I finally got around to recording a demo video of the MI Effects Super Crunch Box
Hi guys, I've finally got around to recording a track with the MI Effects Super Crunch Box. The track is called "Everything Goes" and was written by Dave Sharp. I thought that the best way to demo the pedal was to actually record and produce a track where the Super Crunch Box is used exclusively for all the drive on the guitar. The guitar is a Tokai Loverock LS85 and was fitted with Di Marzio pickups. It has a Tone Zone in the neck position and a Super Distortion in the bridge. A lot of pedals don't like such a high output signal fed into them and they turn to mush. I can safely say that the SCB loved it. The tone still has a lot of definition and articulation. The setting on the pedal is: Comp Switch - 1 Hi/Lo Switch set to "high" The gain was set to about 11'o clock and the tone was in the middle. The amp was miced with SM57s and was set as clean as possible so that the only gain you'll hear is from the pedal. It was a Marshall TSL602 with an extension cabinet. The Hammond C3 was played through a 222 Leslie cabinet and miced with two mics on the horn. The song was produced in Sonar X2 and mastered in Adobe Audition. We tried to get as many camera angles as possible in the studio for this recording. Please watch the video at 480 quality. Cheers, Peter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSXU1B61N-Q

Super. A nice sparkle on the guitar part and a great chunka chunka on the turn arounds. Drums seemed a tad loud but the playing was just right for the song. I really enjoyed the bass player playing bass. The parts and tone was great. The keyboard work was a real treat... all the different tones were so nice. I love it when keyboardists play keyboard sounds. The very simple guitar melody that is dominating as the main motif would have bored me... (Satch and Eric put me to sleep) but the other instrumentation kept it moving along very nicely. Thanks for sharing. best regards, mike

Thanks for the comments, Mike and guitartrek, @ Mike, yes, it's wonderful having a keyboard player that still has most of the old analogue rigs. It's quite something to hear a Hammond C3 and a Leslie in the flesh. He doesn't do live gigs with it anymore but still swears by it in the studio. Cheers, Peter.

Makes me want to go buy that box, lol. The tone was fantabulous. The video is well done. The playing leaves nothing to nit over. I noticed you used a Shimmel grand in the video. That's what I play every week. A nice piano.

Thanks for the comments, Starise. That Shimmer is a great sounding piano. I had never heard of it before we shot the video but the sound was amazing. Cheers, Peter.

Pro performances, superb production (both audio and video), and awesome guitar tone. And that's a killer track too. Thoroughly enjoyable, and shows off the pedal nicely!

Thanks so much, Walt. I cannot say enough about this pedal. It's the closest thing to an overdriven amp that I've come across. The original Crunchbox was great but the new one just has so much more to offer. It's like two overdrive pedals in one box. Cheers, Peter.

Really nice sound. How would it sound direct in to the interface for recording or does it need an amp. Remember, I'm a bass player so if that's a dumb question, it was the bass player who asked it. I do play guitar and just never get the sound I want.

Thanks so much guys. It's really appreciated. @evadianepug - The Super Crunchbox was designed to be played into an amp. If you plugged it into the interface is would be really "buzzy". I have had a degree of success buy plugging the Crunchbox into a Hughes and Kettner Redbox and then into the interface. The tone wasn't bad at all. I did a little demo with this setup and you can hear it here. This was recorded with the Les Paul into the Crunchbox then into the Redbox and then into the desk. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=7813867 @ Rimshot - Thanks and I will tell the other guys. Yes, it's starting to look like the use of microphones is starting to disappear. It's become a "virtual" environment. I still love to use "acoustic" spaces and rooms for recording. Obviously there are viable uses for digital modelling etc but there is definitely something "organic" about putting mics in front of instruments to get the sound. @ Bob - thanks for your comments. It's much appreciated. Cheers, Peter.

It is a really nice sound. I have a "Radial jdi passive direct box". Is that anything like the redbox? Thanks for posting that link. I think it is a great sound and the playing is top notch! Thanks, Peter.

I'm not sure of the "Radial". Don't know much about them. The Redbox has a speaker sim in it which isn't too bad. This allows you to run pedals into it and take a direct feed to your interface. As you heard, it's not too bad and is a relatively inexpensive option. Cheers.
