins, manually save each and every Waves plug-in settings for each project in my Sonar history, uninstall the old version of Waves, install the new, re-scan, replace each Waves plug-in in each Sonar .cwp. then, manually and individually re-import the previously saved settings for each Waves plug-in.

If Cakewalk and Waves work closely together, why hasn't this colossal oversight been worked out yet?

Wow that really sucks beyond words. I've been suffering ongoing problems on and off with Waves plugins losing their settings even without any version changes. Not to mention the GUI problems. I like to think that a major DAW manufacturer like Cakewalk would be working together with a major VST manufacturer like Waves in order to make sure the two play nicely, however given how long these problems have existed I don't hold out much hope.

I know this is more related to the WaveShell.dll version than the individual plug-ins, but it's still a problem. After reverting back to the (Glad I saved the previous full Waves offline installer (version 9r7)), but right now, until there's a fix for this, I'm going to be held to WaveShell.dll.9r7 forever unless I'm willing to manually update every previous and current .cwp project. Someone completely missed the boat on that one (either Waves, Cakewalk, or both). And this was such an easy problem to discover. Was this not tested and considered for X2? I even reported it as a problem in X1 before.

Right now, Waves IR-1 is crashing Sonar every time I save and close a project with any changes, if that project includes Waves IR-1.

That's Waves' doing, not Cakewalk's. Plugins are identified internally not by version numbers but by unique identifiers called class IDs, abbreviated CLSIDs. The developer decides if a new version of a DLL will inherit its predecessor's CSLID or get a new one. If it gets a new one, then SONAR has no choice but to consider it as a brand-new object just as if you'd added some unrelated plugin. There are legitimate reasons for giving a new version a new CLSID, but sometimes it's just an oversight/mistake on the part of the programmer.

bitflipper, thanks, and I agree that this is really a Waves issue, but if Cakewalk and Waves claim to work very closely to try and resolve the crashes, and GUI glitches between the two, this was apparently overlooked and self-defeating for both. If Waves believes these should have different CLSID's to fix some issues with Waves plug-ins crashing Sonar, then certainly Cakewalk would allow me some way to "re-select" a plug-in and retain the settings as before than to simply lose the plug-in. This is something they both need to fix.

I opened a ticket online with Cakewalk Saturday morning, but didn't hear back yet. They're probably busy with the Labor Day catching up. I'm genuinely questioning what the best procedure is to update Waves plug-ins in Sonar without a lot of trouble. Surely someone has run into this and found a good way? Thanks!

There isn't a whole lot Cakewalk could do about this. The Plugin Manager doesn't know it's an update to a previous plugin, and even if it did it wouldn't know if the new version is even compatible with the old one. It would be impractical for Cakewalk to keep track of all the third-party plugins, their successive revisions, and backward compatibility issues that even their own developers might not be aware of.

You may already know my feelings about Waves, but I'll say it again anyway: they don't care about you, and they are not the only solution out there. Save yourself the aggravation and forget Waves.

One would think that waves would maintain backwards compatibility as far as CLSIDS - you really need a good reason to drop previous interfaces - who knows? Most simply keep the existing ones, and create a new ones for new features and updates. This way, old stuff continues to work as before while new features are there for those who want them.

Anyway, I really don't like the idea of a master VST shell hosting some pseudo-vst plugins - it's just more stuff to go boom-boom and doesn't add value.

Re: Waves minor version changes invalidates previous Sonar .cwp projects' Waves plug-ins 2013/09/04 09:45:11 (permalink)
With all due respect, Waves has the plug-ins I like, and use often. I know they're not the only game in town, but I'm prefer to be more pragmatic after an investment. Do I discontinue use of thousands invested in a plug-in chain of effects? It seems the best advice would be to get a definitive answer or maybe a few recommendations as to how to work around such an issue, vs. just dump them.

I've had my experience with Waves' cold nature, but they've improved quite a bit since 2 years ago. In fact, they helped me out with a licensing/discovery issue on a Sunday, and the tech-support agent knew exactly how to make the right things happen in Sonar to see the IR-1. That was way more handy than the support I've not had from EastWest for Quantum Spaces, who have yet to get back with me.

I've got some incredible non-Waves plug-ins that I also paid quite a bit of money for. They have yet to welcome 64-Bit DAWs without bridging (which I personally refuse to do, as bit-bridging seems to cripple the DAW for those plug-ins, IMO).

Does anyone know a better way to work around such an issue?

Something to add here. I don't have this problem with Wavelab 7. Does that bring this issue back a little closer to Cakewalk? FWIW, I did also submit a ticket to Waves about this.

I apologize, Brian. As soon as I wrote that post I had second thoughts about it. What if he's bought one of the expensive kitchen-sink bundles, I thought. And although I do feel a duty to warn others, your post should be warning enough. So as Deckert said to Rachel, "forget it, bad joke"...I'm sure Waves support will fix you right up.

Yep! That was/is basically my work-around. :-( However, my old DAW is still around so I do not need to uninstall/reinstall ...

Waves did respond, and says there shouldn't be an issue, so I'm hoping maybe they know some hack I don't. heh.

Thanks, bitflipper. I know you aren't the apathetic type.

