crashes/real-time fx/latency

Latency is the delay introduced by your computer processing audio.  As BitFlipper put it once, nothing ever happens "right now"...there's always a sliver of a delay.  The goal is to minimize it to the point of not really noticing.  If you're running 64 bit Sonar it's best to use 64 bit plug ins (fx).  I've experienced hiccups running 32 bit plugs on 64 bit Sonar.

Hi - I am getting a lot of crashes & use a lot of real time fx - all audio, no midi. I never really understood latency...is it just about midi? Anyway I just raised the mixing latency buffer...any other changes you wd suggest for better performance? thanks!!

To avoid confusion, separate the ideas of latency and stability.
 
Latency on a host based DAW comes from two sources:

• The audio interface
• Any latent plugins

If you have a latent plugin inserted *anywhere* in the project, Sonar's automatic plugin delay compensation delays ALL other tracks by an equal amount (to maintain sample-accurate sync).
 
As for stability, I'd rule out the system hardware first (test RAM and hardware)... then move on to config related issues.