No response yet from Cakewalk Support, tho. Could be they're talking about it internally before responding. Unfortunately, I can't call in during the day, when they're most likely able to help.

Cakewalk Support hasn't responded yet to my email support request from Friday, but Waves said they'll work with me. They claim it should not have this issue, but I've not had one update that went without this problem. Perhaps they have the correct procedure/fix/workaround for this. I'll report back here what we find.

This was the response I received from Cakewalk support:

"SONAR is looking for your previously saved instances of the plugins with a specific plugin ID value. If installing the update from Waves forces SONAR to see your plugins as new ones, then unfortunately there is no way to have it automatically switch them over in your project."

Has nobody else called this issue in before me? I'm still planning to work with Waves on this, who claim there should be no issue.

This seems to have been fixed in X3c. Although I still recommend "hiding" 32-bit versions of the plug-ins, and not to mix VST2/VST3 versions in the same FX Chain or bin, but otherwise, I've not experienced the problems in X3c. For those waiting on DMG to fix theirs from crashing the VST SCanner. This should be fixed as of v1.22 of EQuality.

Still having issues with X3c where I keep getting the CLSID missmatch. I called Waves Tech Support today and here is how we fixed my issues.

X3 32bit...
  1. Create a new folder in Program Files x86 called, Waves VST2.
  2. Move, WaveShell-VST 9.2.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins to the new folder Waves VST2.
  3. Add a new path for new folder "Waves VST2" to the X3 Plug-In Manager.
  4. You will now only see Waves Plug-ins in VST3 Plugin Category in the Plug-IN Manager and none in VST Audio Effects.

I no longer get the CLSID error. We did this with 32bit and 64bit X3.

I hope the above helps me!!
I just bought Waves plugs and am having the issue with VST2/3 I think.  I am also getting told my licenses are not there and see the rescan popup.

Funny thing is, when I installed the plugins (I have uninstalled/reinstalled twice) they work when I first launch X3c.  When I close it and re-open none of the Waves plugs work.

Meno, it seems Waves may have misguided you. VST2 doesn't mean 32-bit, because you can have VST2 64-Bit plug-ins, I believe. Anyway, here is a procedure I posted that should take care of 99% of your Waves woes (it still won't renew your WUP, unfortunately, but hey...)

http://forum.cakewalk.com...Try-this-m2944841.aspx

This procedure starts fresh. Sonar's Plug-In Manager should be able to correctly separate VST2 from VST3, making that much easier. Or, you can simply "hide" VST2 plug-ins in Edit Preferences=>File=>VST Settings.

I wonder if they have an explanation of why this happens on some systems and not on others. I can't remember ever having any of these issues. Just the don't mix VST2/3 thing. I have my license on a USB stick, don't know if that makes any difference.

This procedure starts fresh. Sonar's Plug-In Manager should be able to correctly separate VST2 from VST3, making that much easier. Or, you can simply "hide" VST2 plug-ins in Edit Preferences=>File=>VST Settings.

I don't think I said anything about VST2 being 32bit only. All I did was describe how to correct for 32bit Version of X3. I use both Sonar 32bit and 64bit. I did follow the directions that X3 gives on how to hide/replace but this did not work and I kept getting the Waves CLSID errors.

Waves did good by me. The latest versions of my Waves plug-ins are all VST3. The conflict is having both versions showing in Sonar plug-in manager. I had VST2 plugs showing in Sonar's "VST Audio Effect Category" and the "VST3 Audio Effects Category". Having both is what was causing the issue. So the work around removes all of the VST2 plugins and keeps all the VST3 in the Plug-IN Manager.

I was going to take a look at your advice "procedure" but I can't get that link to work.

To fix my issue with Waves on a fresh install was to move the WaveShell 32-bit and 64-bit versions to different folders and make sure Sonar 32-bit only saw the 32-bit version of WaveShell.
This seemed to fix the issue in both X1 and X3 that I use often.

I've seen issues with 64-Bit Sonar, but never with 32-bit. So that's interesting you ran into the case of the CLSID errors there.

Meno, I just wanted to point that out since Waves may have told you to create "VST2" folders, instead of "32-bit" folders in Program Files(x86), which is the 32-bit Program Files folder, and your header for these steps said, X3 32-bit.. just wanted to make sure you and others who read your instructions knew those weren't hand-in-hand the same (VST2 and 32-bit). I'm sure you knew that, Waves should have known that, but possibly other may not. Sorry for not assuming you knew that.   And yes, Waves support helped me work this out early on as well, even at 9PM at night on a call-back! WUP costs money, but IMO it can be worth it in a pinch.

So, there were three separate issues overall that caused problems for me with Waves plug-ins:
1) Mixing 32-bit and 64-Bit plug-ins in Sonar X1/X2. Crashes (maybe fixed in X3). The procedure I have fixes this in particular.
2) Mixing VST2 and VST3 in X3. GUI Glitches and possible crashes (avoid mixing these Waves plugins).
3) CLSID issues from sub-versions (i.e. 9r7 to 9r13, etc.) in Waves plug-ins (seems to be fixed in X3).

Hope this helps!!

Brian
